The Anaheim Ducks are bracing for another extended period without their talented center, Trevor Zegras. The team announced that Zegras is dealing with a broken ankle and is expected to undergo surgery that will keep him off ice between six and eight weeks.

Zegras got hurt early in the first period of a 5-3 win against the Nashville Predators. Ducks’ rookie defenseman Pavel Mintyukov suffered a separated shoulder in the same game and will also miss significant time.

Zegras had a breakthrough season in 2022-23, scoring 23 goals and adding 42 assists for career-high 65 points. He was also featured on the cover of the popular hockey video game NHL 23 alongside PWHL star Sarah Nurse.

However, the new campaign has been challenging for Zegras so far. After playing in the first 12 games in 2023-24, the 22-year-old player suffered a lower-body injury in early November that kept him out for more than a month. He was just starting to find his groove back, scoring two goals against the Detroit Red Wings, before getting hurt again.

Zegras played a total of 20 games this season, contributing with seven points. The Ducks are currently at No. 7 in the Pacific division with a 14-26-1 record.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Monday that they are trading forward Cutter Gauthier, considered the team’s top prospect, to the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks will send defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a second-rounder in 2025 to the Flyers in exchange for Gauthier.

Speaking with the reporters on Monday, Flyers’ general manager Danny Briere said that he made the trade because Gauthier didn’t want to play for the franchise.

“He told us he didn’t want to be a Flyer and didn’t want to play for the Flyers,” Briere said. “So, in our mind, at first, we have to protect him. If he changes his mind again, and it’s out there that he doesn’t want to play, it’s going to be tough for him to put the uniform on.”

The Philadelphia Flyers drafted Gauthier with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft and were expecting him to join the franchise after he finishes his time at Boston College. However, the 19-year-old player apparently stopped communicating with the team, with his representatives ignoring calls from Briere.

Gauthier recently helped the U.S. win a gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, scoring two goals and adding 10 assists. His 12 points were tied for most in the tournament.

According to Briere, Gauthier’s good outing was part of why the team pulled the trigger on the trade.

“At some point, we had to make a decision and we thought with what happened a few days ago, that this was our time to get the highest value,” Briere said.

Jamie Drysdale is currently in his third season as a pro. The former sixth overall pick in 2020 has played 123 games in the NHL, contributing with eight goals and 45 points overall.

The Anaheim Ducks are expected to be without rookie Leo Carlsson for up to six weeks due to a sprained right knee ligament. The 19-year-old player was injured during the Ducks’ 0-3 shutout loss to the Calgary Flames, with the team revealing Carlsson’s injury ahead of the 3-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night.

Carlsson was injured after Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar fell on the forward’s side. “Weegar there was lunging, and then Leo lost his balance,” Anaheim coach Greg Cronin remarked after the Flames game. “You could see when Weegar fell on him, any sport when that happens, it’s not good.”

Despite coming across as a severe injury, Carlsson will not be required to undergo surgery. This injury comes at an inopportune time for Carlsson, with the rookie forward contributing eight goals and seven assists in 23 games so far this season. The Ducks will be looking to overturn a two-game losing streak when they take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night.

The Anaheim Ducks have signed 29-year-old center Ryan Strome to a five-year contract. This comes after Strome enjoyed a breakout season with the New York Rangers, where he shone as a critical member of the Rangers’ power play lineup, particularly during the postseason.

Strome did his best to represent the Rangers on the ice despite being injured and constantly exhibited his distribution and finishing abilities, thereby drawing heaps of praise from head coach Gerard Gallant. With Strome in their ranks, the Rangers won two series before being eliminated from the Eastern Conference Finals by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

During his 74 regular season games, the 29-year-old managed to score on 21 occasions, a career-high, while racking up 54 points overall. On average, Strome managed 18:19 minutes of game time per match, scoring five power-play goals in the process.

A first-round pick for the New York Islanders during the 2011 NHL Draft, last season was the first time that Strome has been able to score 20 goals or more in a single campaign.

The Anaheim Ducks have a new all-time leader in points. Veteran center Ryan Getzlaf contributed an assist in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday to take his total to 989 career points (279 goals and 710 assists) in a Ducks jersey and break the tie with previous leader and Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne.

Getzlaf’s record-breaking point came early in the third period when he set up Troy Terry’s goal that gave Anaheim a 3-2 lead.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Getzlaf said he was happy to get the record-breaking point in front of the home crowd.

“I can’t tell you how much that means to me to be able to be in front of our fans, our ownership, my family, to be here in our building to accomplish that,” Getzlaf said via NHL.com. “That was a great thing for me.”

Getzlaf, who has 10 assists and 20 hits so far in the 2021-22 season, also revealed that the opportunity to become the franchise’s all-time points leader played a significant part in his decision to sign a one-year with the Ducks this past summer.

“It is something that I definitely wanted to accomplish,” Getzlaf added. “(It will) give me a better sense of clarity going into retirement.”

Ryan Getzlaf played a total of 1,111 games for the Anaheim Ducks since making his debut for the franchise during the 2005-06 season. He made the All-Star team three times in his career while helping the Ducks win the Stanley Cup in 2007.

Anaheim Ducks forward Max Jones has been ruled out of action for anywhere between four to six months, the team revealed on Friday. Jones suffered a torn pectoral muscle during the Ducks’ 3-2 overtime victory against the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday night.

Despite having failed to add any points to his tally during the first two games of the regular season, the Ducks will be reeling from this injury setback, especially with it coming at such a turbulent time for the team. After winning two of their first three games, including a stunning 4-1 opening game victory over the Winnipeg Jets, the Ducks’ defense appeared to collapse, as the team lost 5-6 to the Edmonton Oilers before being swept aside 5-1 by the Jets who were clearly out for revenge.

Ducks general manager Bob Murray released the following statement on Friday: “It’s a tough blow for Max as he made strides last season and was heading in the right direction this year as well. We hope to have him back this year and at full strength.”

Jones has scored 28 points in his 137 game career thus far while tallying 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in 46 games for the Ducks last season.

Anaheim Ducks have agreed to a contract extension with right winger Ondrej Kase from the Czech Republic. Kase will ink a three-year deal with the Ducks that is reportedly worth $7.8 million. The 22-year-old is the only player from the seventh round of 2014’s draft to have reached the NHL.

“Ondrej is a skilled player that has a bright future in this league,” – said Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. “He can skate and score and will continue to improve as a player as he gains more experience.”

Ducks have been actively working on contract extensions during the offseason, signing several other players on long-term deals including center Adam Henrique and goalie John Gibson.

Ondrej Kase started his professional career with Czech teams SK Kadan and Piráti Chomutov. After being drafted by Ducks, he remained one season in the Czech Republic before being assigned to Ducks’ AHL affiliate San Diego Gulls in 2015. He made his NHL debut during 2016–17 season, and played a total of 53 games and contributing 15 points. His big breakthrough came last season when he scored 20 goals and had 18 assists in 38 games. Five out of his 20 goals were ones that ultimately won the game for the Ducks.

Anaheim Ducks have secured their goal for years to come. Ducks announced on Saturday that they had signed their goalie John Gibson to eight-year, $51.2 million extension, which will keep him with the team for through the 2026-27 season. The 25-year-old was set to become a restricted agent next year.

I believe in John Gibson, as does everyone in the organization,” – said Ducks general manager Bob Murray. “This is obviously a major commitment by the club, but one we feel strongly about. John is equally committed to being a Duck. He is only now entering the prime of his career, and we are all confident his best is yet to come.

John Gibson is coming from his best career season in NHL, playing 60 games and having .926 save percentage alongside 31 victories.

I’m excited to be a part of this organization for the long term,” – said Gibson in a statement released by the team. “Staying with the Ducks was always my preference, and I couldn’t be happier. Living in the Orange County community with the great support of our fans, I can’t think of a better place to play. It’s great to be a part of the future of this team moving forward and hopefully bring a Stanley Cup back to Anaheim.

Drafted by Anaheim Ducks in the second round of 2011 NHL Entry Draft, John Gibson made his debut in the NHL as a 20-year-old. After some rough stretches, during which he had multiple assignments with Ducks’ AHL affiliates, Gibson returned to the first team in 2015 and never looked back.

Anaheim Ducks announced that they will retire numbers of Paul Kariya and Scott Niedermayer, their two former players and Hockey Hall of Famers, in the next season. The announcement was made by Ducks’ owners Henry and Susan Samueli, who revealed that Kariya’s No.9 will be retired on October 21, while Niedermayer will see his No. 27 going into rafters on February 17. The two will join Teemu Selanne, whose No. 8 was so far the only Ducks’ number retired in the franchise’s 25 years.

Paul Kariya became the Anaheim Ducks’ first-ever draft pick when they drafted him fourth overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Kariya made his debut for the Ducks in 1994 and played nine years for the team during which he helped the franchise to their first Stanley Cup appearance in 2003. During his time with the Ducks, Kariya played 606 NHL games in which he scored 300 goals and had 369 assists.

I am extremely honored and very thankful to Henry and Susan Samueli and the entire Ducks organization for this incredible recognition,” – said Kariya in a statement. “This is not something I ever dreamed would happen. I am very grateful to the community for their support.”

Unlike Kariya, Scott Niedermayer didn’t start his career with the Anaheim Ducks, but he did retire as the member of the franchise. Niedermayer spent five years, from 2005 to 2010, with the Ducks and led the team to 2007 Stanley Cup win while receiving Conn Smythe Memorial Trophy. Niedermayer played 371 NHL games for the Ducks in which he scored 50 goals and provided 204 assists alongside top level defense.

What an incredible honor,” – said Niedermayer in a statement. “I’m very grateful to have played for such an incredible organization in front of amazing Ducks fans. I’m also grateful for the amazing teammates, coaches and training staff I was able to work within Anaheim. Together we achieved great things.”
