The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly planning life without Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys will most likely release Cooper before the new league year starts on March 16th.

Cooper’s release would come just two years after he inked a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the franchise that made him one of the highest-paid wideouts in the league.

As Schefter points out, Dallas has a strong financial motivation to make this move. If they keep Cooper on board, he would be guaranteed a $20 million salary while carrying a $22 million cap hit. By releasing him, the team would get his salary off the books and would only have to take a $6 million in dead cap.

The Cowboys might be willing to deal with the financial repercussions of keeping Cooper if it wasn’t for his poor performances last season. The 27-year-old finished the year with 68 catches for 865 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. This was only the second time in his career that he failed to clear 1,000 yards mark.

If Cooper gets shown the exit door, the Cowboys will turn to Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb as their no. 1 wideout. After that, Michael Gallup should step into the no. 2 role under the condition that he agrees to a contract extension Dallas offered him earlier this week.

Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper won’t be heading to the free-agent market after all. Less than 24 hours before the official start of NFL’s free agency, Cowboys and Cooper agreed to a five-year deal.

According to reports, Cooper’s deal will net him $20 million a year and $100 million over the course of the deal. The contract comes with $60 million guaranteed while making Cooper the second highest-paid wide receiver in the league. Currently, only Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones has a bigger yearly average with $22 million.

Dallas was in a hurry to finish the deal, as it was believed that Copper would attract some big offers if he was to officially hit the market. Reportedly, Washington Redskins emerged as Cowboys’ biggest competition for the 25-year-old’s signature, but the player ended up choosing to stay in familiar surroundings.

Cowboys entered the offseason with a goal to keep both Amari Cooper and their quarterback Dak Prescott, and it seems like that goal is now met. While Prescott didn’t sign a new deal just yet, Dallas bought themselves more time with the franchise tag and is expecting to find common ground with the player in the next couple of months.

Since Cowboys acquired him back in 2018, Cooper formed a special bond with Prescott and established himself as one of the league’s best wideouts. He was especially productive last season when he had 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns en route to his fourth Pro Bowl appearance.

Giving a big contract extension to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was just a beginning of an impending spending spree for Dallas Cowboys. The team is now looking to extend quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper in order to keep their core intact and have a competitive roster for years to come.

Cowboys’ executive vice president Stephen Jones recently made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan and discussed Prescott and Cooper’s contract extensions saying that the organization has “active discussions” about the matter with their two stars.

“Yeah, we’re always open to looking at things,” – said Jones. “Certainly if there are opportunities there that make sense, then we’ll progress. I think pretty much everybody’s on it pretty good that there’s some pretty active discussions now with Dak and Amari, but it doesn’t mean that some can’t pick up in short order with other players that we have on our roster that we certainly want to keep here in Dallas and have them remain Cowboys in the future.”

Both Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper are currently entering the final years of their rookie contracts which makes the matter more urgent for Dallas. Re-signing Cooper, who will earn $13.924 million in 2019, might not be such a difficult since Cowboys expect him to ask for a contract that carries a similar yearly value. Talks with Prescott, on the other hand, might be more troublesome.

Given the fact that Prescott was a fourth-round pick, he was making a lot less than a usual starting QB in NFL and is set to earn just around $2 million in 2019. This makes it likely for him to ask for a huge deal in order to make up for the difference. Cowboys, on the other hand, are not sure they are ready to invest such money in a quarterback that got them to just one playoff win in three seasons. One thing is for sure, however; both parties are in for long negotiations.

Dallas Cowboys’ wideout Amari Cooper will face a tough task in the upcoming playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams since he will go up against Pro Bowl cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. And, while some NFL analysts are questioning Cooper’s ability to respond to this challenge, the 24-year-old isn’t worried at all.

“I’ve played against those guys twice a year, both of them, I know them in and out,” – said Cooper about the potential matchups. “I know how they play, and I’m able to tell my teammates, the quarterback their tendencies.”

As a member of Oakland Raiders, who drafted him fourth overall in 2015, Amari Cooper played six times against Aqib Talib during the time the 32-year-old was a member of Denver Broncos. In those six games, Cooper didn’t have his best performances since he totaled 17 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns.

Against Marcus Peters, however, Copper was a lot better and has had 32 receptions for 457 yards and two touchdowns in six matches.

After more than three years in Oakland, Amari Cooper was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in October 2018 for a 2019 first round draft pick. This turned out to be a great trade for the Cowboys since Cooper played a crucial role in helping the team to win the NFC East with 53 receptions for 725 yards and six touchdowns.

The Dallas Cowboys may have lost Sunday’s game to the Philadelphia Eagles, but they didn’t go down easy. New signing Amari Cooper rose to the occasion, completing three touchdown passes for 217 yards.

While the first round pick has been phenomenal since joining Dallas, running back Dak Prescott couldn’t help but appreciate his teammate.

“He is an incredible player,” Prescott said. “I knew he was good. I knew he was going to get separation and get open and make great catches. But when you just see the run after catch and breaking tackles and being that great of a player. As I said, I’m just thankful we got that trade.”

Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones has previously shared a similar statement, saying Cooper has been every penny he was signed for. Since his arrival, Dallas has won five games and only lost one, establishing a firm spot in the NFC East.

In the six games Cooper has played for Dallas, the Cowboys have recorded 1,714 yards and nine touchdowns. In seven games without him, the team recorded eight touchdowns and 1,417 yards. Prescott has also improved as a player with Cooper’s assistance. His pass completion is up to 74%. He has had more yards and a better passer rating than previously.

Oakland Raiders didn’t want to let wide receiver Amari Cooper go for anything less than a first-round draft pick, and they ended up getting just that. Raiders’ general manager Reggie McKenzie announced on Monday that Cooper was traded to Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2019 first rounder.

I got a call from [Cowboys vice president] Stephen Jones this morning, he put it on the table, what he wanted to do, and he wanted the player, and he gave me the pick, and that’s what it came down to,” – McKenzie told reporters.

With this trade, Oakland Raiders have got back what they invested into Amari Cooper in the first place, considering they have taken him fourth overall in 2015 draft. Cooper started his NFL career with two consecutive Pro Bowl appearances and 1,000+ yards seasons, but he was largely inconsistent in the past couple of years, which encouraged the rebuilding Raiders to move on from him.

Oakland is stockpiling draft picks for the future and already has five first round pick in 2019 and 2020, which should enable newly-appointed head coach Jon Gruden to construct the team the way he wants.

I hate to see good players go, but I was on the practice field when Reggie came to me and said the Cowboys would do this for a No. 1 and I said, ‘Let’s do it,'” – said Gruden. “We’re going to try to build this thing the right way. We now have five No. 1 picks in the next two years, so I’m excited about that.

While some would regard the first round pick as an overpay for Amari Cooper, Dallas Cowboys don’t mind since they didn’t have a primary wide receiver since moving on from Dez Bryant in the offseason. Their leading receiver is Cole Beasley with 33 receptions and 350 yards, while no other Dallas’ wideout has more than 13 receptions. With Cooper, the Cowboys should finally have their passing game sorted out and maybe even make a run for the playoffs.
