Cincinnati Bengals will have A.J. Green on their roster in 2020 despite failing to agree to a long-term extension with the star wideout. The team announced on Friday that Green signed his franchise tender and intends to report to training camp.

Green will earn $18.2 million playing on the tag this season and will become a free agent in 2021.

Green didn’t play at all in 2019, dealing with an ankle injury he picked up during training camp. Still, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor views the 31-year-old Pro Bowler as the key player in his attempts to turn around the franchise.

“A.J. is one of the best receivers in the NFL,” said Taylor after learning the news. “He’s an important part of our plans, and we’re thrilled to have him in the fold from Day 1. We’re looking forward to the impact of his talent and leadership on our offense this season.”

A.J. Green is entering his 10th season in NFL, being selected No.4 by Bengals in 2011 NFL Draft. Since then, Green positioned himself as one of the best wide receivers in the game and one of the best in franchise history.

Green’s career numbers include 8,907 receiving yards and 602 receptions, ranking second on the team’s all-time list in both categories. He is also third in receiving touchdowns with 63.

Cincinnati Bengals’ offense just got another boost for the upcoming 2020 NFL season. According to the team’s head coach Zac Taylor, wideout A.J. Green is “fully healthy” and ready for action.

Green injured his ankle during the training camp last year and was forced to miss the entire 2019 season. However, it appears that the injury is now behind him and that the 31-year-old will have no limitations once the NFL season kicks off.

“Everything has been positive with A.J. Green,” Taylor told The Athletic. “He’s fully healthy and he’s working hard. He’s been in Atlanta. It’s all been positive in that regard.”

Bengals have the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, which they are expected to use on LSU’s quarterback Joe Burrow. Having veterans like A.J. Green on the field to help him would greatly benefit Burrow and would likely ease his transition into the pros. That is, of course, if Green remains with the Bengals.

Green was mentioned in trade talks last season as a result of Bengals’ unwillingness to accommodate his wishes for a new, long term contract.  Despite the player’s status as one of the best wideouts in the game, Cincinnati is reportedly concern about his health issues, which caused him to miss 23 games in the last two seasons.

Bengals have Green under contract for this season thanks to the franchise tag they placed on him in March, but it’s unlikely that the player will be happy playing out the season under these terms. In case that the two sides don’t come to an agreement, it wouldn’t be surprising that a healthy Green stars for some other franchise in the fall.

Despite often being mentioned in trade rumors, Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green remained with Cincinnati Bengals past the NFL trade deadline. But things might change in the offseason.

Green, who recently returned to practice after missing the first eight weeks with an ankle injury, told reporters on Wednesday that he doesn’t want to be franchise tagged next season. In case the Bengals don’t want to give him a long term deal, the 31-year-old would prefer to move elsewhere.

“I’m not into a one-year,” – said Green. “Give me a long-term [deal] or just let me go.”

Green is currently in the final year of his four-year, $60 million contract and it is understandable that he wants long-term security. Still, he isn’t willing to use holdout, the NFL players’ preferred method of forcing a new deal.

“That’s not me,” – he added. “I’m not giving free money away. I don’t care what that is.”

A.J. Green is expected to make his debut in 2019 following Bengals’ bye in Week 10. His return will definitely help Cincinnati put some points on board, something they have been struggling with in the first eight weeks.

Green also struggled with injuries in 2018, when he was limited to nine games. Still, he managed to be productive, contributing with 694 yards and six touchdowns.

Although Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green repeatedly stated in the past that he wants to finish his career with Cincinnati Bengals, that is becoming less of an option with each week of the 2019 NFL season.

Bengals are currently sitting at 0-5 record, and the word around the league is that they are strongly considering moving some of their veteran players. Green, who is approaching the end of his deal, is arguably their biggest asset, and trading him would likely help the team to accumulate badly-needed draft capital for an impending rebuild.

And while Green has been a subject of trade rumors for weeks now, he insists that this talk hasn’t got to him yet. But, if something happens, he will be ready for that.

“I tell everybody I haven’t heard anything,” – said Green while talking with Bengals’ official website. “I don’t fantasize about anything like that. I’m just trying to get healthy and go from there. I’m prepared for anything. A trade’s not going to change who I am. I’m still going to play. I’m still going to be A.J.”

A.J. Green is one of the best receivers in the game when healthy, but injuries have slowed him down lately, which could affect his trade value. Green missed almost half of the 2018 season due to a toe injury and has been dealing with an ankle injury that prevented him from playing in 2019. With that being said, if Bengals decided to put him on the market, there will surely be no lack of interest in his services.

Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green is determined to stay with Cincinnati Bengals for years to come.

Green, who is in the final year of his contract, recently told reporters that he considers Cincinnati his “home,” and that he can’t see himself “playing anywhere else” except with the Bengals.

“Cincinnati is home for me,” – said Green while at his youth camp. “I’ve been here going on nine years. This is home as much as South Carolina. This is all I know, Cincinnati. I can’t see myself playing anywhere else or playing in any different city. Hopefully, I can be here for a couple more years, but we’ll see on that part.”

Although he had problems with injuries in the last three seasons, Green is still considered one of the best wideouts in the league. He was limited to eight games in 2018 but still managed to catch 45 passes for 687 yards and six touchdowns. This is why Bengals will most likely fulfill his wish and keep the 30-year-old in Cincinnati for several more years. It just remains to be seen how much will this cost them.

A.J. Green has all sorts of motivation to stay with Bengals, but the most significant one would be that he could go down as the greatest wide receiver in franchise’s history. Green is currently second in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns but he is closing in on leader Chad Johnson and might leap over him in couple of seasons.

Since being selected in the second round of 2011 NFL Draft, Green made seven consecutive Pro Bowls and has two Second-team All-Pro honors. His NFL career stats include 602 receptions for 8,907 yards and 63 touchdowns.
