The 2028 Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, are expanding with five new sports, including flag football, cricket, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and squash.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the decision to include the new sports in an announcement on Monday.

“We want L.A. 2028 to have the same springboard effect for our five sports,” said Los Angeles organizing committee chairman Casey Wasserman. “In L.A. we are dreamers and doers.”

Flag football will be making its debut at the Olympics, and its introduction might lead to some of the best NFL players taking part in the Olympics. Full-contact football was previously played at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles as a demonstration sport.

Baseball/softball was a regular feature at the Olympics from 1992 to 2008. It was dropped from the list of competitions in 2012 before being brought back in 2020 as a one-time thing.

Cricket was originally supposed to be part of the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens as the only team sport, but there were not enough entries to organize the competition. The sport ended up making the cut in 1900 at the Paris Summer Olympics, which ended up being its only Olympics appearance.

Lacrosse was featured twice at the Olympics, but not since 1908. Squash, on the other hand, will make its debut.

The U.S. Women won the gold medal in the team competition at the 2023 World Gymnastics Championship. This is the seventh straight time that the U.S. women were crowned the world champions, more than any other gymnastic team in either women’s or men’s category.

Team USA was led by Simone Biles, who earned her 20th gold medal at the World Championships and 26th medal overall. With an overall medal tally of 33, including seven Olympic medals, Biles is the most decorated gymnast in the history of the sport.

“It wasn’t Team USA’s best day,” Biles said after the event. “It’s crazy, we still pulled it out. So I’m really, really proud of the team.”

The win also marks Biles’ comeback to the big stage. The 26-year-old gymnast had a disappointing outing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that saw her only win a bronze medal in Balance beam. She then took a two-year hiatus from gymnastics before returning to competition at the 2023 U.S. Classic.

Biles will also have a chance to add more to her medal tally. She will compete in the individual competition in all disciplines and is aiming to get an all-around title. That would be the sixth time she would achieve the feat.

When Usain Bolt retired in 2017, he did so while being considered the greatest sprinter in history. But even with nothing else left to prove, Bolt still thought about making a shocking comeback at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In a recent chat with Ade Adedoyin of BBC Sport, Bolt admitted that he wanted to come out of retirement in 2019 and try to add to his eight gold Olympic medals. However, the 35-year-old runner quickly gave up on the idea after bringing up the subject to his coach.

“I remember I went to him in 2019 and said, ‘what do you think about coming back for the Olympics?’ And he looked at me and said ‘don’t even start,'” Bolt shared. “So if it’s not my coach, I’m not going to do it, because I believe in him, and if he says no, it’s no—but I’ve got that itch, though.”

Despite having the itch, Bolt won’t act on it. He added that it’s too late now for that and that he is off to new ventures.

Since retiring from the track and field, Usain Bolt has tried to stay involved in the world of sports. He attempted to become a professional soccer player and even spent eight weeks on the roster of Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners. Bolt played in several friendlies and even scored two goals before deciding to leave the club and put an end to his soccer career.

Team USA has continued their domination in the floor exercise at the Olympics. After Aly Raisman and Simone Biles won gold medals in 2012 and 2016, respectively, Jade Carey continued the tradition and won the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Carey, who is competing at her first Olympics, entered the floor exercise after failing to get the medal at the all-around and vault. But the 21-year-old Phoenix-native bounced back in spectacular fashion on the floor, scoring 14.366 and finishing well ahead of second-placed Italian gymnast Vanessa Ferrari (14.200). Japan’s Mai Murakami and ROC’s Angelina Melnikova tied for third place.

More good news came for the United States on Monday, as Simone Biles confirmed she would compete in the balance beam finals. She will aim to better her results from the 2016 Olympics in Rio, where she took home the bronze medal.

Biles previously withdraw from multiple events, including all-around and vault, citing mental health as the reason.

In other Olympics news, Caeleb Dressel continued his medal hunt in Tokyo over the weekend and currently has five golds. This includes the medal in the 100m butterfly event, where he also broke his own world record.

Dressel set the record back in 2019 with a 49.50 performance at the World Championship. This time around, the 24-year-old swimmer finished the race at an impressive 49.45.

The United States women’s national team, on the other hand, is poised to have another disappointing outing at the Olympics’ soccer tournament. USWNT failed to make the finals, being handed a 1-0 loss by Canada in the semi-finals. All is not lost, however, as USWNT still has a chance to grab a bronze medal.

The U.S. still leads all countries in their medals count with 64. China is placed second with 62 medals while being the top gold getter with 29, while ROC has 50 medals in total.

The United States continued to add to their medal count at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Monday. This included Katie Ledecky winning the silver in the 400m free and Team USA grabbing the gold in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

Ledecky entered the competition as an overwhelming favorite, having won the gold in the 400m free at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She came in strong this time as well, posting her second-best career time (3:57.36), but it wasn’t enough to beat Australia’s Ariarne Titmus in a closely contested showdown. This was Titmus’ first medal in her Olympics debut.

Team USA, on the other hand, didn’t leave any room for doubt in the 4×100 freestyle relay. Caeleb Dressel, who is billed as a successor to the legendary Michael Phelps, propelled Team USA to an early lead in the first leg allowing Blake Pieroni, Bowe Becker, and Zach Apple to finish the job with ease.

En route to winning the competition, which also saw Italy and Australia finishing in the second and third place respectively, Team USA posted the third-best time in history with 3:08.97.

In the first three days of the Olympics, the United States managed to win 14 medals, trailing only China’s coup of 15. The U.S. has seven golds, tied with Japan for most so far, alongside three silver and four bronze medals.

Most gold medals for Team USA came from shooting competitions so far. Amber English took the gold in women’s skeet on Sunday, breaking the Olympics record in the process. Vincent Hancock won his third gold Olympic medal in men’s skeet, while William Shaner was the best in Men’s 10m air rifle.

Lee Kiefer (fencing), Anastasija Zolotic (taekwondo), and Chase Kalisz (swimming) also added to the count.

We won’t be seeing Seattle Seahawks wideout DK Metcalf at the Olympic Games anytime soon. Metcalf took part in the 100 meters race at the USA Track and Field Golden Games and Distance Open on Sunday, hoping to qualify for Olympic trials. Unfortunately, he didn’t run fast enough to make the cut.

Metcalf had an official time of 10.37 seconds, finishing last in his race and coming 15th out of 17 contestants. The Pro Bowl wide receiver was faster than Derick Silva (10.38) and Maurice Eaddy (10.44).

Despite coming short, Metcalf drew praise for holding his own against some of the world’s best sprinters. This included positive comments from former silver and bronze Olympic medalist Ato Boldon.

“He did not embarrass himself,” said Boldon, who previously predicted Metcalf will run around 10.6. “He hung with the pack. Yes, I think he’s eighth. But he ran well. I didn’t think he was going to run anywhere near that well.”

Metcalf himself was disappointed with the result but told NBC that he was grateful for having this opportunity.

“It’s very different from football speed, which I just realized,” he added.

This was the first time competing in track and field for DK Metcalf since high school. While attending Oxford High School, Metcalf was successful in the hurdle and long-jump competitions while also taking part in the school’s 4×100 meter relay team.

Metcalf ended up opting for football after high school and ended up playing three years at Ole Miss. He was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks and went on to earn All-Pro, and Pro Bowl nods in his second year as a pro.

The made-to-measure 3D-printed Adidas shoes of your dreams are not quite here yet, but they have just made one step closer to reality. In collaboration with a small Silicone-Valley start-up called Carbon, the German sportswear giant is planning to mass-produce sports shoes with 3D-printed soles.

Until now, 3D printing for sports shoe soles has taken too long and has been of a quality that is too low to make them commercially viable. The “Digital Light Synthesis” process used by Carbon uses light to shape a liquid resin that is made stable through a heating process. This is very different from the traditional method used by existing 3D printers which build up thin layers of plastic to create their product.

Sneaker News

Adidas rivals at Nike have partnered with Hewlett-Packard in the race to be first over the line with 3D-printed soles, but the partners are using the traditional printing process. Even with Hewlett-Packard taking the printing to 10 times faster at half of the cost, Nike has only produced prototypes and a few pairs of sneakers for some of its sponsored athletes. The American partners appear to be nowhere near achieving commercial production.

Sneaker News

That’s not to say that the Adidas/Carbon partnership is ready to manufacture thousands of pairs of shoes today. Even with Carbon’s new process, it currently takes an hour and a half to print a single sole, but Adidas believe they can bring that production time down to a much more reasonable 20 minutes each.

The printed sole shoes are slated to hit stores later this year with 5,000 units planned and a further 100,000 pairs to be shipped to stores by the end of 2018. However, a select group of 300 lucky friends and family of Adidas will get their feet into a pair of the “Futurecraft 4-D” shoes this month.

There is no word yet on the price of the new shoes, but last year Adidas sold a limited number of experimental pairs made with the old 3D process for $333. The soles of those shoes were considered overly thick and rigid, but they still sold out almost instantly, so there is no telling how much customers may be willing to spend on the Futurecraft 4-D.

There are a few reasons why you might not want to buy straight away, though. Adidas plan to make some small production runs with sneakers made specifically for individual sports. They are also planning to put out shoes for certain cities, and if this is successful, then the sky could be the limit for customization.

Ultimately, Adidas hope to have stores where you can go in, be measured and design your perfect shoe. The soles will be printed just for you with alterations being made to take account of your weight, movement patterns and the sport you intend to play. It may not quite be here yet, but the made-to-measure sports shoe that everyone can afford is freakily close to being within reach.
