MLS side Colorado Rapids is reportedly in talks with Manchester City about the acquisition of U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen. According to a report by The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, the negotiations between the two teams have been “complicated” but “progressing”.

Steffen is under contract with the Premier League side through the 2024-25 season. He is currently sidelined with a knee injury that required him to get surgery back in the summer.

Getting Steffen would be a big coup for Colorado Rapids. Despite his inability to get regular playing time with City, the 28-year-old would immediately become one of the best goalies in the MLS. The Rapids are in need of reliable goalkeeping, considering they conceded 54 goals in the 2023 regular season, one of the major reasons why they finished at the bottom of the Western Conference.

Zack Steffen played four seasons in MLS with Columbus Crew SC before securing a $7 million transfer to Manchester City in 2019. During his time with the club, Steffen made 21 appearances while also being sent out on season-long loans with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Middlesbrough.

Steffen hasn’t played since December due to kneecap issues and has only recovered in full recently. However, the 25-year-old didn’t manage to stay healthy for long, as he suffered knee ligament damage during one of the first training sessions since Bundesliga got suspended due to coronavirus pandemic.

The club’s sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel told reporters that Steffen’s current injury isn’t connected to the kneecap issues he had before.

“With Zack Steffen it is particularly annoying,” said Pfannenstiel on Monday. “We had only just got a grip on his patellar tendon problems thanks to hard work.”

Zack Steffen is currently on a year-long loan in Fortuna from Manchester City. He started the 2019/20 Bundesliga season as the club’s first choice at goalkeeper and managed to make 17 appearances before the injury. During that time, he made 64 saves and had two clean sheets.
