The Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa thought about walking away from football after suffering multiple concussions last season. Tagovailoa shared this during a press conference on Wednesday.

According to Tagovailoa, he decided against retiring partially because he wants his son to see him play at the highest level.

“I considered it for a time, having sat down with my family, having sat down with my wife, and having those kind of conversations,” Tagovailoa said. “But it would be really hard for me to walk away from this game with how old I am, with my son.”

Tagovailoa also said that he was encouraged by positive opinions from the doctors, who said that he isn’t at risk because of the concussions he suffered.

“That also played into the factor of my decision-making and wanting to come back and play,” the 25-year-old player added.

Tua Tagovailoa entered the concussion protocol two times during 2022, both times after hitting his head on the ground during a tackle. He missed five games, including the playoffs but still managed to rack up 3,548 passing yards with 25 touchdowns.

Tagovailoa’s concussion problems sparked rumors that the Dolphins are worried about his long-term future in the league. However, the team denied those reports and backed the Alabama product by picking up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal.

The Miami Dolphins have repeatedly said they consider Tua Tagovailoa as their quarterback of the future. And now they’ve put their money where their mouth is, picking up a fifth-year option on Tagovailoa’s rookie contract.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the fifth-year option guarantees Tagovailoa a salary of $23.2 million in the 2024 season.

There were a lot of rumors about Tagovailoa’s future in recent months and whether Miami actually believes he is the right guy to lead the franchise. While he was one of the best quarterbacks in the league when on the field in 2022, there were questions about his ability to stay healthy. He was in concussion protocol multiple times and missed four games in the regular season and the Dolphins’ wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills.

Still, the Dolphins reportedly believe the concussions were just unfortunate circumstances and were encouraged by Tagovailoa’s progress in his third year as a pro. Despite playing only 13 games, he threw for 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Despite taking Tua Tagovailoa with the No.5 pick in 2020, the Dolphins have flirted with a number of veteran quarterbacks since then. Previous coach Brian Flores preferred the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick instead of Alabama product, while there were also rumors Tom Brady might join the franchise at some point. But after Mike McDaniel took over as head coach ahead of the 2022 season, he made it clear he believes in Tagovailoa and has done nothing to show differently since then.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has cleared concussion protocol a month after entering it, NFL Network reported on Thursday. Tagovailoa was diagnosed with his second concussion of the season after a knock to the head during Miami’s 26-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Christmas Day. He was placed into concussion protocol and missed the Dolphins’ final three games of the season as a result.

Named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl Games, Tagovailoa will not be participating despite having cleared the protocol, one source claimed. According to said source, Tagovailoa’s stay in concussion protocol was not the result of any debilitating symptoms or setbacks, but rather that the length of the stay was pre-determined.

Tagovailoa constantly proved himself as one of Miami’s star players this season, being named FedEx Air Player of the Week in Week 2 and Week 8. He also set career highs in completion percentage, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.

Entering the 2023 season, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier confirmed that Tagovailoa will be Miami’s starting quarterback. According to doctors who have evaluated the player, Tagovailoa’s concussions should not leave him susceptible to further head injuries.

The Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out for the upcoming wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills. The news was confirmed by the Dolphins’ head coach Mike McDaniel during a press conference on Wednesday.

Tagovailoa has been out since suffering a concussion, his second of the season,  in a Week 16 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Alabama product hasn’t been clear to take part in football activities since, prompting McDaniel to make this decision.

“He was an incredible part of the entire season,” McDaniel said. “I think eight of our wins were as a result of him playing quarterback, among the team, and that did not come because it was just gifted. That was a lot of work and preparation, so it’s very frustrating, much as a lot of things in life and football are.”

Tagovailoa has been playing on an MVP level early in the season, but his hot start was spoiled by a concussion in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He started 13 games in 2022 altogether, going 8–5 and throwing for 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

With Tagovailoa out, the Dolphins will likely be forced to turn to third-string quarterback rookie Skylar Thompson. The team’s backup QB Teddy Bridgewater is dealing with a dislocated finger on his throwing hand and will most likely also be unavailable against the Bills.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has entered concussion protocol after displaying concussion symptoms, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel confirmed on Monday.

Tagovailoa displayed and admitted to having concussion symptoms during discussions with team doctors on Monday, prompting them to place Tagovailoa immediately into concussion protocol. The quarterback is believed to have suffered a concussion during the Dolphins’ 26-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, however, McDaniel remains unsure on which play he suffered the injury.

This is the second time that Tagovailoa has been placed into concussion protocol this season, the first time coming in Week 4 after he took a hit during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was hospitalized after his head hit the turf and remained on the sidelines for the next two games.

Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is expected to step to take first-team snaps, however, McDaniel has so far refused to name a replacement quarterback for the game against the New England Patriots on Sunday, explaining that it is still too early to decide.

“I just want guys to really be done right by, by the information we have, the science, and all the medical expertise that we rely on,” McDaniel said to the press. “I care very deeply about each and every player, I take that very serious. I just want him to get healthy and have peace of mind in that regard. … It’s about the human being and making sure he’s squared away.”

Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa outdueled Arizona Cardinals second-year quarterback Kyler Murray to get his second-straight win.

Tagovailoa is the first Dolphins QB to win his first two career starts in 11 years. He completed 20-28 passes for 248 yards and threw for two touchdowns to lead Miami to a 34-31 come-from-behind victory.

The Dolphins were down by a touchdown, but ended up scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Tagovailoa tied the game up at 31 with 11 minutes to play with a touchdown pass to receiver Mack Hollins. It was then up to kicker Jason Sanders booted a 50-yard field goal with 3:30 left in regulation to give the Dolphins the three-point victory.

Despite the loss, Murray was brilliant for Arizona, completing 21 of 26 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown and had a career-high 106 yards rushing.

Murray now has seven games this season in which he tallied both a passing and running touchdown.

The Dolphins have now won four games in a row and will look to continue their winning streak next week against the Los Angeles Chargers, who have dropped their last two.

The Miami Dolphins selected standout quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the 5th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. After serving as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick’s backup for the first six games of the season, the team has decided that it’s his turn to take the reins.

Tagovailoa, who made his NFL debut in the fourth quarter of last weekend’s win over the New York Jets, is set to step into the starting position after the team’s Week 7 bye.

The former Alabama standout got to play in the Dolphins’ final possession of the game last week, with Fitzpatrick applauding him on the sideline, and he impressed by completing his first two NFL passes.

The Dolphins, who find themselves right in the hunt of the playoff race at 3-3, look to be making the move to go with Tagovailoa due to his higher upside and the progress that he has made after an abbreviated preseason.

The 2018 AP All-American, who missed the second half of the 2019 college football season after suffering a dislocated and fractured hip, is finally healthy and ready to go.

Tagovailoa will have a tough task in his first game as the starter, as his team will host the 4-2 Los Angeles Rams.

“Fitzmagic” continues to live on in Miami. Well, at least for the next week.

Dolphins decided to remove any doubts about their starting quarterback in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers and announced that Ryan Fitzpatrick will start the game under center. The news comes after speculations that head coach Brian Flores is considering turning over the offense to Tua Tagovailoa, Miami’s No.5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Dolphins are 1-3 this season with Fitzpatrick as a starter, with the 37-year-old experiencing notable oscillations in his game in 2020. He is currently completing 69.0 percent of his passes, having thrown for 994 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Still, Flores is hesitant to bench Fitzpatrick, believing that Tagovailoa could benefit from sitting behind the veteran before being thrown into the fire. Also, Alabama’s product underwent hip surgery, and the organization doesn’t want to rush his return to the field.

On the other hand, other teams that started rookie quarterbacks this season, Cincinnati Bengals and LA Chargers, greatly benefited from this decision. This likely increases the pressure on Miami to do the same, with their fan base already asking for a change at the position.

If Dolphins continue to underperform and Fitzpatrick struggles in Week 5, it shouldn’t be surprising that Flores backs on his decision and gives Tagovailoa a chance.

Fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and new Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has chosen the number that he will wear with his new team.

Tagovailoa, who was unable to choose the #13 jersey that he wore in college due to the number being retired in honor of Dolphins great Joe Marino, will go with number 1 in his pro career.

The Hawaii native announced his choice in a post on social media on Tuesday, sending Dolphins fans scrambling to their team’s online store to order his new jersey.

Tagovailoa, a finalist for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, was the second signal-caller selected in this year’s draft. The long-presumed first overall pick in the draft fell to Miami at #5 after a 2019 season that saw him suffer a serious hip injury as well as the emergence of first overall pick Joe Burrow.

Alabama Crimson Tide will have to find a new quarterback next year. Alabama’s current QB Tua Tagovailoa decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

Tagovailoa announced his decision at the press conference on Monday.

“With lots of prayers, thoughts and guidance I have decided that I will enter the 2020 NFL draft,” said Tagovailoa. “It was a hard decision all around.”

Entering 2019, Tagovailoa was considered an almost unanimous first overall pick in 2020. However, his season was cut short due to a hip surgery, which caused his draft stocks to drop. The 21-year-old is now considered to be a top 10 pick, with the possibility of him dropping even more, depending on how teams are afraid of his injury history.

Tua Tagovailoa made a name for himself in 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship, when he stepped in for Jalen Hurts and led the Crimson Tide to a comeback win. He followed that up with an impressive 2018 season, in which he won the Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Award.

Tagovailoa started 2019 on a high note as well but ended up having to undergo ankle surgery in Week 6. He returned after three games, but didn’t manage to stay healthy for too long as he dislocated his hip against Mississippi State.

While there is no doubt that Tagovailoa has the talents to have a successful career in the NFL, it’s unclear how much importance teams will put on his health struggles. This will probably be determined during the NFL Combine when he will be able to show how much the injuries affected him.
