Toronto Maple Leafs’ veteran goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov will continue his 2023-24 season in the AHL. After clearing the waivers earlier this week, Samsonov is being sent to the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, Toronto Marlins.

Samsonov struggled mightily so far in the season, having a 3.94 goals-against average and .862 save percentage in 15 games. These are his worst stats since entering the NHL and second-worst in the league in 2023-24 among goalies with at least 10 appearances.

As a result, the Maple Leafs placed Samsonov on waivers on Sunday, but the 26-year-old player ended up being unclaimed. The team now hopes that some time out of the spotlight might help him get his form back on track.

“I need to figure out everything in my head,” Samsonov said of his struggles. “That’s the first [thing]. It’s not about technique. It’s not about, you know, it’s not about nothing. Just in the head.”

In the meantime, the Maple Leafs will likely lean heavily on veteran Martin Jones while hoping that Joseph Woll can return from his high ankle sprain sooner rather than later.

Ilya Samsonov signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a one-year, $1.8 million contract in 2022. After a career-best campaign, which saw him post a .919 save percentage and 2.33 goals-against average, Samsonov received a one-year, $3.55 million deal through arbitration.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are sticking with head coach Sheldon Keefe. The franchise announced on Wednesday that Keefe inked a new multi-year deal, putting an end to rumors surrounding his future.

The Maple Leafs didn’t reveal the details of the contract, but it is reportedly a two-year extension. Keefe had one year left on his previous deal.

“Coaching this team has been a great privilege, and I’m truly excited at the opportunity to continue building towards our ultimate goal,” Keefe said in a statement released by the team.

Keefe led the Maple Leafs to a 50-21-11 record and second place in the Atlantic Division last season. The team went on to advance to the second round of Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Despite a promising run, it appeared that Keefe might be out after Toronto hired Brad Treliving as their new general manager. However, Treliving opted for consistency, believing that the Maple Leafs could make another step forward with Keefe at the helm.

“Since I’ve joined the Maple Leafs, I’ve been very impressed with Sheldon,” Treliving said. “He has shown great leadership skills with his staff and our players and has a clear vision for this team and where it needs to get to.”

Sheldon Keefe started to venture into coaching after finishing his brief playing career in 2006. He coached in various lower leagues since then, including CCHL and OHL, before being hired by Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies in 2005. During his time with the Marlies, he won the Calder Cup in 2017-18.

Keefe took over the Maple Leafs for a shortened 2019–20 NHL campaign and made the playoffs in each season he was in charge. He has a 166-71-30 head coaching record in the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won’t be making a head coaching change ahead of the 2023-24 NHL season after all. The team confirmed on Tuesday that last season’s head coach Sheldon Keefe will be in charge of the team for the upcoming campaign as well.

Keefe did a good job with the Leafs in 2022-23, leading them to a 50-21-11 record and the Second Round of Stanley Cup playoffs. This was the first time since 2004 that Toronto won a playoff series.

However, the Leafs’ ownership decided to fire general manager Kyle Dubas at the end of the season and replace him with Brad Treliving. This prompted rumors that Treliving would bring in his own coach and move on from Keefe.

Treliving cleared any doubts about Keefe’s future on Tuesday, saying that the 42-year-old will keep his job next season and beyond that. Keefe is entering the final year of his contract and will be offered an extension in the near future.

“I think Sheldon’s got a really good relationship with his players. I think there’s a really strong bond. There’s lots of belief both ways,” Treliving said.

Sheldon Keefe started his coaching career in minor hockey leagues before being hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019-20 as a first-time NHL head coach. He led the Leafs to playoffs in each of his four seasons at the helm and has a 166 -71 – 30 regular-season record.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant addition to their roster as they prepare for a deep playoff run this season. The Canadian team acquired St. Louis Blues’ captain Ryan O’Reilly in a three-team trade that also included the Minnesota Wild.

The trade will see the Maple Leafs acquiring O’Reilly and veteran forward Noel Acciari from the Blues and prospect Josh Pillar from the Wild. The Blues will get prospect Mikhail Abramov and AHL center Adam Gaudette alongside a first-round pick and second-round pick in 2023 as well as a second-rounder in 2024 from Toronto. Finally, the Wild will get a fourth-round selection from the Maple Leafs in 2025 for their role in the deal.

According to reports, the agreement between the three sides will also see the Blues retaining 50 percent and the Wild retaining 25% of O’Reilly’s $7.5-million cap hit for this season.

Ryan O’Reilly is a three-time All-Star who was a key figure in the Blues’ Stanley Cup-winning run in the 2018-19 season. The St. Louis team named him a captain after Alex Pietrangelo left in 2020, after which he continued to be one of the team’s best performers. Still, his departure doesn’t come as a surprise.

O’Reilly is set to become a free agent in the summer and was interested in staying with the Blues. However, the two sides couldn’t hammer out an agreement despite the 32-year-old player being open and taking a bit less money.

In 40 games he played with the Blues this season, O’Reilly contributed 12 goals and seven assists for a total of 19 points. He has 691 points in his 14 years in NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leaf’s center Auston Matthews will be absent for at least three weeks after picking up a knee injury, the team announced on Friday.

Matthews sprained his knee during the Leafs’ 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. According to the Leafs, Matthews could remain sidelined for up to six weeks depending on his recovery process. With the NHL All-Star break and the Leafs’ bye week coinciding with his absence, Matthews will at least not miss playing time during such events.

As the reigning MVP, Matthews has been an impactful player for the Leafs over the past season, winning the Hart Trophy after leading the NHL scoring charts with 60 goals. This season, he has scored 57 points to date. Matthews was also voted an All-Star by fans due to his efforts, however, he will miss the All-Star game through injury.

With a 30-11-8 record this season, the Maple Leafs have been in fine form, winning four of their past six games and scoring 68 points, the second most in the league behind Atlantic Division rivals the Boston Bruins.

Two-time NHL All-Star center Jason Spezza confirmed over the weekend that he is ending his playing career. However, this decision doesn’t mean Spezza will leave the league altogether.

According to the Toronto Maple Leafs, with whom Spezza spent the last three seasons, the 38-year-old player will transition to a front-office role with the franchise. He is set to serve as a “special assistant” to the Leafs’ general manager Kyle Dubas.

Jason Spezza played 19 years in NHL and spent 11 of them with the Ottawa Senators. This is where he left his biggest mark, receiving two All-Star nods and helping the franchise reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Spezza was traded to the Dallas Stars in 2014 and ended up playing five seasons with the franchise before signing with Maple Leafs as a free agent ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Spezza retires having played 1,248 games in NHL. He scored 363 goals and dished 632 assists for a total of 995 points.

“To the fans — in Ottawa, Dallas, Toronto, and across the league — your impact on the game is immeasurable,” said Spezza in a statement released by the team. “I’ll never be able to replicate that feeling of stepping onto the ice to the roar of the crowd, but it is something I’ll always remember. Thank you.”

Veteran defenseman Mark Giordano will get two more shots at winning the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs after coming short this season. The 38-year-old player just signed a two-year extension with the Maple Leafs that will keep him at the franchise through the 2023-24 NHL season.

The Maple Leafs confirmed the news on the weekend, revealing that Giordano will get $800,000 annually as part of the deal.

Giordano joined Toronto ahead of the NHL trade deadline from Seattle Kraken. He contributed with 12 points (two goals and 10 assists) in 20 games during the regular season but failed to help the team make a deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Maple Leafs were eliminated in the first round by Tampa Bay Lightning despite leading the series three times.

Mark Giordano spent the majority of his pro career with Calgary Flames, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2004. During his 15 seasons in Flames jersey, Giordano made three All-Star teams and was named the recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy for league’s best defenseman in 2019. Curiously, the majority of his individual honors came after 2015.

Despite a late-career Renaissance, the Flames left Giordano exposed in the 2021 NFHL Expansion draft. The Seattle Kraken jumped on the opportunity to select him, and he even started the franchise’s inaugural season as a captain. But while Giordano was productive in Seattle, the two sides decided it was time for an early split after the Leafs came calling. The trade allowed Giordano to play for a contender and do so in his hometown of Toronto, while Kraken got some valuable assets to speed up the growth of the franchise.

Expect to see the Toronto Maple Leafs a lot more on TikTok during this NHL season. The team just announced that they have signed a sponsorship deal with the popular social media app for 2021-22 that includes the placement of the TikTok logo on the Maple Leafs helmets.

According to the announcement made on Wednesday, the two sides agreed to a one-year partnership that will also see them collaborate on “immersive in-arena and digital branding and concession items inspired by TikTok trends.” The Maple Leafs and TikTok also committed to further collaborations throughout the season.

Later in the day, Toronto players showcased the new helmets with the TikTok logo, wearing them in their 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

The National Hockey League approved helmet sponsors last year as a way for teams to generate more revenue during the time of coronavirus pandemic. Following the success of helmet sponsorships, the league also decided to add jersey sponsors in the future.

Starting the 2022-23 season, the teams will be allowed to have a sponsor logo on their jerseys in the form of a 3 x 3.5-inch patch. This will make NHL the third major sports league in the United States to allow jersey advertisement alongside the NBA and MLB.

After a long tenure of strict COVID-19-induced health regulations, sports teams located within the Canadian province of Ontario will be allowed to host full capacity crowds in their arenas going forward after being permitted to do so by the provincial government.

Announced by Ontario Sports Minister Lisa MacLeod on Friday, this new regulation will affect the NHL teams of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators as well as the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. This eased ruling has already taken effect.

While the number of attendees permitted at indoor sports events has been increased by the province of Ontario, there are still a number of health guidelines that will be strictly enforced on gamedays. This includes the requirement for all attendees to produce proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to gain access to the facility.

Following this latest ruling, the Vancouver Canucks are the last remaining NHL team that is not permitted to host a full-capacity crowd at home games. Currently, the province of British Columbia only allows for indoor crowds to reach a maximum of 50% capacity.

Veteran forward Alex Galchenyuk has had an eventful last couple of days. The 27-year-old hockey player was first traded by the Ottawa Senators to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, only to be moved again on Monday to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs confirmed trading for Galchenyuk on social media, revealing that forward Egor Korshkov and defenseman David Warsofsky will make their way to Carolina in exchange.

Galchenyuk signed with the Senators in the offseason, inking a one-year, $1.05 million contract with the organization. He played eight games this season, contributing with one goal before being included in the trade that helped Ottawa get Ryan Dzingel from the Canes.

The good news for the Toronto Maple Leafs is that Galchenyuk will be able to help them immediately. He didn’t leave Canada after being traded to the Hurricanes, meaning that he won’t have to go through COVID-19 protocols.

Galchenyuk is expected to provide depth and veteran presence to Toronto as the team looks to steady the ship following two straight losses. The Maple Leafs started the season 8-1.

Alex Galchenyuk was the Montreal Canadiens’ third overall pick in 2012. He spent six years with the franchise before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes ahead of the 2018-19 season. Since then, he has suited up for three more teams.

Galchenyuk’s career stats include 557 NHL appearances in which he scored 136 goals while adding 185 assists for a total of 321 points.
