The Best FIFA Football Awards were held Monday night in Teatro alla Scala in Milano, Italy, as FIFA declared the winners in several categories including Best Coach, Best Men’s Player, Best Woman’s Player, Best Woman’s Coach, Best Men’s and Woman’s Goalkeeper, Puskas Best Goal, and the ideal 11 from the past season. 

Lionel Messi was chosen as the Best Men’s player with a huge majority of 91% of the votes, way ahead of second-placed Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk, who won 4%. Cristiano Ronaldo won only 2% of the votes. 

Liverpool’s Allison Becker was chosen as the Best Goalkeeper, beating fellow Brazilian Ederson, and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. The Hungarian Daniel Zsory took the Puskas Best Goal award, with his stunning bicycle goal against Ferencvaros on 16th of February 2019.  

Jurgen Klopp won the Coaching Award, as he led Liverpool to the Champions League title, and narrowly lost the Premier League title to Manchester City.  

Megan Rapione from Seattle Reign FC won the Best Woman’s award after her fantastic season in which she won her 2nd World Cup title with the USA team. Her national team coach Jill Ellis was named the best Woman’s Coach without any rivals. Sari van Veenendaal took the Best Woman’s Goalkeeper award.

Sorry Lionel Messi fans, but Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the best soccer player in the world. At least, according to FIFA. The second The Best FIFA Football Awards were held in London on Monday, and the organization handed out the awards for the best men’s player, best woman’s player and best coach among others. The winners of the awards were determined by national team captains, coaches, and media representatives votes.

It’s a wonderful accolade. I really want to thank my team-mates. It’s a landmark moment in my career; a moment involving intense emotions.” – said Ronaldo, when asked about his consecutive win. “I’m happy to have won this award tonight, but what I originally wanted was to make a success of my footballing career and I think I’ve achieved that. Obviously, winning trophies, and being one of the players with the most individual awards in history, is a great source of pride. It’s an unforgettable moment in my life and it motivates me to continue performing at the highest level.

Ronaldo faced competition from Lionel Messi and Neymar for the top prize but ended up winning 43.16% of total votes.

Unfortunately, in the competition for best women’s player, the U.S.’ Carli Lloyd won 16.28% of total votes, which placed her in the second spot behind Netherlands’ Lieke Martens with 21.72% of total votes.

In the category for best men’s coach, Zinedine Zidane got the majority of the votes to win the award in front of Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri. Sarina Wiegman took the award in the women’s category.

Gianluigi Buffon got 42.42% of total votes compared to Manuel Neuer’s 32.32% of total votes and won the award in the category for the best goalkeeper.
When it comes to the awards voted by fans, Olivier Giroud got the Puskás Award for the best goal while the Celtic supporters got the Fan Award.

On the even held in London, FIFA announced the finalist for The Best FIFA Football Awards. The winners will be revealed at the ceremony which will also take place in London on 23 October. FIFA introduced the award in 2016 when it cut ties with the France Football ‘s Ballon d’Or.

Last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo was joined by Lionel Messi and Neymar as the finalist for The Best FIFA Men’s Player. With another UEFA Champions League title in his resume alongside winning the Euro 2016, there is no doubt that Ronaldo is the firm favorite to take the award. Another last year’s winner, American Carli Lloyd of the Houston Dash is in the competition for The Best FIFA Women’s Player alongside Venezuela’s Deyna Castellanos and Netherlands’ Lieke Martens.This year, FIFA also decided to increase the number of awards and introduced The Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award with Gianluigi Buffon, Keylor Navas, and Manuel Neuer as finalists.

On the ceremony, the finalists for the FIFA Puskás Award, which is given to the player who scored the most beautiful goal in the past season, were revealed. You can check them all out in the video below and also vote for your favorite one.
