While his New England Patriots were getting beaten by Nick Foles and Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, cornerback Malcolm Butler was unable to help his team. Although it was expected that he will be an important part of the Patriots defense in the game, Butler ended up sitting out the entire game on the bench. The 28-year-old ended up leaving the Patriots in the free agency and joined the Tennessee Titans.

Now, two months later, Butler spoke with Sports Illustrated and decided to share how he felt about not taking a single defensive snap in the most important football game of the year.

I just wanted to go up to [Bill] Belichick or [defensive coordinator] Matt Patricia and say, ‘This is how we’re going to end this?‘” – Butler shared. “I grew up in the Patriots system. I’m a well-mannered guy. I respect my authority. I just couldn’t ask them for something they didn’t want to do. I was close to going up there and saying what I wanted to say to Matt or Belichick, but I just stayed in my lane and did my job. I really wanted to go ask them, but I didn’t.

After the Super Bowl LII, Butler told reporters that the Patriots would have won the game if he was playing. He still thinks that way.

Would we have won if I played? Probably, maybe, I’m not sure.” – he said. “I would say we were short about one or two plays. I’ve seen a couple plays out there I could have made. It was just a coaching decision; it didn’t work out good for me, him or the New England Patriots organization.

Malcolm Butler joined the Patriots in 2014 and won two Super Bowls with the franchise. After his contract expired, he signed a five-year, $61 million deal with the Titans.

Philadelphia Eagles defeated New England Patriots 41-33 in the Super Bowl LII and got their first Vince Lombardi Trophy. It was unexpected, improbable win for the Eagles who came with their backup quarterback to play against arguably the greatest quarterback – coach combo in the history of NFL, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

The Eagles, who were the underdogs during their entire playoff run after their star quarterback Carson Wentz was injured during the regular season, weren’t given much chance against the Patriots. No one believed that Nick Foles, who considered retirement couple of years ago, could put on a performance good enough to beat one of the greatest team’s in league’s history. Still, Foles and the entire Eagles team stepped up to the challenge and with aggressive play managed to stay in front for the most part of the game.

It was 9:22 mark of the fourth quarter and the Patriots finally managed to take their first lead of the game. It was something already seen from this Patriots team. They would take over late in games and managed to come up victorious. Eagles took the lead again with 2:21 left in the game. Tom Brady took the field, and everyone expected him to embark on one of his signature drives, get the ball to the Eagles’ end zone and win his sixth Super Bowl championship.

Instead, Brandon Graham, the defensive end for the Eagles, managed to find a bit of space in the Patriots’ offensive line and knock the ball from Tom Brady and force a fumble. It was Brady’s first fumble in 20 postseason games. It was also the moment that decided the game. Eagles kicked a field goal and had the 8 point advantage with less than a minute left. Brady had one more chance, but tight end Rob Gronkowski didn’t manage to catch a Hail Mary pass from his quarterback and clock run out, making the Eagles Super Bowl champions for the first time.

It was one of the rare times that Brady and Belichick didn’t enjoy in the confetti rain.

One of the burning questions which surrounded the upcoming Super Bowl LII was the condition of New England Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski suffered a concussion in the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and there was even doubt that he will participate in the Super Bowl game. Luckily for the Patriots, Gronkowski has been cleared from concussion protocol on Sunday and will play against the Philadelphia Eagles.

[I] officially got the word today that I was cleared. So it was super nice to hear from the doctors going through the whole process and I’m ready to roll,” – said Gronk. “I’ll be full-speed, taking on hits, blocking, running routes, whatever it might be.

The 28-year old All-Pro tight end returned to practice on Saturday but wasn’t participating in full until Thursday.

Rob Gronkowski was diagnosed with a concussion in the second quarter of the game against the Jags. The helmet of Jacksonville safety Barry Church, who was defending a pass that was coming towards Gronk, made contact, forcing him to leave the game early.

Although the New England Patriots would still be favorites without Gronkowski on the field, having won the Super Bowl last year with him being injured, having their star tight end on the field opens the world of possibilities for the team. He was the Patriots leader in this season in both receptions with 69 and receiving yards with 1,084. He also added 7 touchdowns in the regular season and one in the playoffs.

After the NFC and AFC championship games wrapped up on Sunday, we now have our rivals for Super Bowl LII. New England Patriots came from behind to claim a 24-20 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars while Philadelphia Eagles absolutely destroyed Minnesota Vikings in a 38-7 win.

The Jaguars were in the lead against the Patriots for most of the AFC championship game, entering the fourth quarter with 17-10 lead. Then Tom Brady and Danny Amendola stepped up and lead the Patriots comeback for the franchise’s 10th Super Bowl appearance and eight in Brady-Belichick era. Brady passed for 290 yards and had two touchdown passes, while Amendola had 7 receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns. This will be also the team’s third Super Bowl appearance since 2014. The Patriots won the previous two edging out the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 and the Atlanta Falcons in 2016 season.

In the NFC championship game, the Eagles were once again the underdogs but managed to overcome the Vikings in an impressive fashion. The Vikings opened the game with a touchdown and extra point conversion, but that’s everything they managed to do for the rest of the game. It looks like the thriller game against the New Orleans Saints in the Divisional Round took the best of them and they just didn’t have an answer on the defensive end. The Eagles, on the other hand, did everything right and then some. Their QB Nick Foles, who stepped in after the team’s starting quarterback Carson Wentz was ruled out for the season, had an impressive game, passing for 352 yards and three touchdowns.

New England Patriots are projected as big favorites, but the Philadelphia Eagles were the underdogs for two games in a row and managed to come out victorious. Super Bowl LII will take place at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 4, 2018.
