The Cleveland Guardians are still planning to get AL Cy Young Shane Bieber and right-hander Triston McKenzie back into their rotation before the 2023 MLB season wraps up. This was confirmed to reporters by Terry Francona on Monday.

According to Francona, the Guardians expect Bieber and McKenzie to return by September 20th. If everything goes according to plan, both will have multiple starts in the final two weeks of the regular season.

“Hopefully, they’ll stay on track and come back and pitch for us,” Francona said. “They’ve attacked what they’ve been asked to do, which is the way you want it. The hope is that there aren’t any hiccups.”

Bieber has been out since early July while dealing with elbow inflammation. He started 19 games during the 2023 campaign and has a 5-6 record with a 3.77 ERA and 95 strikeouts.

McKenzie, on the other hand, has been out since mid-June with a sprain in his right elbow. The 26-year-old made two starts this season, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 15 strikeouts.

The return of Bieber and McKenzie will be crucial if the Guardians intend to make a late push to catch the Minnesota Twins at the top of AL Central. Cleveland is currently at 66-72 and 6.0 games behind the Twins.

Bauer was an absolute force on the mound this season and almost untouchable. He struck out 100 batters in 73 innings, posting a ridiculous 1.73 ERA. Bauer won the Cy Young Award decisively, earning 27-first place votes out of 30.

Bieber was actually even more impressive, posting an 8-1 record with a 1.63 ERA. He struck out 122 batters in 77.1 innings. He finished the season either alone at the top or tied for first in the league in victories, strikeouts, and ERA.

Bieber received all 30 first-place votes and is the first pitcher to receive all 30 votes since Clayton Kershaw did it in 2014.

In each of his 12 starts, Bieber struck out at least eight batters. Bauer did the same in five games.

In one game against the Kansas City Royals, Bieber struck out 14 batters, which was a season-high for him.

This year’s edition was held on the banks of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, where the weather gods blessed Progressive Field and the event with perfect 75 degree and sunny weather.

For the seventh consecutive year, the AL recorded a victory over their interleague rivals, beating the NL by a 4-3 final score.

The night was defined by strong pitching performance, as both team’s staffs combined to allow only 7 runs and record 23 strikeouts.

Fittingly, Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Shane Bieber, a late injury replacement on the American League squad, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after a perfect fifth inning in which he recorded strikeouts of Willson Contreras, Ketel Marte, and Ronald Acuña.

Two hitters went yard on the night, with Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon and Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo each recording a long ball.

The exhibition game, which no longer has any bearing on home-field advantage for the World Series, was a relaxed event which was enjoyed by all of the stars that participated.
