There is a reunion happening at Inter Miami. The MLS side confirmed that Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets is set to join the club and play again with former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.

Miami made the announcement via a video posted on social media that featured quotes from notable soccer coaches and players about Busquets.

Busquets reportedly had lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia clubs but wished to play again with Messi and experience MLS. He is expected to sign a deal that will tie him with Inter through 2025.

Sergio Busquets joined Barcelona’s academy in 2005 as a teenager and made his debut for the senior team two years later. He went on to play 722 games for Barca in all competitions, helping the club win 32 trophies in the process.

Busquets was also a regular fixture with Spain, making 143 appearances on the international stage. He was part of the Spanish teams that won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012.

There is a possibility that Busquets and Messi will be joined by another former Barca player in Miami. According to reports, Inter is also looking to sign left-back Jordi Alba this summer. Alba is currently a free agent and also has offers from several European clubs like Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets decided to retire from international football following his nation’s 2022 World Cup exit at the hands of Morocco during the Round of 16.

At 34 years old, Busquets was the last remaining active member of the Spanish squad that won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa – the country’s only World Cup victory to date. Following that victory, Busquets spoke of his ambition to become the first Spanish player to win two World Cups.

“I’d like to announce that after almost 15 years and 143 games, the moment has come for me to say farewell to the national team,” Busquets announced. “It has been an honor to represent my country and take it to the highest level, to be a world and European champion, to be captain, and to have played so many games, with more or less success but always giving everything and bringing my grain of sand so that everything could go as well as possible.”

Busquets decided to step down from La Roja in order to focus on playing at the club level for the remainder of his career. He is one of the three players who missed a penalty as Spain was defeated by Morocco on penalties following a goalless draw.

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has revealed his interest in playing for Inter Miami should his tenure with the La Liga giants come to an end. Busquets’ contract with Barca is up at the end of the current season.

While Barcelona is reportedly open to extending Busquets’ contract with the club, the Blaugranes have stated that they will ultimately do what Busquets feels is best for his future. Currently, no contract extension has been agreed upon between Busquets and the club.

“I know it’s the last year [of my deal with Barca] but I have always said that I have nothing signed with anyone,” Busquets explained. “I would like to have some certainty by February. I have always said I would like to play in the United States, above all in Miami, but from there I have not reached any agreement with any club — in the US or in any other league.”

Aside from Busquets, Inter Miami is targeting an array of top talent from Europe’s elite leagues, including the likes of Lionel Messi, whose contract with PSG will also lapse at the end of the season. Currently, Barcelona is exploring the possibility of luring Messi back to the Camp Nou.

FC Barcelona took a somewhat disappointing 1-1 home on Tuesday against Napoli in the first leg of the Round of 16 Champions League matchup against the Italian side.

After the game, midfielder Sergio Busquets didn’t hold back in criticizing the planning of the team that has led Barcelona to be short on impact players during the second half of the season.

In addition to Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez, who are expected to miss the rest of the season, Barcelona went into the game missing recent signing Martin Braithwaite (who is ineligible to play in the Champions League this season), as well as full-backs Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba, who were suspended for the game.

Barcelona only has 20 first-team players this season, meaning that four of the spots on the bench for last night’s game against Napoli were covered by B-team players.

For the second leg matchup against Napoli, Barcelona will recover Alba and Roberto, but will be without Arturo Vidal and Busquets after being booked on Tuesday.

Busquets made it clear that Barcelona’s sporting directors hold some blame for the shallow squad after the game, saying “We don’t have a deep squad because, unfortunately, that’s how it was planned.”

Barcelona must now hope that they have enough depth to get past Napoli in the second leg and advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.
