United States men’s national team back Sergino Dest suffered a knee injury earlier in April, which will rule him out for an extended period of time. However, it appears this doesn’t affect his chances of joining Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on a permanent basis.

During a chat with reporters on Wednesday, PSV’s head coach Peter Bosz said that both he and the club want Dest, who is currently there on loan from Barcelona, to stay past this summer.

“I would very much like to have him there. It clicked in the way we played. It clicked as a person. It clicked with the player group, “said Bosz. “He also just played well actually all season. Then you want to keep him. The same goes for the club, actually. I think they would also like to keep him there.”

After an underwhelming loan stint with AC Milan last season, Barca sent Sergino Dest to PSV on a loan deal that had an option of making the deal permanent after the end of the 2023-24 campaign. Dest rediscovered his form in the Netherlands, making 37 appearances and scoring two goals alongside seven assists. His good performances helped PSV emerge at the top of the Eredivisie standings and made them favorites to win the league title.

Dest’s season unfortunately ended this past weekend when he suffered an ACL tear. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for nine months.

The U.S. international right-back Sergino Dest reportedly didn’t impress Seria A side AC Milan enough to turn his loan deal into a permanent transfer. According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Italian club decided not to trigger their buy option clause and will send Dest back to Barcelona at the end of the season.

Milan brought Dest in the summer on a season-long loan that included the option to make the transfer permanent for €20 million. However, the 22-year-old player failed to make himself a permanent fixture in manager Stefano Pioli’s starting 11 and hasn’t made a single appearance for the Italian powerhouse since January.

Dest played a total of 14 games for Milan in 2022-23 while making two starts in Seria A. He was last included in the match squad in early March, after which Pioli didn’t even include him on the bench. It is believed that a combination of injuries and lack of effort in training have caused Dest to fall out of favor.

Considering that Dest is also no longer in Barcelona’s plans, he will be looking for a new club in the summer. However, the Catalan giants might find it hard to move him, considering USMNT’s struggles with form.

Barcelona’s poor form so far in 2021-22 will reportedly prompt the La Liga powerhouse to make some additions to their squad during the January transfer window. However, in order to have money to spend on transfers, the Spanish club will have to offload some players and one of them might be USMNT’s star right back Sergino Dest.

According to ESPN, Barcelona will listen to offers for Dest in January and are prepared to let the 21-year-old leave if they receive a proper offer. The sources close to the situation say that the U.S. international is valued at Camp Nou but that the club also views him as one of the players whom they could move the fastest.

If Dest actually becomes available, expect several high-profile clubs to be in play for his signature. The first that comes to mind is Bayern Munich, who already had its sights on the American previously. The Bundesliga giants tried to acquire Dest while he was with Ajax a few years ago, and even made a move for the player this summer but saw their loan offer rejected by Barca.

Sergino Dest emerged as a mainstay for Barcelona on the right side since arriving in 2020. He played 57 games in all competitions while scoring three goals and providing four assists and helping Barca win Copa del Rey last season.

Barca would like to move on from several other players, but that is proving to be quite a challenge. The likes of Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti have been on the transfer list for a while now but the offers are lacking due to their high salaries.

The Catalan club is currently seventh in La Liga and finds itself 16 points behind leaders and their bitter rivals Real Madrid.

U.S. international back Sergino Dest will play at Nou Camp this year. Barcelona’s manager Ronald Koeman confirmed on Wednesday that the La Liga side sealed the deal for Dest and that the 19-year-old defender will play in Spain this season.

Shortly after, Barca announced the deal on social media.

“He’s a young full-back, it’s about having young players for the club’s future,” said Koeman during a press conference. “He has to compete with the other full-backs we have. Despite age, he’s played a lot of games, played in the Champions League. A very useful player.”

Dest will join his compatriot Konrad de la Fuente at Camp Nou, which will greatly benefit the United States men’s national team, according to Koeman.

“It’s good for American football that you have players like Dest, like Konrad here in Barcelona,” he added. “But both players are still young. Sergino last season in Ajax’s first team, in the Champions League, that experience will help the player and also the U.S national team.”

After a breakthrough season with Ajax in 2019/20, Sergino Dest attracted interest from several major European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. And while Bayern was considered the frontrunner for Dest’s signature just a few weeks ago, Barca swooped in at the last minute and convinced the 19-year-old to come to Spain.

Reportedly, Barca will pay around $25 million for Dest, while Ajax will be entitled to additional compensation depending on Dest’s performances.
