]]>Toronto FC still haven’t ruled out the possibility of bringing back Italian forward Sebastian Giovinco. According to a recent report by Toronto Sun, the two sides will meet again at some point this week and test the waters on a possible reunion.
Currently, the only issue that is stopping Giovinco from donning Toronto’s jersey once again is money. It is believed that the 34-year-old will have to be open to a significant pay cut if there is a chance for the move to materialize.
Sebastian Giovinco previously played for Toronto between 2015 and 2018, establishing himself as one of the best players in MLS history. He scored 83 goals in 142 games for the club while helping them win MLS Cup in 2017. Among his individual accolades are four MLS All-Star appearances, three MLS Best XI nods, and MLS MVP Award from 2015.
Giovinco parted ways with Toronto at the end of the 2018 season and joined Al-Hilal for an undisclosed transfer fee. In three seasons with the Saudi Arabia side, he played 83 games and contributed with 16 goals. He left the club after his contract expired in the summer and has been a free agent since.
Toronto already approached Giovinco several months ago, but the talks went nowhere as the MLS side wasn’t ready to meet the player’s contract demands.

“This was an extremely emotional transaction for our club. We’d like to thank Seba for all he did for TFC during his time with the club. He gave our fans many thrilling moments during his four years, especially during our championship season in 2017,” – said Toronto FC President Bill Manning in a statement. “He leaves Toronto as the greatest player in club history. We wish Seba and his family nothing but the best as he begins a new chapter.”
Sebastian Giovinco joined Toronto in 2015 and went on to play 142 regular season games with the club and scored 83 goals in the process. He became team’s all-time leading goal scorer while also holding several club and MLS records. Giovinco made the MLS All-Star selection each year since coming to the league while receiving a number of other honors including MLS MVP Award in 2015.
After his departure from Toronto FC was made official, Sebastian Giovinco decided to explain the circumstances behind his departure via lengthy Instagram post. In this post, Giovinco revealed that he wanted to finish his career in MLS but that the team decided to offer him “unacceptable terms.
“As I have always maintained, I was hoping to renew my contract and finish my playing career in a city that feels like home. … A place my family loves to live and wanted to call home for good,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, this desire of ours has clashed with a change in direction with current TFC management. For the 2 years I have been seeking to extend my contract however management was reluctant. Recently, after refusing to exercise the club option for 2020, I was offered terms that I deemed unacceptable.”
