After missing out on a reunion with Richard Sherman, who chose to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the San Francisco 49ers moved swiftly to pick up cornerback Buster Skrine. The team announced the move on Wednesday, revealing that Skrine had inked a one-year deal.

The 49ers also confirmed that corner Davontae Harris and defensive lineman Maurice Hurst are heading to the injured reserve.

San Francisco has been hit with several injuries in secondary in recent weeks. Besides Harris, they also lost starter Jason Verrett for the season and could be without K’Waun Williams moving forward. Williams injured his calf in a Week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers and is set to miss several weeks recovering.

Skrine should be able to help right away after playing 28 games for the Chicago Bears in the past two seasons. The 32-year-old veteran previously had offers to join the Baltimore Ravens practice squad but decided to hold out for a chance to be part of an active roster in 2021.

Before the Bears, Skrine also played for the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets. He has 151 games in NFL, including 92 as a starter, and has contributed with 573 tackles, 3.5 sacks, nine interceptions, and 85 passes defended.

“When you’re talking about one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time with Tom Brady, of course, you’re going to have some internal discussion,” said Lynch. “And then you hear rumors that hey, he’d like to come home, that kind of thing. So of course Kyle and I have discussions. We’re always into getting better, so you always look at everything, especially a situation like that.

Brady’s homecoming never got to be, as Lynch and Shanahan ended up deciding that already have a franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo.

“We love everything that he brings, and we really believe it’s a long-term answer,” he added. “I would tell you we’re more convinced than ever about who our quarterback is in Jimmy Garoppolo.”

San Francisco 49ers made the Super Bowl last season with Garoppolo, but many people thought that he was also the reason they didn’t win it. The 28-year-old signal-caller put on poor performance, especially late in the game, completing just three passes in the fourth quarter and throwing an interception.

Guard Laken Tomlinson is staying with the San Francisco 49ers. Tomlinson, who joined the 49ers in 2017 from Detroit Lions, signed a three-year, $18 million extension with the team which will keep him in San Francisco through 2021. According to NFL Network, the deal includes $10 million guaranteed.

“Laken is a very talented player who has improved consistently since joining the team one week before last year’s season opener,”- said 49ers general manager John Lynch in a statement. “This offseason, his hard work, and dedication paid off as he continued to progress and performed at a high level. We were confident we could work out a contract extension with Laken and we are fired up to get that done before training camp.“

Laken Tomlinson was taken in the first round of 2015 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. After spending three years with the team, and failing to live up to his expectations, Lions decided to move on from him and traded Tomlinson to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2019 fifth-round draft pick. Despite his poor performances in Detroit, 49ers made Tomlinson their starting left guard, and he ended up playing 15 games in the 2017 season.

49ers were satisfied with what they have seen but didn’t want to exercise the fifth-year option on the player’s contract, which was worth $9.6 million. Instead, they looked to bring him at a lower rate with a long-term extension, which they ended up doing.

NFL issued a four games suspension to San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver Victor Bolden Jr. after the player violated the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Bolden Jr. will be able to return to team’s active roster after Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Chargers scheduled for August 31st.

Victor Bolden Jr. issued a statement following the suspension, saying that he used an unspecified supplement without knowing that it was on the NFL’s list of banned substances.

“As a professional athlete, I take full responsibility for not verifying the ingredients of the supplement,” – said Bolden in a statement. “In the future, I will be much better educated when choosing what to put in my body. It hurts to know that I will not be on the field with my team for the first four games of the season.“

Despite being unable to play at the start of the regular season, the 23-year-old will be allowed to practice with the team and participate in the 49ers’ preseason games.

“Professional athletes must be meticulous in their supplement choices,“- said 46ers’ general manager John Lynch. “We know Victor is disappointed, but we hope this is a reminder to all our players how important it is to make educated decisions on what to put in their bodies.“

San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with guard Jonathan Cooper, the team announced on Tuesday. Cooper, who spent the 2017 season playing for Dallas Cowboys, will compete for a place in the starting line-up, according to 49ers general manager John Lynch.

“Having started 27 games in four NFL seasons, Jonathan brings great experience to the interior of our offensive line,” – said Lynch in a statement. “We look forward to him competing for a starting job at guard, while also bringing a veteran presence to our locker room. Jonathan is a welcome addition to our team.“

The 28-year-old is currently recovering from a knee surgery he underwent in the postseason. It is expected that he will manage to return to full capacity by the June minicamp.

Jonathan Cooper entered 2013 NFL draft as one of the top prospects and a projected top 10 pick. Arizona Cardinals ended selecting him with the seventh overall, making Cooper the highest selected offensive guard since New Orleans Saints took Jim Dombrowski with the sixth overall pick in 1986 NFL Draft.

Cooper’s professional football career, however, didn’t have a good start, since he broke his left fibula in one of the Cardinals’ preseason games. He never returned to his old form after the injury, while getting hit with numerous setbacks during his time with the team. He was traded to the New England Patriots in 2016, but suffered a right injury foot during the training camp and was eventually released. He was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns and ended up starting in three games for the team.
