The San Antonio Spurs’ rookie Victor Wembanyama continues to put the NBA on notice with remarkable performances. Leading the Spurs to a 130-108 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, Wembanyama recorded his first triple-double and needed just 21 minutes to do it.

Wembanyama spent exactly 21:02 minutes on the court and finished the night with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Only Russell Westbrook, who had a triple-double in 20:17 minutes for Oklahoma City Thunder in 2014, complied one faster since the introduction of the shot clock in 1954-55.

Wembanyama is also the youngest player in Spurs’ franchise history to have a triple-double and only the second rookie, alongside Hall of Famer David Robinson, to do it.

“Doing it in a win is everything, of course,” said Wembanyama after the game. “I didn’t know it was the second fastest in NBA history. It matters to me. I’m not the type to talk for nothing. This is the kind of statement we want to make as a team, and this is a type of statement I want to make as a player.”

Victor Wembanyama, considered the most lauded prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James, has been as good as advertised since the Spurs drafted him first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama is currently averaging 19.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while leading the league in blocks with 3.2 per game.

The San Antonio Spurs are taking a cautious approach with star rookie Victor Wembanyama’s ankle injury. According to Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich, Wembanyama has been put on minutes restriction that will cause him to miss back-to-backs in the upcoming weeks.

Wembanyama hurt his ankle after stepping on a ball boy’s foot during warm-ups ahead of last week’s game against the Dallas Mavericks. He ended up missing the Mavs game out of precaution and returned for a pair of games before sitting out Friday’s back-to-back against the Portland Trail Blazers.

“He’s got a minutes restriction and he can’t play back-to-backs for a couple of weeks until they take another picture and check out his foot again,” Popovich clarified in a chat with reporters.

Wembanyama has been as good as advertised in his first season in the NBA. He is averaging 18.8 points and 10.4 in 2023-24, while his 3.2 blocks per game are leading the league.

In Thursday’s 105-118 win over the Blazers, the 19-year-old had 30 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven blocks. The only other rookies to have at least 30 points, five assists, and five blocks in a single game were Spurs’ legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Despite Wembanyama’s exceptional performances, the Spurs have been enduring a disappointing season. They are currently at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 5-26 record.

The San Antonio Spurs suffered their 17th straight loss after getting beaten 93-82 by the Houston Rockets on Monday night. This marked the worst stretch in franchise history, setting a record for most consecutive losses.

The Spurs delivered an encouraging performance on the defensive side of the ball, but that was negated by their shortcomings on the offense. The Spurs were particularly let down by their three-point shooting, making only five threes out of 41 attempts.

“They played a great game,” said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich after the game. “Just, you got to make a shot in the NBA. You can’t shoot 5 for 41 from three. … They did a hell of a job defensively, in that regard. Really proud of them. But just feel badly that it’s hard to know what to do when you’re missing that many shots. It just makes it very, very difficult.”

The Spurs had a lot of reasons for optimism entering the 2023-24 NBA season. They had a young talented squad headlined by star rookie Victor Wembanyama and their fans expected improvement after several disappointing seasons. However, it appears that San Antonio still needs a lot of growth to return to establish itself as a contender in the Western Conference.

“We know that we put in the work for it. We believe in each other, and I wouldn’t want to do it any other group than the group we got,” said forward Keldon Johnson. “I’m excited to get back out there Wednesday and put another great performance team-wise and hopefully get [a] win.”

After starting the season 3-2, the San Antonio Spurs have now dropped to a 3-19 record and find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference. The only team with the worst record in the league is the Detroit Pistons at 2-21.

You can’t blame the San Antonio Spurs for not having a lot of love for Kawhi Leonard. After all, Leonard forced a trade away from their beloved team, and his exit sent the franchise into a painful rebuilding process that is still underway.

Leonard returned to San Antonio on Wednesday night as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers and was expectedly met with loud boos from the home fans. And while Leonard might not have been paying attention to them, Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich wasn’t having any of that.

Late in the second quarter, as the boos grew louder when Leonard stepped on the free throw line, Popovich decided to take the arena mic and address the Spurs fans.

“Excuse me for a second. Can we stop all the booing and let these guys play?” Popovich said. “It’s got no class. It’s not who we are. Knock off the booing.”

Popovich’s plea didn’t actually work as the Spurs fans continued to relentlessly boo Leonard. But the superstar forward himself doesn’t seem to mind them much.

“If I don’t have a Spurs jersey on, they’re probably going to boo me the rest of my career,” Leonard said after the game, which the Clippers won 102-109. “But I mean, it is what it is. Like I said, they’re one of the best fans in the league and they’re very competitive.”

Kawhi Leonard started his career with the Spurs in 2011. He helped the franchise win its most recent championship in 2014 while establishing himself as one of the league’s best players. Leonard’s relationship with the franchise broke down during his injury issues in 2017–18 and he ended up forcing a trade to the Toronto Raptors after the season.

The San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell is being considered day-to-day as he struggles with a groin injury. After experiencing groin tightness during his team’s 121-132 win over the Phoenix Suns, Vassell underwent an MRI which showed that he suffered a left adductor strain.

While being monitored on a daily basis, it appears as if Vassell is unlikely to play in the Spurs’ game against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday afternoon, especially after coach Gregg Popovich admitted that he expected the guard to be out for longer than it now appears. “The groin is one of those things where it can take a while,” Popovich explained.

Averaging 19.4 points and shooting 40.7% from deep, Vassell has proven to be a reliable option for the Spurs this season. He was replaced in the win against the Suns’ by Malaki Branham, whom veteran forward Doug McDermott said was “brilliant”.

There were lots of questions in the preseason on whether San Antonio Spurs’ rookie Victor Wembanyama could meet the high expectations put in front of him. If Friday night’s preseason performance against the Golden State Warriors is any indication, Wembanyama is as good as advertised.

Wembanyama spent 21 minutes on the floor in the 117-122 Spurs win but still managed to put the wealth of his talent on full display. The first-overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft finished the game with 19 points, four rebounds, and five blocks while delivering plenty of highlight moments.

Wembanyama was hitting threes, drawing contact, putting up nifty jumpers, and even got around to block Warriors’ Klay Thompson on the three-point attempt.

With Victor Wembanyama playing the way he played in the preseason, it is safe to say that the San Antonio Spurs have a lot to hope for in 2023-24. The Spurs have been uncharacteristically uncompetitive in recent seasons as they embarked on a rebuild after trading away superstar Kawhi Leonard.

However, with Wembanyama on board and several other exciting young players surrounding him, it wouldn’t be a surprise that the Spurs return to the playoffs after four years. If not that, they will at least be really fun to watch.

The San Antonio Spurs locked their standout guard Devin Vassell to a long-term contract extension. The franchise announced the news on Tuesday.

While the Spurs didn’t reveal the financial side of the agreement, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Vassell is getting a five-year deal worth $146 million. The 2020 first-round selection had one year left on his rookie deal before signing the extension.

Signing Vassell ensures the Spurs will retain one of their brightest talents. They now have all members of their exciting young core: Vassell, Victor Wembanyama, Keldon Johnson, and Keldon Johnson—tied to the franchise for the next several years.

After an underwhelming rookie season that saw him average 5.5 points, Devin Vassell made a big progress in his sophomore year. He averaged 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 2021-22, setting himself for an even bigger leap in 2022-23.

Vassell progressed even more this past season, raising his average to 18.5 points. However, a knee injury limited him to just 32 games. The Spurs obviously believe that Vassell can continue where he left off, which is why they didn’t hesitate much to give him a big-time deal.

The Spurs haven’t made any major roster moves this offseason aside from re-signing Tre Jones and acquiring Lamar Stevens and Cedi Osman in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The San Antonio Spurs have reached a contract buyout with veteran guard/forward Reggie Bullock. The move makes Bullock a free agent and allows him to sign with another team immediately.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Bullock is expected to draw interest from several teams who have playoff and championship ambitions.

Bullock leaves the Spurs without playing a single game for the franchise. He landed with the team as part of the three-team trade that sent forward Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. The 32-year-old had one year left on his contract that would pay him $10.4 million in 2023-24.

The move doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that the Spurs are focusing on young players, and having Bullock on board would cut into their minutes. Also, the franchise has a surplus of guaranteed contracts and needs to trim its roster to 15 players before October 23.

Reggie Bullock spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 7.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 78 games in 2022-23. Bullock previously also played with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Phoenix Suns, the Detroit Pistons, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the New York Knicks.

The San Antonio Spurs are waiving veteran point guard Cameron Payne, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Payne isn’t a great fit for a rebuilding Spurs team and reportedly wants to play a larger role on a contending team.

The Spurs acquired Payne in a trade with the Phoenix Suns back in July. However, San Antonio never actually had an interest in keeping the 29-year-old player around, considering they have plenty of young guards who need minutes.

Payne is expected to clear waivers and attract interest from a number of playoff teams that are looking to get a quality backup point guard. The list of his potential suitors includes the Milwaukee Bucks, the Boston Celtics, and the Miami Heat.

Cameron Payne spent the last four seasons with the Suns, establishing himself as a valuable role player. He played 48 games in 2022-23 as he dealt with injuries and averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 assists. He was also solid in the playoffs, putting together a huge performance in Game 6 of the Western Conference semi-finals against the Denver Nuggets, in which he scored 31 points.

Payne previously also played with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Chicago Bulls, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. His career averages in the NBA include 8.0 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.2 rebounds.

San Antonio Spurs’ legendary head coach Gregg Popovich is extending his stay with the franchise for at least five more years. Aside from his coaching role, Popovich will continue serving as President of Basketball Operations.

The Spurs confirmed the news over the weekend but didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Popovich’s new deal with the Spurs is worth $80 million. This makes him the highest-paid head coach in the NBA again, with a $16 million annual salary. He surpassed Monty Williams, who held the title for a short period of time after signing a six-year, $78.5 million contract with the Detroit Pistons.

Gregg Popovich originally joined the San Antonio Spurs as general manager and vice president of basketball operations in 1994. He appointed himself the team’s head coach early in the 1996–97 season and has since established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the league.

Popovich led the Spurs to five NBA titles and has at least one in each of the past three decades. He won 1,366 regular-season games as a coach, which is the most by any coach in the history of the NBA. Popovich is ranked third in playoff wins with 170.

You can’t blame the San Antonio Spurs for not having a lot of love for Kawhi Leonard. After all, Leonard forced a trade away from their beloved team, and his exit sent the franchise into a painful rebuilding process that is still underway.
