Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert is dealing with an ankle sprain, which caused him to miss Saturday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets. It is unclear whether Gobert’s injury will cause him to miss an extended period.

Gobert sprained his ankle during the 107-112 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday. The three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year said after the game that the injury occurred when he landed on the foot of Bucks’ Brook Lopez.

“Yeah, I sprained my ankle, landed on Brook’s foot. Unfortunate play, but nothing too bad, so I should be good,” said Gobert.

Gobert has played on a high level this season, being one of the major reasons why the Timberwolves are in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Besides being an intimidating defensive presence, Gobert is averaging 13.7 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game.

The good news for the Timberwolves is that they will get a two-day rest, with their next game against the San Antonio Spurs being scheduled for Tuesday. If Gobert’s injury is really just a minor one, he will have enough time to heal and return to court without missing more games. So far in 2023-24, Gobert missed only one game prior to Saturday.

The NBA has had it enough with Draymond Green and his problematic behavior on the court. The league announced that the Golden State Warriors star was handed a five-game suspension for his altercation with Rudy Gobert during a 104-101 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game. Warriors’ Kyle Thompson and Wolves’ Jaden McDaniels got in a scuffle, and Gobert approached alongside several other players with the intention of separating the two. At that point, Green approached Gobert from the back and placed him in a headlock, refusing to let go.

Thompson and McDaniels received two technical fouls and were ejected. Green was also tossed out of the game, being assessed a Flagrant 2 foul.

During his five-game suspension, Green will not get paid, causing him to miss out on $769,970 in salary. Thompson, McDaniels, and Gobert were fined $25,000.

The most recent suspension will be Green’s fifth since he entered the league. He famously got suspended for Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals for hitting LeBron James in the groin. Green’s most recent suspension came during the first-round series against the Sacramento Kings in the 2023 NBA Playoffs, when he was suspended for one game after stepping on the chest of Domantas Sabonis.

Clinching a spot in the NBA playoffs just got a lot harder for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team announced on Monday that their star center Rudy Gobert had been given a one-game suspension and won’t be part of the team for the Play-In tournament game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gobert was suspended for an incident he caused in the regular season finale against the New Orleans Pelicans. The three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year got into a heated exchange with teammate Kyle Anderson during a second quarter timeout and ended up hitting him in the chest. He was sent home after the altercation.

Reportedly, Gobert apologized shortly after the incident, and the incident with Anderson isn’t expected to cause long-term damage to team chemistry. Also, sources close to the team say that even if Gobert wasn’t suspended for the Lakers game, he might not have played due to back issues he has been struggling with lately.

Gobert is playing in his first season with the Timberwolves after coming to Minnesota in a blockbuster trade from the Utah Jazz. He has averaged 13.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in 70 games this season.

The bad news didn’t end here for the Timberwolves, as they also lost power forward Jaden McDaniels after the Pelicans game. McDaniels punched a wall in the tunnel and fractured his hand, which will rule him out for the remainder of the season.

If the Wolves beat the Lakers in the Play-In matchup, they will lock in the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs. If they lose, they will face the winner of the game between the Pelicans and the Oklahoma City Thunder for a chance to get the eighth seed.

The Utah Jazz made a franchise-altering decision late last week, deciding to break up their All-Star duo Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. Gobert will be the one leaving after Utah chose to trade him to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Jazz will receive four first-round picks and rookie Walker Kessler, who was taken 22nd overall in 2022, in exchange for Gobert. The package includes unprotected first-rounders in 2023, 2025, and 2027 as well as a top-5 protected first-round selection in 2029. In addition, the Jazz will also take on Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Leandro Bolmaro to match the outgoing salary.

The decision to send Gobert out of town was reportedly under consideration for a while among the Jazz top executives. The relationship between the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and Mitchell has been strained for a while, and the duo’s performances on the floor didn’t justify keeping them together. Now the Jazz has the flexibility to change things around and perhaps surround Mitchell with players that better suit his style.

However, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mitchell departed the franchise as well. With Boston Celtics’ assistant Will Hardy set to take over as head coach, the Jazz might opt for a full rebuild in hopes of putting together a championship contender down the road. Utah made the playoffs six times in a row but never progressed past the Conference Semifinals.

Rudy Gobert finished the 2021-22 season averaging 15.6 points while leading the league in rebounds with 14.7 rebounds and also adding 2.1 blocks. Gobert is also arguably the best defender in the NBA and a rim-protector that Timbervolwes were desperate for. However, it remains to be seen whether his arrival moves the needle for Minnesota enough to transform them from a team that barely made the playoffs last season to a perennial contender in years to come.

The Utah Jazz announced over the weekend that they signed All-Star center Rudy Gobert to a contract extension. Reportedly, the extension is for five years and will keep Gobert with the organization through the 2025-26 NBA season.

Gobert’s extension is reportedly worth $205 million, making him one of the highest-paid centers in NBA history.

The 28-year-old Frenchman was eligible for a $228 million super-max extension but agreed to a lower number so the Jazz would have room to build a contending roster around him and fellow All-Star Donovan Mitchell.

Rudy Gobert was drafted by Jazz late in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft and went on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the league. He has two NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards and was selected in the NBA All-Defensive First Team in all of the past four years.

Gobert made his first All-Star appearance last season when he posted a career-high 13.5 rebounds per game while adding 15.1 points and 2.0 blocks on average. He followed that up with 14.2 points and 11.4 per game in the postseason but couldn’t stop Utah from being eliminated in the first round by the Denver Nuggets.

“It means that they believe in me,” said Gobert about the extension. “They believe in what we’ve been building over the years with this whole organization, with Coach [Quin Snyder] and all the guys. For me, it’s an incredible blessing. It’s a very motivating feeling to know that we all share the same vision, and we all share this goal for this state and for this franchise.”

After postponing several games in past days due to fear of coronavirus pandemic, the NBA has now decided to suspend the 2019/2020 season altogether “until further notice.” The decision was made after Utah Jazz’s center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus, also known as COVID-19, on Wednesday.

“The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of [Wednesday’s] schedule of games until further notice,” said the league in a statement.  “The NBA will use this hiatus to determine the next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.”

The sports events in Europe started getting postponed or played without the audience since last week due to coronavirus outbreak. NBA, however, kept its usual schedule to begin this week although several measures were discussed, including playing in empty arenas. But following the news that Gobert is positive, the league opted not to take any risks.

The list of NBA players affected by coronavirus might increase in the next couple of days, as teams are awaiting test results. According to sources, Gobert’s teammate Donovan Mitchell also tested positive.

The teams that played against Jazz in recent days are told to self-quarantine, with NBA expected to take further steps once the conference with the board of governors ends.

Other leagues are following NBA’s steps, with NHL and MLS expected to officially suspend their seasons in the next couple of days. MLB, on the other hand, will most likely cancel spring training.

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert earned the most votes for NBA All-Defensive First Team, the league has announced on Wednesday. Gobert, who is also the favorite for Defensive Player of the Year, earned 94 First Team votes. He averaged 13.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game during the regular season, and was the big part of the Jazz’s Western Conference first-round win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Behind Gobert is New Orleans Pelicans’ forward Anthony Davis who earned his first NBA All-Defensive First Team selection. Davis, who has two NBA All-Defensive Second Team selections, earned 73 first-team votes. He had an MVP-worthy campaign after the Pelicans lost DeMarcus Cousins, averaging 28.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.5 steals and led the league in blocks with 2.6 per game.

Rudy Gobert and Anthony Davis are joined on NBA All-Defensive First Team by Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo, Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday and Philadelphia 76ers forward Robert Covington. This is also the first selection for Oladipo, Holiday and Covington.

NBA Defensive Player of the Year finalist, 76ers’ Joel Embiid, didn’t find his place on the NBA All-Defensive First Team. He did, however, made it into NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection. He is joined by Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, Boston Celtics center Al Horford, San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Jimmy Butler.

Utah Jazz announced on Sunday that their center and team’s best player, Rudy Gobert will be out for 4 weeks after suffering an injury in Saturday’s loss to the Miami Heat. Gobert injured his knee in the 3rd quarter, after trying to collect a loose ball and colliding with Heat’s Dion Waiters. MRI test revealed that Gobert has a right tibia contusion.

Commenting on his injury, Gobert accused Waiters of dirty play.

It feels better than it looked on the video,” – said Gobert. “I think it was a dirty play, but no matter what the most important thing is to keep getting better and to win tomorrow.

He just dove right into my knee,” – Gobert continued. “Kind of like the same thing that happened before on my MCL so my knee just went inside and kind of popped inside and back out.

If you ask Waiters, he thinks he didn’t do anything wrong.

I’ve never been a dirty player in my life,” – said Waiters to the reporters on Sunday. “I went for the ball. Tell him to get out of his feelings. And that’s what it is, just like that.

Rudy Gobert has been great for the Jazz in this season, assuming the role of team’s star after Gordon Hayward left Utah to sign for the Boston Celtics. Gobert already has 8 double-doubles in the season and averages 13.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.

The last season was the best one for Gobert since his arrival to the NBA, since he posted career highs in almost all statistical categories. He lead the league in blocks while receiving multiple honors for his performances in 2016-2017 including NBA All-Defensive First Team and All-NBA Second Team.
