Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer is facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines. In a video posted on Instagram, Federer announced that he requires another surgery on his knee that will keep him “out of the game for many months.”

Federer previously missed more than a year of action after having two procedures on his right knee. The 40-year-old legend made an encouraging comeback at Roland Garros and Wimbledon but ended up hurting himself again.

According to Federer, he picked up the injury “during the grass-court season and Wimbledon.” After checking up with the doctors, he was advised to have surgery and decided to do it in order to set himself up for another comeback.

“I want to be healthy. I want to be running around later, as well, again, and I want to give myself a glimmer of hope, also, to return to the tour in some shape or form,” Federer explained in the video. “I am realistic, don’t get me wrong. I know how difficult it is at this age right now to do another surgery and try it.”

Roger Federer is currently tied with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic for most Grand Slam titles in men’s singles with 20. He picked up his most recent title in 2018 when he won the Australian Open.

This year, Federer skipped the Australian Open but made an appearance at the French Open, where he withdrew from the tournament after reaching the round of sixteen. He then took part in Wimbledon, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Hubert Hurkacz.

Roger Federer made a successful return to Grand Slam action on Monday, defeating Denis Istomin in the first round of the 2021 French Open. This marked Federer’s first major tournament appearance after 487 days of hiatus.

Despite the long break, caused by two knee surgeries, Federer demonstrated impressive dominance on the court. He needed only three sets to deal with Istomin (6-2, 6-4, 6-3) while not allowing any breaks and producing 48 winners compared to 20 unforced errors.

Federer, who has one Roland Garros win on his resume, will face Marin Cilic in the second round of the tournament.

The last time Roger Federer played a Grand Slam match was the 2020 Australian Open, where he was eliminated in the semi-finals. Shortly after, Federer underwent a right knee surgery to deal with an issue that was bothering him for quite some time. Following a setback in recovery, he was forced to have another procedure on the same knee and didn’t return to competitive tennis until March 2021.

The 2021 French Open already saw some major names being eliminated from the tournament, including the reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem. He was defeated by unseeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar despite holding a 2-0 lead after two sets.

There was a surprising exit in women’s singles as well, with 2021 Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka deciding to withdraw from competitions. Osaka made the decision after being threatened with sanctions for her refusal to attend press conferences.

After missing the better part of the 2020 tennis season due to two knee surgeries, Roger Federer, arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, is ready to make his comeback next year.

In a recent chat with German’s Schweizer Illustrierte, Federer said that he’s recovering according to plan and is “gradually” returning to his usual training regime.

“I’m on the right track,” said Federer. “I’m gradually coming back but I’m going to take my time and don’t want to put any pressure on myself.”

Federer added that he’s optimistic about making an appearance at the 2021 Australian Open in January, where he would pursue his seventh win on the tournament and 21st career Grand Slam.

“At the moment, it looks like I can make my comeback at the Australian Open in January,” he added.

Roger Federer’s most recent tournament appearance was also the Australian Open, having reached the semifinals in the 2020 edition of the tournament. Federer sustained a knee injury during the tournament, requiring a procedure to deal with the issue. He later suffered a setback in recovery and underwent another surgery that subsequently ruled him out for the year.

Elsewhere in the interview, Federer also shared his opinion about retirement. According to the 39-year-old, he has been thinking about saying goodbye to tennis a lot but isn’t ready to quit just yet.

“I have been thinking about ideas for about five years,” he explained. “But as long as I am having fun and it’s right for all of us, I’ll keep going.”

Roger Federer added yet another trophy to his case with a win in the final of the Miami Open last weekend.

The Swiss tennis player took home the honors after defeating John Isner in the finals of the event on Sunday.

The event was held on a hard court at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida for the first time in the event’s history. One of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis took home the trophy in Miami for the fourth time in his illustrious career.

He swept Isner in straight sets, winning the match 6-1, 6-4.

Federer’s win in the Miami Open was his first finals victory in a Masters 1000 event on the ATP Tour since his triumph in 2017 at the Shanghai Masters over Rafa Nadal.

The win is the second in 2019 for Federer, who was undergoing a bit of a mini-slump. Federer also won at the Dubai Tennis Champions earlier this year.

The 37-year-old is currently ranked fourth in the world in men’s singles tennis.

Roger Federer decided to downplay his chances of winning the last Grand Slam of the season; US Open 2018. Federer, who won the tournament on five previous occasions, singled out his rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as the leading two contenders to lift the trophy.

I’m not the favorite; they are. Rafa and Novak, in my opinion,” – said the 37-year-old. “I’m happy that my level, you know, is there. I just need to figure out my game, get used to different balls. It’s always beautiful when you play with different balls here and there. That’s going to be just something I’m going to be working on. I just gotta come up with a lot of energy, and then hopefully I also have a chance after 10 years to do something special again at the Open.

Roger Federer started the 2018 tennis season in the best way possible, winning the Australian Open and becoming the first man to win twenty Grand Slam titles. After reclaiming the No.1 position on ATP rankings, Federer skipped the second Grand Slam of the season, French Open, in order to focus on Wimbledon. At Wimbledon, Swiss was looking to defend the title he won in 2017 but was stopped by South African Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals.

Before the US Open, Roger Federer finds himself ranked second on ATP rankings. Rafael Nadal is the top-ranked tennis player in the world, while Novak Djokovic is ranked sixth.

Roger Federer continues to set new bars for all other tennis players. The 36-year-old Switzerland native defeated Dutch player Robin Haase in quarterfinals of ABN AMRO World Tournament, which meant that he will become the oldest tennis player in the history of the sport to sit at the top of ATP Rankings. Rafael Nadal holds the No.1 in ATP rankings at the moment, but he will slip on the second spot after the rankings get updated on Monday.

Getting to No. 1 and enjoying it right here at 36, almost 37 years old is an absolute dream come true,” – said Federer about this feat. “I can’t believe it.

The previous record was held by American Andre Agassi, who managed to climb to No.1 in rankings at age of 33.

Last time Roger Federer was at the top was almost five years ago. He will now also extend his record of weeks in which he was the leading male tennis player, which currently stands at 302. Far away on the second spot in weeks at the top is Pete Sampras who managed to last 286 weeks at No. 1 in his career.

Reaching No. 1 is one of, if not the ultimate achievement in our sport,” –said Federer. “Sometimes at the beginning, you get there just because you play so well. Later, you sometimes try to fight it back and you wrest it back from somebody else who deserved to be there, and when you’re older you feel like you have to put maybe double the work in. So this one maybe means the most to me throughout my career.

2018 couldn’t start better for Roger Federer since he previously managed to win 20th Grand Slam title in his career. He managed to retain his title of Australian Open champion, beating Marin Cilic to claim the first Grand Slam of the season.
