U.S. international defender Reggie Cannon has a new team. Cannon joined English club Queens Park Rangers, signing a four-year contract with the EFL Championship side.

Cannon was a free agent after leaving Portuguese side Boavista F.C. in June. The 25-year-old player terminated his contract with Boavista after the club failed to pay his wages.

QPR’s manager Gareth Ainsworth didn’t hide his excitement about the move, saying that Cannon will be a “big asset” for the club.

“We have fought off clubs to get him, and I believe Reggie will become a big asset for us,” Ainsworth told QPR’s official website. “He can play on the right side of midfield, as a wing-back and he can play as a right-sided centre-back, so he is going to add real competition for places which is what we need.”

Reggie Cannon made his professional debut with FC Dallas in 2017 and played four seasons in MLS. He secured a move to Boavista in 2020 in a $3.5 million transfer.

Cannon made his United States men’s national team debut in 2018 and has 28 games and one goal to his name. However, he missed out on being included in the 26-player roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and hasn’t been called up since.

U.S. international Reggie Cannon will continue his soccer development in Europe. FC Dallas announced on Wednesday that Cannon is leaving the club to join the Portuguese Primeira League side Boavista.

While FC Dallas didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal, according to reports, the MLS side received $3 million in exchange for Cannon.

“Dallas has provided me with that springboard and with that opportunity to ultimately go overseas and be challenged,” said Cannon. “I’m really excited for this opportunity and I thank [head coach] Luchi [Gonzalez], the club, the staff, and everyone that’s given me an opportunity to get to the next level.”

Reggie Cannon’s departure from Dallas was coming for some time, as the player attracted strong interest from Europe in recent months. Initially, Belgium’s Anderlecht and Bundesliga side Freiburg were tipped as favorites to land the 22-year-old right back this summer, but Boavista ended up being making a stronger push and was quick to seal the deal once the initial contacts were made.

Canon made his debut for Dallas in 2017 and has since played 75 games for the club in all competitions. He has scored three goals and has four assists to his name.
