FC Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman expressed faith in his team’s ability to perform in the first El Clasico of the season before the Balugranes took on Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday.

“We have to play without fear,” Koeman stated. “We’re confident. We know what we can do and we want to show that. We are at home, we will have our fans behind us and I’m not going into the game with any fear.” The Dutch coach also reiterated that his team has improved their form, winning their last two games, defeating Valencia and Dynamo Kyiv respectively.

Going into the match, Barcelona finds itself in 7th place on the La Liga standings with 15 points from eight games, just two points behind 3rd-placed Real Madrid.

As the first El Clasico to take place since Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona, the Catalan giants will be turning to their rising star Ansu Fati to deliver the goods on matchday. The 18-year-old, who now wears the number 10 jersey at Barca, has scored two goals and bagged one assist in just three games since returning from injury.

Real Madrid reclaimed La Liga title after three years. Los Merengues have been crowned champions on Thursday night thanks to a 2-1 win against Villareal.

Real entered the game needing just one point to secure the trophy, but they went for all three. Karim Benzema scored the first goal of the game in the 29′ minute to give Real the lead and lay the groundwork for title celebration. Benzema then scored again in 77′ minute from a penalty kick and removed all doubts about the best team in Spain in the 2019/20 season.

Villareal tried to start a comeback with Iborra’s goal in the 83′ minute, but that was all they managed to do until the final whistle.

As it turned, Real Madrid would have won the title even if they lost the match against Villareal. This was thanks to the fact that their bitter rivals and closest followers Barcelona surprisingly lost to Osasuna.

“This is one of the best days in my life professionally,” said Real’s head coach Zinedine Zidane. “This is a tremendous feeling because what these players have done is incredible. I am lost for words because I am too emotional.”

This was the 34th title for Real in the history of Spanish domestic competition and their first since 2016/17.

“It has been a strange season after everything that has happened,” said captain Sergio Ramos. “After the confinement we knew that we had to win every match to clinch the title. There was no margin for error.”
