Veteran point guard Rajon Rondo has officially pulled the curtain on his NBA career. Rondo announced his retirement during a recent appearance on All the Smoke podcast.

When asked whether his time in the NBA has come to an end by host Matt Barnes, Rondo didn’t hesitate to confirm.

“Absolutely,” Rondo told Barnes. “Yeah, I’m done. I can’t. I’d rather spend time with my kids.”

“What a time, it was definitely something that I never took for granted when I was in the game,” Rondo, who played 16 seasons in the NBA, added. “I loved every minute of it, and I appreciate the brotherhood that I was able to share and bond and grow with over the years. I’ve learned so much in this game and it’s made me the man who I am today.”

The news doesn’t come as a surprise. Rondo last played in the NBA during the 2021–22 season, suiting up for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 39 games.

Rajon Rondo is best known for his time with the Boston Celtics, where he spent his first eight seasons as a pro. During that time, he helped the Celtics win an NBA Championship in 2008 while also making four All-Star appearances.

The Celtics traded Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks midway through the 2014–15 campaign, which marked his transition into a journeyman veteran. He ended up playing for seven more teams, including two stints with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was part of the Lakers team that won the NBA title in 2020.

The Los Angeles Lakers have added another former player as they put the finishing touches on their roster for the 2021-22 NBA season. According to multiple reports, the Lakers have agreed to a one-year deal, worth $2.6 million, with veteran point guard Rajon Rondo.

Rondo previously played two years with the franchise and helped the Lakers win the NBA title in 2019-20. He joins Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington, and Dwight Howard on the list of ex-Lakers players who re-joined the organization this offseason.

Rondo is expected to provide depth at the point guard position for the Lakers, something general manager Rob Pelinka has been looking for lately. He should take on the playmaking and ball-handling duties when Russell Westbrook rests.

The 35-year-old four-time All-Star left the Lakers after the championship-winning season to sign a two-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks in late 2020. Rondo was supposed to be a veteran leader for the Hawks’ young team, but injuries and questionable fit limited his role with the franchise.

After averaging just 14.9 minutes with the Hawks in the first part of the season, Rondo was traded to the LA Clippers ahead of the trade deadline in exchange for Lou Williams and two second-round picks. His stint with the Clippers got off to a better start but failed to be a factor in the playoffs in the way the franchise hoped.

Earlier in August, Rajon Rondo was traded once again, this time to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the deal that helped the Clippers land Eric Bledsoe. Having surplus options at the position, the Grizzlies ended up agreeing to a buyout with Rondo late last week.

Rondo played 45 games with the Hawks and Clippers last season, averaging 5.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists.

Veteran guard Rajon Rondo is returning to Los Angeles, a place where he won an NBA ring last season. But instead of re-joining the Lakers, Rondo will slip into a Clippers jersey.

The Clippers acquired Rondo in a deal with the Atlanta Hawks that will see three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams heading in the opposite direction. The Hawks will also receive cash consideration and two future second-rounders.

The trade was confirmed on Thursday on the Clippers’ official social media.

Rondo has been going through a rough spell to start 2020-21, spending just 14.9 minutes on the floor and averaging 3.9 points for Atlanta. Still, Clippers head coach Ty Lue believes the 35-year-old guard will prove to be a great addition to his team.

The two know each other well since Lue served as an assistant with the Boston Celtics when Rondo was with the franchise.

“He’s fiery; that’s what we need,” said Lue. “He’s tough. He understands the game. And he respects people as a straight shooter and will tell him the truth. That was my biggest thing in Boston, was just being honest with him and telling him the truth and keeping it real with him.”

Rajon Rondo spent 2020-21 with the LA Lakers, proving to be a crucial part of the team’s championship run. While his regular-season numbers were not impressive, he stepped up in the postseason and averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 assists per game.

Rondo left the Lakers in the offseason, signing a two-year, $15 million contract with the Hawks as a free agent.

If the Los Angeles Lakers want to keep key role player Rajon Rondo for another championship run next season, the organization will have to sign him to a new contract. According to Chris Sheridan of the Basketball News, Rondo is expected to opt-out of his deal with the Lakers this offseason and become a free agent.

Rondo signed a two-year veteran minimum contract with Lakers last year, receiving a player option for 2020/21. The 34-year-old point guard was set to earn $2.69 million next season.

The news about Rondo’s opt-out isn’t unexpected, considering that he raised his stocks in league with some stellar performances for Lakers in this year’s playoffs. This includes 19 points, four assists, and four rebounds outing in the closeout game of the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.

The most likely outcome of Rajon Rondo’s opt-out will be LA Lakers giving him a slight pay-rise and possibly adding another year to his contract. The team believes the title in 2019/20 is just the first in many to come, so they will look to keep key contributors from the bench.

On the other hand, there is always a possibility that another playoff contender in need of a veteran leadership swoops in with an even bigger offer. In that case, don’t be surprised if you see Rondo sporting a different jersey when the 2020/21 tips off.

Since leaving Boston in 2015 after almost nine years with the franchise, Rondo has been a journeyman in the NBA. Besides the Lakers, he suited up for four more different organizations, including Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, and New Orleans Pelicans.

It seems like Los Angeles Lakers’ guard Rajon Rondo can’t catch a break this season. After undergoing surgery in November and missing out 17 games, the 32-year-old now had to have another one after tearing finger ligaments. Both operations were on his shooting hand.

According to the statement issued by the Lakers, Rondo suffered the injury during Christmas game against the Golden State Warriors and underwent surgery on Friday. It is expected that he will miss out four to five weeks.

Rajon Rondo’s injury came at a bad time for the Lakers, who will also be without their main start LeBron James for some time. He suffered a groin injury against the Warriors, and the team is expecting him to miss several games. The Thursday night’s game against the Sacramento Kings showed how troublesome Rondo’s and James’ absence really is since the Los Angeles ended up losing the game 117-116 with their young stars Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram failing to step up when the match was at the line.

When healthy, Rajon Rondo was a valuable member of the Los Angeles Lakers team this season. He played a total of 14 games, averaging 8.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Just when Los Angeles Lakers started figuring things out, they face an unfortunate setback. Lakers’ veteran point guard Rajon Rondo broke his hand during Wednesday night’s 126-117 win over the Portland Trail Blazers and will reportedly be out of action for a few weeks.

Lakers’ head coach Luke Walton told reporters after the game that he believes Rondo suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when he went for a steal against Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic.

He hit his hand on the floor when he went to steal that ball,” – said Walton. “They [the medical staff] are getting all the details. I just know he will be out for a few weeks.

Rondo, on the other hand, didn’t want to give further info about his injury.

I’m not talking about it,” – he said.

According to the sources close to Lakers organization, Rondo will see a specialist on Thursday in order to determine whether he needs to undergo a surgery or not. The team expects the 32-year-old to return to court in three to five weeks.

Rajon Rondo joined Los Angeles Lakers on a one-year, $9 million deal in the summer, with the organization hoping that he would be able to provide mentorship to their talented point guard Lonzo Ball. Rondo played 11 games this season and currently averages 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Not many people thought that Rajon Rondo will have a major impact in New Orleans. He proved them all wrong with an amazing performance for the Pelicans in a 128-113 win against the Brooklyn Nets. Rondo ended the game with 25 assists and became the 7th player in the NBA history to do so. He has managed to reach the number with spending just 30 minutes in the game. Rondo broke the franchise record, previously held by Chris Paul with 21 assists. The Pelicans also had 40 assists in total, combined for 48 field goals.

The No. 1 thing is we got the win. And then me, personally, I love passing the ball,” – said Rondo after the game. “I’ve been blessed to play with a lot of great players, and what I take pride in is making those guys’ jobs easier.

He now joins the likes of Jason Kidd, John Stockton, Isiah Thomas, Scott Skiles, Kevin Johnson and Nate McMillan. Kidd was the last player to achieve this feat in 1996.

It’s definitely an honor to be mentioned with those guys, especially with passing the ball, which I take pride in,” – Rondo added. “But I couldn’t have done it without my teammates making shots, so I’ve got to give those guys the credit.

Rondo’s passing skills helped his teammates clinch the third straight win, which brought the New Orleans Pelicans on the verge of the Western Conference playoff spot. Anthony Davis contributed with 33 points and 11 rebounds while DeMarcus Cousins had 27 points to go with 14 rebounds. Jrue Holiday added 23 points, while E’Twaun Moore had 20.

After being waived by the Chicago Bulls in the offseason, the 31-year-old Rondo joined the Pelicans on a one year deal, worth $3.3 million. After missing the beginning of the season due to an injury, Rondo became a regular starter for the team and already started to make his mark on the Pelicans’ game.
