Despite financial hardship in recent months, La Liga giants Barcelona managed to have a busy January transfer window. However, their most prominent piece of business came after the window closed with the signing of Gabon star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang’s arrival was unveiled on Wednesday on Barca’s official social media. The club revealed that the 32-year-old player arrived on a free transfer and signed a deal until 2025. However, the two sides will have an option to mutually part ways in the summer of 2023.

Aubameyang surprisingly became a free agent earlier in the week after agreeing to an early contract termination with Arsenal. The Premier League powerhouse opted to move on from the veteran striker after being unable to find a taker for his hefty salary that is believed to be in the range of $340K per week.

Once considered Arsenal’s main star, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found himself on the exit door after clashing with manager Mikel Arteta. Aubameyang reportedly had several disciplinary missteps, after which Arteta decided to fine the player and leave him on the bench several times. This caused the relationship between the two to deteriorate until it became unfixable.

While Arsenal felt they don’t need Aubameyang anymore, Barca will undoubtedly be happy to have him. The club has been dealing with a lack of firepower up front, and Aubameyang, despite all of his flaws, should take care of that problem.

Aubameyang spent five and a half seasons in London, scoring 92 goals in 163 games. He also helped Arsenal win FA Cup in 2019-20.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. After he was left out of the team for Premier League’s clash against Southampton over the weekend, Aubameyang has now also lost his captaincy.

The London team confirmed the news on their official website on Wednesday, issuing a statement in which they said that Aubameyang was stripped of his captaincy due to a “disciplinary breach last week.” The 32-year-old will also miss the upcoming match against West Ham United for the same reason.

While the Premier League club didn’t share further details about the “breach”, the reports say Aubameyang was punished after returning late from a “sanctioned holiday.”

According to The Athletic, the player was allowed to go and visit his sick mother last week. He was told to return on Wednesday night, but instead, Aubameyang returned on Thursday morning. This didn’t sit well with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who then decided the Gabon international isn’t suited for wearing the captain’s armband anymore.

This isn’t the first time Aubameyang clashes with Arteta over punctuality. He was left out for the match against Tottenham last season for arriving late to a team meeting.

Besides having troubles off the field, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has struggled when on the field in the past two seasons. In 14 games he played in Premier League in 2021-22, Aubameyang managed to score only four goals. He had 10 goals in 29 games in 2020-21.

Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang recently signed an extension with Arsenal, which will keep him with the franchise until the summer of 2023. But, according to the 31-year-old striker, the Premier League side faces several competitors for his signature.

Speaking with Canal Football Club, Aubameyang admitted that he had a number of other suitors, including Catalan giants Barcelona.

“There were several offers, notably from Barca, but also other clubs,” said Aubameyang.

However, the vision of Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta and the affection he receives from the club made him commit to staying.

“My priority was to stay for two reasons: the first is the coach, Mikel Arteta, because we spoke a fair amount during the ‘lockdown’ … he convinced me, notably in terms of the project,” he added. “Of course, secondly, is the love that I receive from the fans and people at the club.”

Since arriving at Arsenal in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerged as the club’s best player. He scored impressive 72 goals in 112 games, while also expressing leadership skills that got him the captain armband since 2019.

Backed by a new contract, Aubameyang is enjoying a great start of the new season, scoring two goals with one assist in three games.

Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will stay loyal to Arsenal. According to several media reports, Aubameyang agreed to a new three-year extension that will make him one of the club’s highest-paid players.

Reportedly, the negotiations between Aubameyang and Arsenal intensified in recent days, and the two sides managed to agree to terms which will see the 31-year-old striker earn around $330,000 per week. The contract also has several bonuses and incentives regarding the club’s success as well as the player’s individual performances.

Aubameyang only had one year left on his deal before agreeing to an extension and was willing to consider his options with several high-profile clubs like Barcelona being interested in his services.

Since joining Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in 2018, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerged as arguably the club’s most important player. He led the team in scoring in each of the previous two years while winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2018/19. Aubameyang played a total of 109 matches in Arsenal jersey and scored impressive 70 goals.

Locking Aubameyang to a new contract represents a second major move for Arsenal in recent days, as the club previously agreed to terms with Brazilian winger Willian. The club is also looking to make several more additions in order to return to Premier League title contention under new manager Mikel Arteta.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the talented attacker who has been a bright spot in a rough patch for Arsenal over the past couple of seasons, has received some controversial advice from the president of his native country’s football association.

Pierre Alain Mounguengui, the head of Gabon’s football association, said in an interview with ESPN that he believes that his country’s biggest star should aim for a club with loftier goals.

Mounguengui stated, “I don’t want to say that Arsenal aren’t ambitious, but Arsenal don’t have ambitions as high as some other clubs as far as Europe is concerned.” He went on to add, “If Pierre could secure a contract with a more ambitious club, he’d definitely find his place there.”

The Gunners have disappointed fans over the past two seasons, wondering if Aubameyang might leave for greener pastures. Arsenal finished in 5th place in the league last season without any trophies, and then were shockingly eliminated by Olympiacos in the first knockout round of this year’s Europa League.

Aubameyang, who turns 31-years-old this summer, has scored 49 goals in 75 games with the Gunners since joining the team in 2018 from Borussia Dortmund.

It remains to be seen if the Gabonese star will heed Mounguengui’s advice or keep trying his luck in North London.
