Novak Djokovic won the US Open men’s singles titles on Sunday after defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York City. This is the Serbian’s 24th Grand Slam title, seeing him surpass Serena Williams for most Grand Slam victories in the Open Era. While Margaret Court also won 24 titles, 13 of them came before professionals were admitted to Grand Slam tournaments.

“To make history [in] this sport is just something truly remarkable and special, obviously, in every possible way, in every possible meaning of the word,” Djokovic claimed after his win. “It’s hard to describe the word.”

Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic’s coach, called the 36-year-old player a “genius” before explaining that he is a one-of-a-kind player who is unique compared to others on the tour. This win means that Djokovic has now one exactly one in every third major that he has appeared in, with 24 titles in 72 major appearances to be exact.

Novak Djokovic is back at the US Open after missing last year’s tournament. The former ATP world number one marked his return to the final grand slam of the year with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 Alexandre Muller of France on Monday night.

“Well, I knew it was going to be a late night for me, late start of the match,” Djokovic explained after the win, acknowledging that he had to wait for the conclusion of Coco Gauff’s win over Laura Siegemund before he could take to the court. “Nevertheless, I mean, I was excited to go out on the court. I didn’t care if I started after midnight because I was looking forward to this moment for a few years, to be out on the biggest stadium in our sport, the loudest stadium in our sport, playing the night session.”

Currently the 2nd seed behind reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic is set to return to the summit of the ATP world rankings following Monday’s win. While the 20-year-old Alcaraz is the reigning US Open champion, Djokovic has won the US Open on three separate occasions, most recently in 2018.

Novak Djokovic won’t be part of this year’s draw at Indian Wells. Djokovic, who was previously expected to make a run for his sixth title at the BNP Paribas Open in 2021, decided to withdraw from the tournament.

The news was officially confirmed by Indian Wells on Wednesday.

“We are disappointed that Novak will not be able to join us at the BNP Paribas Open this fall,” tournament director Tommy Haas said in a statement.

Djokovic later made the announcement of his own on Twitter, calling Indian Wells his “favorite place to go” and adding that he hopes he’ll return to the tournament in 2022.

The 2021 Indian Wells is scheduled between October 4th and October 17th after being moved from its usual March starting date. Austrian Dominic Thiem is the reigning champion, having won the tournament in 2019. The 2020 edition was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.

Novak Djokovic is yet to play in the official tennis match since losing to Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 US Open Finals. The loss prevented Djokovic from achieving Calendar-year Grand Slam, considering he previously won the three other major tournaments in 2021: the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. He also remains in a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for most career Grand Slams with 20.

Daniil Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open finals to capture his first career Grand Slam. Medvedev got the win in a surprisingly dominant fashion, needing only three sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4) to outlast the world’s No. 1 male tennis player.

Djokovic entered the match with a historic achievement on the line. If he were to win, the 34-year-old Serbian would become the first man since 1969 and Rod Laver to complete calendar Grand Slam, having previously won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. He would also capture record 21st career Grand Slam, breaking a tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

But while Djokovic thrived under pressure many times in his career before, it seems that he broke down under the weight of expectations on Sunday. Uncharacteristic for him, he missed clean shots, made unforced errors, and struggled with Medvedev’s serve even though Russian double-faulted more times than once.

Medvedev’s determination and overall great performance also played a big part in Djokovic’s downfall. The 25-year-old star chased down seemingly lost balls, dominated the baseline, used groundstrokes to perfection, and broke through serving troubles multiple times.

Medvedev also showed mental toughness that allowed him to stick to his game even when it seemed Djokovic was on the verge of a comeback. After racing to a 4-0 lead and then 5-1 lead in the third set, Medvedev saw Djokovic crawling back to 5-4 while denying him a championship point. But he wasn’t about to be denied for the second time, comfortably taking the next game and collapsing to the ground of Arthur Ashe Stadium overwhelmed with excitement.

ATP world number one Novak Djokovic booked his place in the US Open semi-final, defeating Italian rising star Matteo Berrettini in their quarterfinal clash. The match, which began on Wednesday night and resumed on Thursday morning, ended in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win for the 20-time Grand Slam victor.

The US Open has proven to be a difficult hunting ground for Djokovic this year, with the three-time winner dropping his first set in each of the past three matches. Despite a difficult start to the game, the Serbian star made a strong comeback to win the next three sets in a relatively comfortable fashion.

Impressed by his strong comeback, Djokovic referred to it as “The best three sets I’ve played in the tournament, for sure.” As a result, Djokovic now holds a 26-0 record in all Grand Slam competitions this year.

Currently, Djokovic is in the running to complete the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969. Should he achieve this feat, he will also break the record for the most Grand Slam championships in men’s tennis history, earning his 21st title.

Up next for Djokovic is a semi-final clash on Friday against the 4th seeded Alexander Zverev.

World’s No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic is advocating for some major changes in tennis. Speaking with reporters at French Open over the weekend, Djokovic argued that line judges in tennis should be made obsolete in favor of technology.

According to Djokovic, having technology instead of judges would improve the sport.

“The technology is so advanced right now, there is absolutely no reason why you should keep line umpires on the court. That’s my opinion,” said Djokovic, who advanced to fourth-round of 2020 the tournament with an easy 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Elahi Galán on Saturday. “Of course, I understand technology is expensive, so it’s an economic issue and a question mark. But I feel like we are all moving towards that, and sooner or later there is no reason to keep line umpires.”

The majority of the tournaments rely on technology, known as Hawk-Eye, to make close calls but only if they are challenged by a player. In all other cases, it is the line judge that makes the call. Recently, several events experimented with using Hawk-Eye almost exclusively, but this isn’t expected to become a norm.

On the other side, tournaments that take place on clay, which includes the French Open, don’t use technology at all.

“I really don’t see a reason why every single tournament in this world, in this technologically advanced era, would not have what we had during the Cincinnati/New York tournaments,” Djokovic added.

It isn’t surprising that, out of all people, Novak Djokovic is the one asking to get rid of line judges. During the 2020 US Open, Djokovic slammed the ball in frustration towards the back end of the court and hit one line judge in the throat. This caused him to be defaulted from the tournament and stopped him from winning an easy Grand Slam title with the majority of his rivals missing the event.

Novak Djokovic’s bid to win his 18th Grand Slam title ended in a bizarre fashion. Djokovic exited the 2020 US Open via default after accidentally hitting a line judge with a tennis ball.

The incident happened in the first set of Djokovic’s fourth-round match on Sunday against Pablo Carreno Busta. After losing a point and falling behind 6-5, the 33-year-old Serbian slammed the ball behind him without looking where he was aiming.

The ball, unfortunately, hit the line judge in the throat, causing the woman to collapse.

After discussing the incident with Djokovic for around 10 minutes, the decision was made to default the current No.1 male tennis player in the world from the tournament. He then shook hands with his opponent and left the court without speaking with journalists.

Djokovic later addressed the event on social media, saying he was sorry for his behavior.

“I need to go back within and work on my disappointment and turn this all into a lesson for my growth and evolution as a player and human being,” Djokovic wrote on Instagram. “I apologize to the US Open tournament and everyone associated for my behavior.”

Novak Djokovic was the overwhelming favorite to win this year’s US Open, entering the tournament with a 26-0 record in 2020. Djokovic was also the only one of the tennis’ “Big 3” present at the tournament, considering Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal decided not to take part in the event.

Djokovic previously won five out of seven Grand Slam Tournaments and needs only two to tie Federer’s record 20 titles.

With Djokovic out, the US Open will now get a first-time tournament winner, considering none of the remaining players have previously gone all the way at Flushing Meadows. The last time this happened was in 2014 when Marin Cilic won the tournament.

Number one tennis player Novak Djokovic is considering skipping the US Open if it ends up happening.

While speaking to Serbia’s state broadcaster RTS, the Serbian said that the restrictions that would take place at the Grand Slam tournament in New York due to the coronavirus would be too “extreme” and not “sustainable.” Reportedly, this includes a 14-day quarantine, restricted access to courts, and limited availability to travel around New York.

It’s not just the three-time US Open champion that feels this way. “Most of the players I have talked to were quite negative on whether they would go there,” Djokovic said. “For me currently, as things stand, most probably the season will continue on play at the beginning of September.”

Novak Djokovic is expected to return to competitive tennis at the French Open where he would compete for this second title and 18th Grand Slam win. The tournament usually takes place in late May and it has been postponed to September.

The No.1 ranked tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, won’t have a chance to defend his US Open title after all. Djokovic retired from the fourth round match against Stan Wawrinka and was effectively eliminated out of the tournament.

Djokovic lost the first two sets with results 6-4 and 7-5 and was trailing 2-1 in the third. At that moment he walked towards the umpire and told him he couldn’t continue the match due to a pain in his left shoulder.

Djokovic’s exit from the court ended up being followed by loud boos from the crowd, who felt they were robbed from watching a hugely interesting matchup.

“I’m sorry for the crowd. Obviously, they came to see a full match and just wasn’t to be,” – said Djokovic said at the post-game conference. “I mean, a lot of people didn’t know what’s happening, so you cannot blame them.”

The shoulder issues Novak Djokovic experienced aren’t new, as he was battling with the same injury during the second-round match. Although it seemed as though things got better in recent days, the injury got the best out of the 32-year-old and robbed him of the chance to defend the title he won in 2018.

Djokovic’s injury also means that we won’t get to see a potential re-match between him and Roger Federer. If both tennis players would have won their respective matches, they were set to meet in the semi-finals.

Now Wawrinka will try to get in Federer’s way, but he will have to beat Daniil Medvedev to get there. Federer, on the other side, faces Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic is your new US Open champion. Djokovic defeated Argentinian Juan Martín del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Sunday night in US Open 2018 final and got his Grand Slam titles count to 14. This is also the 31-year-old’s second consecutive Grand Slam after he won Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Although the scoreline suggests that Novak Djokovic had an easy task in defeating Juan Martín del Potro, the truth was a bit different. Djokovic did manage to take first set comfortably, but then faced a real challenge in the second set.

Del Potro was up 4-3 in the second set and was on the verge of winning a break point in the eighth gem. Argentinian had three break point chances in this epic 20-minute gem, but Djokovic ended up taking it home. This led us to a tie-break, where Del Potro was once again ahead, serving for 1-4. Djokovic denied him that as well, and won the second set with incredible determination.

After this soul-crushing second set, Juan Martín del Potro tried to fight back in the third as well, but he just couldn’t find inspiration after all the chances he ended up missing.

I was playing almost at the limit, all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn’t make it, because Novak [was] there every time.”– said Del Potro after the game and described the match in the best was possible.

This win represents another validation of triumphant return of Novak Djokovic. Djokovic struggled with an elbow injury in the second part of the 2017 season and didn’t look like himself on the tennis court. He decided to undergo elbow surgery in January 2018, returning to professional tennis in March. Since then he won two Grand Slams and Cincinnati Masters and showed that he is one of the best tennis players in the world once again.

There was always part of me that imagined and believed and hoped that I can get back [to] the desired level of tennis very soon,” – said Djokovic about his return. “But at the same time, life showed me that it takes time for good things, it takes time to really build them, for things to fall into place, so you can center yourself, balance yourself and thrive. The last two months have been terrific.”
