ATP world number one Novak Djokovic booked his place in the US Open semi-final, defeating Italian rising star Matteo Berrettini in their quarterfinal clash. The match, which began on Wednesday night and resumed on Thursday morning, ended in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win for the 20-time Grand Slam victor.
The US Open has proven to be a difficult hunting ground for Djokovic this year, with the three-time winner dropping his first set in each of the past three matches. Despite a difficult start to the game, the Serbian star made a strong comeback to win the next three sets in a relatively comfortable fashion.
Impressed by his strong comeback, Djokovic referred to it as “The best three sets I’ve played in the tournament, for sure.” As a result, Djokovic now holds a 26-0 record in all Grand Slam competitions this year.
Currently, Djokovic is in the running to complete the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969. Should he achieve this feat, he will also break the record for the most Grand Slam championships in men’s tennis history, earning his 21st title.
Up next for Djokovic is a semi-final clash on Friday against the 4th seeded Alexander Zverev.
