Quarterback Nick Foles signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday—a move that will once again see him work with coach Frank Reich. While the team refused to disclose the terms of the contract, sources revealed that Foles had signed a two-year deal with the team.

Foles previously worked under Reick in 2017, when Reich served as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles team that went on to win that season’s Super Bowl championship.

According to reports, the Eagles were eager to re-sign Foles before he concluded his deal with the Colts. After considering Foles, the Eagles opted to remain with their current quarterback lineup, particularly as talk of the potential departure of Gardner Minshew from the team was dismissed.

In a move corresponding to Foles’ arrival, the Colts decided to release quarterback James Morgan from his contract.

Set to play backup to starting quarterback James Morgan, Foles faces competition from 2021 sixth-round draft pick Sam Ehlinger and undrafted free agent Jack Coan.

Prior to signing with the Colts, Foles was recently made a free agent after being released by the Chicago Bears on May 1. This move was expected after the Bears signed free agent quarterback Trevor Siemian.

The Chicago Bears have parted ways with veteran quarterback Nick Foles. The team released Foles over the weekend after unsuccessfully trying to trade the player since the last offseason.

According to Foles’ agent Justin Schulman, both parties agreed upon the move to allow Foles to find a new team.

“Ryan Poles (Bears general manager) did the classy thing, and Nick appreciates it,” said Schulman.

Foles arrived in Chicago ahead of the 2020 NFL season as a veteran who could challenge starting QB Mitch Trubisky. The Super Bowl LII MVP did exactly that, taking Trubisky’s job midway through the campaign. However, this didn’t exactly translate to wins for the Bears as they were 2-5 in Foles’ seven starts under center.

To start the 2021 season, the Bears revamped their QB room. Trubisky was gone, in were the rookie Justin Fields and veteran Andy Dalton. Foles was demoted to third-string QB and only played in Week 16 after Fields and Dalton both went down with injuries. The 33-year-old player led the Bears to a 25–24 win over the Seattle Seahawks, throwing for 250 yards and a touchdown.

It is unclear what kind of market Nick Foles will have now that he’s a free agent. It wouldn’t be surprising if some team jumped on the chance to add him as a safety blanket, although it is hard to see him getting consideration for a starting job anytime soon.

Foles built his resume as a super backup, stepping in for injured Carson Wentz towards the end of the 2017 season and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl win. He also played for the Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. His best regular season came in 2013 when he threw for 2,891 yards and 27 touchdowns in 10 starts.

When Chicago Bears traded for veteran quarterback Nick Foles, most people thought that fourth-round pick was a steep price to pay to Jacksonville Jaguars. But, as it turns out, without giving a fourth-rounder, Bears wouldn’t have their man.

The Athletic’s Dan Pompei recently reported that Bears were not the only team that was in the race for Foles. According to Pompei, Jags didn’t want to trade the 2017’s Super Bowl MVP this season, wanting to give him one more chance after an injury-plagued 2019. However, they surprisingly found out that there were a number of teams willing to give up assets to acquire him.

Reportedly, there were several other NFL teams who were in the run for Foles this offseason, looking to acquire a reliable signal-caller. Among the most serious contenders were Indianapolis Colts, but they ended up deciding that a fourth-rounder would be too much to give up considering Foles’ massive contract. Colts ended up signing Phillip Rivers instead.

Chicago Bears didn’t have those concerns in part for Nick Foles’ decision to reconstruct his deal. Foles agreed to make the two remaining years of his four-year, $88 million contract into voidable years and basically use 2020 as a prove-it season.

Bears previously made it clear that Foles will get to compete for the starting spot in the offseason with their 2017’s No.2 pick Mitchell Trubisky.

Philadelphia Eagles won’t place a franchise tag on their quarterback Nick Foles allowing him to become a free agent in March. This was confirmed on Wednesday by Eagles’ general manager Howie Roseman at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

“We’re going to let Nick Foles be a free agent,” – said Roseman. “He deserves an opportunity to lead a team.”

Following the end of 2018 season, Foles opted out of his contract by paying Philadelphia Eagles $2 million. Many thought that Philadelphia will choose to franchise tag the 30-year-old in order to get back some assets for him via trade. Although Eagles choose the other path, they will still receive a compensatory draft pick when the player signs with another organization.

During his time in Philadelphia, Nick Foles established himself as a “QB super sub,” as he stepped in after starter Carson Wentz suffered an injury in both 2017 and 2018. In 2017, he led the Eagles to an improbable Super Bowl win, winning Super Bowl MVP honors as well, while helping the team to reach the playoffs in 2018 and get one postseason win. Despite all of this, Philadelphia decided to stick with Wentz as their quarterback of the future and let Foles walk away.

Nick Foles’ next destination remains unknown but it is believed that Jacksonville Jaguars are the most interested party. Denver Broncos were also in the mix, but they decided to go on a different route and trade for Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco.

After the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback Carson Wentz went down with an injury, the team wasn’t given much chance to make a deep playoff run, while the Super Bowl appearance seemed like a distant dream. The major reason for that was Wentz’s backup Nick Foles, who struggled with production after stepping up in as his replacement. But playoff time came and Foles delivered, performing above everyone’s expectations and ultimately winning the Eagles a Super Bowl, and being named Super Bowl MVP.

Philadelphia Eagles managed to win their first Super Bowl in history on February 4 and they are entitled to celebrate as much as they can. But after the euphoria wears off, the team’s front office has to make a big decision: whether to keep Nick Foles or trade him.

Trading Foles might seem tempting. His value was never higher and there are plenty of teams in NFL who need a starting quarterback. Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, and New York Jets to name a few. They would all be happy to give up a high draft pick to snatch Foles and make him their starting quarterback. All of them will call Eagles’ GM Howie Roseman and ask for a price. Roseman’s answer should be no, and here is why.

Carson Wentz will need nine months to rehabilitate at best but 12 months is a real option. This means he is about to miss the opening game of 2018 NFL season at best, but it is more likely that he will have to sit out at least until week five. Even when he comes back, there is no guarantee he will be at his MVP candidate form immediately. Keeping Foles will give Eagles a competent quarterback to carry the load until Wentz fully heals. They won’t have to rush Wentz to come back prematurely in order to keep winning. Foles proved that he can do that with this team by throwing for almost 1,000 yards in his three playoff games.

Eagles currently have the best quarterback situation in the league and should keep it that way. There is no need to change the winning combination. After Foles’ contract expires in 2019, it will be up to him to decide whether he wants to stay as a backup or he wishes to pursue a starting quarterback position. But the Eagles are in control now and if they want the best for their franchise, they’ll want Foles as the part of their team.
