The NFL announced on Monday that its 2025 NFL Draft will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the home of the Packers.

The league previously held drafts in New York City between 1965 and 2014 but decided to shake things in recent years. The 2023 NFL Draft was held in Kansas City, Missouri, while the 2024 NFL Draft is set to be hosted in Detroit, Michigan.

“With the help of numerous local partners on the ground, our prospects and fans will be treated to an incredible week-long experience that shows off the city of Green Bay and the state of Wisconsin,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Green Bay will be the smallest city to host the draft in the history of the NFL, with a population of 106,095, according to the most recent data. For comparison, more than 300,000 people attended the 2023 NFL Draft festivities.

The Packers tried to get the hosting of the draft for quite some time and were in the running for 2024 before Detroit was selected. This is likely the only major event that Green Bay can host, as the city’s infrastructure is considered unsuitable for Super Bowl despite having arguably the most legendary stadium in NFL Lambeau Field.

“The Packers have a rich and proud history that goes back to the early days of the NFL and are the only community-owned team,” said Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy. “That connection to our league’s heritage combined with the great passion Packers fans will bring will make the Draft a memorable event for those in attendance and NFL fans watching around the world.”

The Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft on Thursday night, making Young the number one overall pick on the night.

Panthers owner David Tepper stated that he believes that selecting Young could make all the difference as his franchise chases down the first Super Bowl victory in its history.

“When we went through the process with these quarterbacks, we asked ourselves, ‘Which one of these guys will be a guy that can take us?'” Tepper revealed later at a news conference during which he never sat down. “Not to talk about all the different guys, but we thought this guy had the highest probability of winning Super Bowls.”

During his time at Alabama, Young impressed with his skill as a quarterback despite his lower-than-average height of 6-2 ½ and 204 pounds for the position. The 21-year-old player is the winner of the 2021 Heisman Trophy.

Cincinnati Bengals were the first one the clock when the 2020 NFL Draft officially started on Thursday night, and it’s safe to say that there were no surprises when they announced their pick. Bengals took LSU’s quarterback Joe Burrow first overall and officially kicked off a new era for their franchise.

Burrow joins Bengals after arguably the most impressive season by a college QB in the history of the game. In 2019, he led LSU to a national championship title while winning a Heisman Trophy and completing impressive 76.3% of his passes for 5,671 yards and NCAA record 60 touchdowns.

Burrow is now expected to take over the troubled Cincinnati Bengals franchise and transform it into a winning organization. Bengals have missed the playoffs for the past four years while their last postseason win came three decades ago.

“You’ve led every single team you’ve ever played for to a championship, and that expectation does not change now that you’re a Bengal, and I’m looking forward to going through that process with you,” Bengals’ head coach Zac Taylor told Burrow shortly before the pick will be made official.

Burrow, on the other hand, is just as eager to get on with the work and grind his way to greatness.

“Ready to get to practice,” he responded. “Tired of all the talking. Ready to start working out again.”

The remaining nine picks also didn’t see many surprises, as Washington Redskins took Ohio State’s pass rusher Chase Young with the No.2 pick while his fellow Buckeye, cornerback Jeff Okudah, went third overall to Detroit Lions.

New York Giants made a bit of a head-scratching move when they selected Georgia’s offensive tackle Andrew Thomas with the fourth overall pick. While the Giants needed an OT, Thomas was considered only the third-best prospect at the position.

Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers also got their quarterbacks of the future, selecting Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert, respectively.

Green Bay Packers arguably made the most shocking move in the first round, when they traded up to No.26 in order to draft Utah State’s signal-caller Jordan Love. The Packers were believed to be in a market for an offensive weapon to help their Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but instead, they selected his replacement.

The second round and third round of 2020 NFL Draft kicks off on Friday night while the rest of the rounds will play out over the weekend.

The first six picks of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night saw three quarterbacks selected, with LSU’s Joe Burrow going to the Cincinnati Bengals with the top overall pick and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa being taken by the Miami Dolphins with the fifth selection.

The next quarterback taken, Oregon’s Justin Herbert, went to the Los Angeles Chargers with the sixth overall pick and has the potential to turn his new team’s offense into one of the league’s most deadly attacks.

Pre-draft opinion on Herbert was largely mixed, with some evaluators praising Herbert’s 6’6″, 240 pound frame and top-class speed for the quarterback position. His arm strength. intelligence, and composure were other factors that led to him being a top ten pick.

On the other hand, some aren’t so sold on the former Oregon Duck, pointing out inconsistencies in decision-making and passing accuracy which could hamper his ability to succeed in the National Football League.

Herbert, however, has the potential to make his new team an offensive juggernaut after being placed in an offense that looks almost custom-tailored for his success.

The Eugene, Oregon native spent three and a half seasons as a starting quarterback in college, compiling a 29-14 win-loss record and throwing 95 touchdowns compared to only 25 interceptions.

Herbert’s Ducks, until his final season with the team which ended with a Pac-12 Championship and a Rose Bowl trophy, were a largely mediocre to above-average team that didn’t surround the quarterback with the weapons that Burrow and Tagovailoa had.

This, however, will completely change for the 22-year-old in Los Angeles.

The Chargers have one of the most talented and complete receiving corps in the National Football League, an advantage that Herbert largely lacked during his time in college. This will lead to the quarterback’s natural arm strength and play-making ability to take off, teaming up with threats such as Keenan Allen, Mike Henry, and Hunter Henry to pair a massively-talented signal caller with an elite group of pass catchers.

Herbert also gives the Chargers a new dimension of running ability, as he is lauded for his foot speed and agility. Coaches largely told Herbert not to run while in college due to concerns about his health, however, his 4.68 second 40 yard dash time shows just how talented of a runner he can be.

Herbert will have work to do in order to adjust to the NFL game and become accustomed to the speed of defenses in the league, and he would still benefit from the Chargers making some upgrades at the offensive line positions in order to protect him better.

However, it’s clear that the elements of Herbert along with a skilled and talented group of wide receivers give the Chargers the unique ability to become one of the league’s most electric offenses in the near future.

The Green Bay Packers made one of the most surprising moves in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, which was held virtually on Thursday night, by selecting Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick.

The Packers, who originally had the thirtieth overall pick of the night, traded up to acquire the pick from the Miami Dolphins, sending them their original pick and a 4th round pick in exchange.

Green Bay, which had not selected an offensive skill player in the first round since taking current quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the 2005 Draft, acquired a player that many view as the superstar’s future replacement under center.

The move surprised many and raised some eyebrows, as Rodgers is still one of the top signal callers in the league at the age of 36. Few expected the team to make a move to select a quarterback in the first round that is seen by some as Rodgers’ heir to the position.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said, “I can understand the fan base and people thinking, ‘Why would you do this at this time?’ But I just think the value of our board and the way it sat, it was the best for the Green Bay Packers, and we’re really excited to get Jordan here and get him in the door and learning our system.”

Love is expected to break camp as Rodgers’ backup and to begin learning and understanding the team’s offensive scheme this summer.

The annual National Football League draft, which is set to take begin on Thursday, April 23rd, will have a different flavor than usual thanks to the current COVID-19 pandemic which is forcing the league to do a virtual version of the event.

However, the draft will still go on as planned, and will feature seven rounds of picks and both teams and amateur players looking to make moves that will bring them success in the future.

Let’s take a shot at predicting the top five picks of the draft, which could end up changing the fortunes of the franchises that select these players.

First Pick, Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

Burrow is a near-lock to be the first overall pick in the draft, and it’s easy to see why. The Bengals need a quarterback and a franchise player, and the talented and steady Burrow is the perfect man to fill that role. Choosing a player who grew up in Ohio could even give Cincinnati the added plus of energizing a fan base that hasn’t had much to cheer about recently.

Second Pick, Washington Redskins

Chase Young, DE, Ohio State

Chase Young might just be the best player in the draft on a pure talent level, and while Washington might be tempted to select a quarterback here, we think they will ultimately pick the game-changing Buckeye here. Young is a destructive pass-rushing force that will give an immediate boost to a team that needs talent at all positions on the field

Third Pick, Detroit Lions

Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State

Looking to shore up a leaky pass defense like the Lions have had lately? Jeff Okudah, the top secondary player in this year’s draft, is a no-brainer for the team here. Detroit allowed the most pass yards in the league last year and only intercepted 7 balls, so Okudah would be a great addition for them to take a step forward in this regard.

Fourth Pick, New York Giants

Tristan Wirfs, OL, Iowa

The Giants are a pretty big wild card in the draft, with no real read on them having a clear preference for any player in particular. With Daniel Jones looking like the team’s current preference at QB, they probably won’t take a signal caller, so we think that they will take Wirfs, the best pass-blocker in the draft, with the #4 pick.

Fifth Pick, Miami Dolphins

Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon

Much has been written and debated about who will be the second quarterback taken in this year’s draft. The discussion centers around Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert, which most drafts have going in the top ten. We think the Dolphins will take the big, talented right-hander from Oregon over Tagovailoa, however, due to his cleaner bill of health and his more traditional QB traits.

Due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL decided that this year’s draft will take place in a virtual format. This was confirmed by league’s commissioner Roger Goodell in a memo sent to all 32 NFL teams on Monday.

The 2020 NFL Draft was set to take place between April 23rd and April 25th in Las Vegas, but the ongoing health crisis made it unlikely for the event to take place. The league strongly considered postponing the draft, but ended up deciding to take things into the virtual world in order not to affect the season timeline.

According to the memo, the teams and their personnel are advised to do follow the process from their homes and not to gather in team facilities.

“We have reviewed this matter in the past few days with both the competition committee and CEC [a group of league executives], and this will confirm that clubs will conduct their draft operations remotely, with club personnel separately located in their homes,”  Goodell wrote in the memo.

The league decided to close all facilities of NFL teams on March 26th because of the coronavirus, and the teams were told that the decision will stand until the conditions for their reopening are met.

“We will reopen facilities when it is safe to do so based on medical and public health advice and in compliance with government mandates,” Goodell added.

In recent weeks, the teams were forced to get creative when it comes to evaluating the 2020 draft class. This includes extended tape analysis and hosting the players for virtual interviews.

NFL Draft circus is coming to Cleveland and Kansas City. The NFL announced on Wednesday during the Spring League Meeting that Cleveland will host the draft in 2021 while Kansas City will be the location of 2023 draft. The host for 2022 NFL Draft is still to be named.

Cleveland and Kansas City were both in the running to host some of the previous drafts, but the league ended up choosing Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, and most recently Nashville. Denver was also one of the favorites to land the hosting gig for the upcoming drafts, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if 2022 NFL Draft lands in Mile High City.

According to the league’s announcement, draft in Cleveland will take place around “iconic downtown locations around FirstEnergy Stadium, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as on the shore of Lake Erie.”

“We are incredibly honored to be able to showcase the City of Cleveland and the passion of Browns fans through the unique international platform the NFL Draft provides,” – said Cleveland Browns owners’ Dee and Jimmy Haslam in a statement.

Kansas City will host the ceremony at “iconic area around Union Station and the National World War I Museum and Memorial.”

“Kansas City and Chiefs Kingdom are thrilled to have been selected by the NFL to host this prestigious event,” – said Kansas City Sports Commission Kathy Nelson president in a statement. “Hometown pride runs deep in the Midwest. We are excited to show the world our unparalleled passion for sports, especially our passion for professional football.”

The 2020 NFL Draft will be held in Las Vegas, presumably from April 23rd to April 25th.

One of the NFL Draft’s most highly-rated defensive players suffered a major injury while training for April’s event.

Jeffery Simmons, a defensive end out of Mississippi State University, confirmed in a post on twitter that he has torn his ACL while preparing for the draft.

Before his unfortunate injury, Simmons was widely projected to be a first round draft pick in April’s draft.

Simmons has been a standout defensive end throughout his college football career for Mississippi State University. He recorded an outstanding total of 30 tackles for a loss during his last two seasons.

He was named a member of the All-Southeastern Conference squad each year.

Simmons will undergo surgery to repair his torn ACL next week, but this throws his draft status in jeopardy. Teams might not be willing to select the defensive end as early as they might have otherwise due to the uncertainty surrounding his knee injury.

The 6’4”, 300 pound defensive end will miss all of the 2019 NFL season with his injury.

Whichever team takes him in the draft will have to balance their team’s current needs with the fact that Simmons will not be able to help them in the short term.

It remains to be seen how fall this injury will cause Simmons to drop in the draft.

Kyler Murray, the dual-sport star that won the Heisman Trophy with Oklahoma as college football’s top player this season, signed a contract to play professional baseball last year.

The team that signed him, however, learned today that he will not honor that contract after deciding to focus his professional sports career on football.

Murray, who was taken by the MLB’s Oakland Athletics with the 9th overall pick in last June’s baseball draft, will forgo a $4.6 million dollar signing bonus that he was promised if he chose to play baseball instead of football.

Murray released a statement in which he said that his passion is football, and that despite the contract he signed with Oakland to play baseball, he believes that his future lies in the game of football.

The 20-year-old superstar played outfield while on the baseball diamond, the sport that he is setting aside. In football, he is a dynamic quarterback with gifted running and passing abilities.

Murray, with today’s decision, will declare for the NFL Draft at the end of April.

Most experts believe that Murray will be a first round pick in the draft, and some even say that he could be chosen within the draft’s top five picks.

Murray states that he will now begin workouts and preparation for the NFL Draft, with his goal being “to prove to NFL decision makers that (he) is the franchise QB in this draft.”
