New York Jets coach Robert Saleh has backtracked on his previous claim three weeks ago that Zach Wilson would be the Jets’ starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. When questioned about his lineup for the game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Saleh remained noncommital, refusing that confirm that Wilson would be his quarterback of choice for the game.

The second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, this marks the first occasion on which Wilson’s status as the Jets’ first-choice quarterback has come into question.

“We’re keeping everything on the table over the next couple of days,” Saleh stated in response to the press’s questioning. Upon being pressed for an answer about Wilson’s inclusion in the squad, Saleh replied, “Not right now, not until I’m done evaluating everything.”

Wilson is 5-2 as a starter this season, however, his first-choice status has come into question after he performed poorly in two of the last three games. In the Jets’ two recent losses to the New England Patriots, Wilson managed to complete just nine of his 22 passes from a career-low 77 yards.

The New York Jets’ search for Adam Gase’s successor ended on Thursday.

The organization announced that they have an “agreement in principle” with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to be their new head coach.

Saleh had his second interview with the Jets’ brass earlier this week during which he managed to convince the organization that he’s the right man for the job. The team went on and made him an offer on Thursday night, and the two sides reportedly agreed to a five-year deal.

Saleh already started assembling his coaching staff and has the 49ers’ passing-game coordinator Mike LaFleur as his top pick for an offensive coordinator. LeFleur is the brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

Robert Saleh has been a candidate for head coaching vacancies in the league for some time now, thanks to the great job he did with the 49ers’ defense. He was among the favorites to take over Cleveland Browns last year and had interviews with six teams this year.

However, working in a big market and the possibility of turning around the dysfunctional franchise was appealing to Saleh more than other situations. He now gets a chance to build a team to his liking and get more power in a decision-making process than he would probably have with other teams.

On the Jets’ side, getting Saleh was a no-brainer. He is regarded as an energetic coach who has a great relationship with players, holds people accountable, and appreciates hard work. Following a disastrous two years under Adam Gase, the organization believed this is what they need to stop being a laughingstock of the league.

Saleh started his career in NFL with the Houston Texans, holding several positions on the coaching staff between 2005 and 2010. He then worked as a defensive quality control coach with the Seattle Seahawks and linebacker coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars before taking over as San Francisco’s DC in 2017.

Under Saleh, the 49ers’ defense emerged as one of the best units in football. This included being ranked second in total defense in 2019, the team’s best effort since 1997.

New York Jets are not having a great season in 2019, as they currently find themselves at the bottom of AFC East with 2-7 record. Despite this, however, the team remains confident in the coaching staff and head coach Adam Gase. So confident, in fact, that they are already guaranteeing him job safety through 2020.

Jets’ owner Christopher Johnson had a brief chat with reporters after Wednesday’s practice and told them that Gase won’t be fired no matter how this season ends. He also assured them that Jets’ will keep the same coach next season as well.

“I want to assure you there will be no changes in coaches here,” – said Johnson. “Adam has the trust of this team. He has the trust of Sam [Darnold]. He has Joe [Douglas’] trust. He has my trust. He’s a good man. He’s a good coach.”

New York Jets brought in Adam Gase in January despite the fact that he was coming off an unsuccessful stint with Miami Dolphins, where he posted 23–26 record. Gase was supposed to lift the team’s offense and to help turn around the organization, but he hasn’t had much success in that so far.

Jets are currently rank dead last in NFL in total offense while ranking in top three in turnovers this season. Gase also failed to bring out the best out of second-year quarterback Sam Darnold, whose numbers are down compared to his rookie season.

While Gase has the owner’s supports, for now, he shouldn’t be too relaxed. If the Jets continue to go down the same road, Johnson could easily change his mind and bring in another coach.

New York Jets decided for a surprise shakeup of their front office on Wednesday and said goodbye to general manager Mike Maccagnan. The move was confirmed by CEO Christopher Johnson, who also announced that head coach Adam Gase will serve as interim GM until Maccagnan’s replacement is found.

The Jets also parted ways with vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger in a related move.

The move comes as a shock especially since Maccagnan played a big role in Gase’s hiring and overlooked both the free agency, highlighted by the signing of Pro Bowl running back Le’Veon Bell and the 2019 NFL Draft.

“There’s never a good time to do this,” – said Johnson during a conference call with reporters. “This is about more than one draft or one free agency, even two. As I educated myself about this process, it became more clear to me, the deeper I got in this building, that it was time for a change and a time to move on.”

Several names already came up in Jets’ search for a new GM but Philadelphia Eagles’ executive Joe Douglas is reportedly the leading candidate for the job.

According to various reports, the reason for why the Jets decided to fire Mike Maccagnan is that he and Adam Gase didn’t agree on several offseason moves including Bell’s signing. Gase reportedly didn’t like Maccagnan’s decision to give Bell a four-year, $52.5 million contract with $27 million guaranteed, considering this to be too much for a running back.

It’s been a little over a month since Mike McCarthy was fired by Green Bay Packers, but the 55-year-old is already willing to get back into the game. According to NFL Insider Ian Rapaport, McCarthy plans to interview with the New York Jets and Cleveland Brown for their head coaching vacancies.

Thanks to his accomplished CV, which includes Super Bowl trophy and being in the top 10 most winning coaches in the history of the league, McCarthy garnered interest from several NFL teams in the recent weeks. He already refused the opportunity to interview with the Arizona Cardinals, but according to sources, that didn’t mean he will take the year off.

The reason Mike McCarthy might emerge as a leading candidate for both the Jets and the Browns is his reputation for being great with young quarterbacks. He is credited for developing Aaron Rodgers into one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, something both New York and Cleveland hope he could achieve with Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield respectively.

McCarthy worked in NFL since 1993 on several positions, including being an offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. He joined the Packers in 2006 and spent almost 13 years with the franchise before being fired in December 2018. His coaching record includes being 125–77–2 in the regular season and 10-8 in the postseason.

New York Jets have announced on Friday that they will extend the contracts of head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan through 2020. Both Bowles and Maccagnan were hired on the same day in 2015 and were entering the final year of their contracts. The news about extension was confirmed on team’s official Twitter profile.

We are very happy to have extended both Mike and Todd. During their time here, they have worked together to help the organization build a foundation on which to grow,” – said Jets’ CEO Christopher Johnson in a statement. “They are identifying, developing, and getting productivity out of our players. I believe we are headed in the right direction. This provides us continuity and stability as we continue to move this team towards sustained success. We still have a lot of work to do and I am excited to work closely with both of them as we move forward.

The Jets have entered in the 2017 season with low expectations, after beginning a rebuilding process and deciding to give a chance to younger players. The ownership previously said that the record won’t be so important into deciding whether they’ll keep Bowles and Maccagnan, but rather the progress the team makes. Although the Jets are currently 5-10, and lost eight of their last 10 games, the progress was evident. Despite not having a quality roster, Jets showed that they can be competitive in almost every game they played so far.

Bowles, who is 20-27 during his tenure with the Jets, didn’t want to talk much about the extension but said his goal in the future is to try and win a Super Bowl.

Obviously, the future is trying to win a Super Bowl and trying to get to the playoffs,” – he said. “We’ll add some pieces. We made some strides this year. Not enough strides, not winning enough games, but going forward we’ll make the proper adjustments and go from there.
