New England Revolution hired MLS veteran Caleb Porter as the club’s new head coach. Porter will replace U.S. soccer legend Bruce Arena, who left the club midway through the 2023 campaign.

Porter has been out of a job since the end of 2022, being fired by Columbus Crew after the club missed out on MLS Cup playoffs in consecutive seasons.

Revolution considered a number of candidates for their head coaching vacancy, including high-profile names like Bob Bradley and Gio Savarese. However, according to New England’s sporting director Curt Onalfo, Porter separated himself from the pack with his leadership, tactical skills, and proven record of playing winning soccer in MLS.

“Caleb Porter is a gifted and respected coach with more than two decades of coaching experience who has delivered MLS Cup championships to both of his previous clubs. Caleb has consistently demonstrated the leadership and tactical acumen needed to build a winning team in our league,” Onalfo said in a statement. “We know he is the right person to lead our team, which we believe is already well positioned to compete for trophies.”

Caleb Porter had a brief playing career in MLS in the late 1990s but was forced to retire due to injuries. After coaching at the college level and with United States U23, Porter was hired as the head coach of Portland Timbers in 2013.

Porter spent five years with the Timbers, winning MLS Coach of the Year honors in his first season and bringing MLS Cup win to Portland in 2015. He left the franchise on a mutual agreement after the 2017 campaign and spent one year away from coaching before taking over Columbus Crew.

With Crew, Porter won another MLS Cup in 2020 and the Campeones Cup in 2021. He became just the sixth head coach in league history with multiple MLS Cup wins and only the third to do it with two different clubs.

The New England Revolution reportedly acquired right-back Nick Lima in a trade with the Austin FC. Revolution will send $275,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to Austin in exchange.

According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio, the trade will become official once the MLS trade window opens on December 11.

Lima is a great pickup for Revolution, filling a position of need. The club’s starting right-back, Brandon Bye, is still out with an ACL injury and is expected to miss the start of the new MLS season.

Austin FC, on the other hand, is currently undergoing a rebuild and is focused on clearing up its roster and turning to younger players. Lima doesn’t fit this vision due to his age (29) and large contract.

Nick Lima made his professional debut with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2017 and played 115 games during his four seasons with the club. He was traded to the Austin FC ahead of the 2021 campaign in exchange for $500,000 in GAM. Lima scored eight goals and dished 20 assists in 195 games in MLS.

Lima also made nine appearances with the United States men’s national team. All of his international games with USMNT came in 2019, and he hasn’t been called up since.

Veteran striker Jozy Altidore, who made 115 caps for USMNT, is no longer a member of MLS side New England Revolution. According to The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio and Tom Bogert, the Revolution made a decision to buy out Altidore’s contract and make him a free agent.

The move was somewhat expected, considering that Altidore never settled in with Revolution since he signed with the team in 2022. He only scored two goals in 30 games during his time in New England, which also included a six-month loan with Liga MX side Puebla.

Buying out Altidore’s contract allows Revolution to free up valuable salary cap space that they can use for summer deals. It also makes their crowded striker group more manageable.

Altidore can immediately sign with another MLS team or pursue a deal overseas. The initial reports indicate that he has fans in Greece, where AEK Athens and PAOK are believed to be interested in his services.

Jozy Altidore was considered one of the biggest U.S. talents of his generation. He made an MLS debut as a 16-year-old with New York Red Bulls and spent three seasons with the club before securing a transfer to La Liga side Villareal. He later played with AZ Alkmaar and Sunderland, among other clubs.

Altidore returned to MLS in 2015, signing with Toronto FC. While in Toronto, he became one of the league’s biggest stars, earning two All-Star nods and winning an MLS Cup in 2017. However, his time there turned sour by 2022, when the team decided to buy out his contract.

Ex-USMNT striker Jozy Altidore will continue his soccer career with the New England Revolution after signing a three-year contract with the MLS side on Monday. Altidore joins the Revs after spending the previous seven years with the Toronto FC.

Altidore is a free agent signing for the Revolution since he previously agreed to a buyout with Toronto. According to reports, the Canadian club agreed to pay the 32-year-old around $4.5 million to get him out of town.

Altidore had a challenging couple of seasons, dealing with multiple injuries and enduring a strained relationship with Toronto’s coaching staff. As a result, he only suited up for 26 games and scored just seven goals in 2020 and 2021 combined.

But despite Altidore’s struggles, New England’s head coach Bruce Arena believes the striker can get his career back on track with the Revs.

“I believe Jozy can continue to be an outstanding goal scorer, and we will work hard to get him back to full fitness and in good form over the next couple of months,” said Arena.

Altidore scored 79 goals for Toronto in 173 appearances while helping the club to win MLS Cup in 2017. He also received several individual accolades, including MLS Cup MVP Award and two MLS All-Star honors.

Earlier in his career, Altidore played for New York Red Bulls, Villarreal, and Sunderland, among other teams. He also made 115 appearances for United States Men’s National Team and has scored 42 goals on the international stage.

New England Revolution didn’t start the 2020 MLS season as they would like, managing a draw against the Chicago fire and losing to Montreal Impact in the first two games. Things might be better moving forward, however, as they will finally have their key player Carles Gil ready to play.

Gil, who missed the preseason and the start of the 2020 MLS campaign with a foot injury, had his first full practice this week and is optimistic about returning to action as soon as Sunday.

“I feel good. This is only the third practice that I’ve had with the team, but I feel good coming off the injury,” Gil told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ll take it day by day, little by little, and see how everything goes when the game gets closer.”

Gil joined New England in early 2019 and immediately established himself as one of the team’s most important pieces. He played 34 games last season and contributed with 10 goals and 14 assists while winning the MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

Considering Gil’s contribution last year, it isn’t surprising that Revolutions’  head coach Bruce Arena  acknowledged the Spanish midfielder’s absence played a part in their slow start in 2020,

“He was certainly a key player with our team last year, and we’ve missed not having him,” said Arena. “We missed him in the preseason and up until today, so it’s great to have him back and hopefully he can keep making progress.”

Gil came to the United States after a respectable career in Europe, where he played with Valencia, Aston Villa, and Deportivo La Coruna. He was also part of Spain’s U21 team.

New England Revolution might get a flashy new addition to their roster for 2020 MLS season. According to Boston Globe’s Frank Dell’Apa, Revolution has brought in former Manchester City star midfielder Jack Rodwell for a trial.

Dell’Apa also reports that Rodwell was joined by Dutch fullback Alexander Buttner, who also has experience playing in Premier League with Manchester United. Both players are currently free agents.

Rodwell went through Everton’s youth academy and was considered to be one of the most talented Premier League prospects at the time. He seemed like he was poised for a big career after joining Manchester City in 2012 in a transfer worth more than $20 million, but a series of injuries stopped him from living up to his potential.

Following an unsuccessful two-season long stint with City, Rodwell signed with Sunderland where he spent the following four years. The 28-year-old reportedly considered coming to MLS when his contract with the club expired in 2018, but instead opted to join Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Buttner, on the other side, spent the better part of his career in his native Netherlands, playing for Vitesse in two separate stints. He was also spent time with Man Utd, Dynamo Moscow, and Anderlecht.

New England Revolution was happy with the way forward Cristian Penilla and midfielder Luis Caicedo performed this year, so the team decided to turn their loan deals into permanent moves. Penilla and Caicedo were on one-year-long loans from Mexico’s Pachuca and Colombia’s Cortulua, respectively.

Revolution confirmed the news via their official Twitter profile.

This year both Penilla and Caicedo were impactful players on the field for us and we felt it was important to exercise both players’ permanent transfer options at the start of the offseason,” – said team’s general manager Michael Burns in a statement. “We look forward to seeing both players continue to grow and contribute to the team’s success moving forward.

Cristian Penilla started his professional career in his native Ecuador, before making a transfer to Pachuca in 2015. However, he never managed to settle in the club and was sent on several loans before coming to MLS. With Revolution, Penilla rediscovered his form and ended up being the team’s leading scorer with 12 goals in 33 games while also providing seven assists.

Spending his youth career with Portugal’s powerhouse Sporting, Luis Caicedo never managed to get a chance in Europe and decided to sign with Cortulua in 2015. After some strong performances with the club, he was brought in by New England in March and ended up establishing himself as one of the best young defensive midfielders in the league. He played 30 games in MLS and has scored one goal.

LAFC have been quite busy in past couple of days. The team first traded for New England Revolution attacking midfielder Lee Nguyen and then signed former Hull City forward Adama Diomande on the same day.

In order to get Lee Nguyen, who requested to be traded earlier this year, LAFC gave up $700,000 in allocation money with further $250,000 and 2019 or 2020 first-round draft pick going to Revolution as well if certain conditions are met. According to ESPN, Revolution had better offers from some of the Eastern Conference teams for Nguyen but was reluctant to trade the player within the conference.

Lee Nguyen joined New England Revolution in 2012 and established himself as one of the team’s most valuable players. During the six seasons he spent with the team, the 31-year-old scored 54 goals and had 56 assists in 211 league and cup appearances. He was also the finalist for the 2014 Major League Soccer MVP Award. Nguyen also had nine appearances for the USMNT.

Adama Diomande joins LAFC after being released by Hull City, where he played three years and scored six goals in 49 matches. He also made ten appearances for Norway’s national football team scoring one goal.

We are excited to add Adama to our Club,” – said LAFC general manager John Thorrington. “Adama is a dangerous striker who will add another element to our attack. He has top-level international and club experience, and, with his familiarity with Bob, we expect him to contribute immediately. In Adama, we are signing another very good player in the prime of his career.

In LAFC he will be reunited with coach Bob Bradley, after previously working under him at Norway’s Stabaek.

Adama is a quality goalscorer who brings the experience of playing at a high level in Europe,” – said Bradley. “We believe he will have a strong impact in MLS.
