NCAA championship-winning head coach John Calipari and Kentucky Wildcats are heading their separate ways. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Calipari will leave the Wildcats to take the head coaching job at Arkansas.

Calipari is expected to sign a five-year contract with a salary that comes below the $8.5 million annually he was making with Kentucky. However, he would be able to earn more through performance-based incentives.

The blockbuster move wasn’t entirely unexpected. Calipari and Kentucky’s athletic department seemed to be at odds in recent years as the Wildcats underperformed. They haven’t made it to the Final Four since 2015 and failed to make it out of the Round of 32 since 2019.

Calipari joined Kentucky in 2009 and immediately made a big impact. In 2012, he led the Wildcats to their first NCAA championship since 1998 and made four Final Four appearances in his first six years in charge. However, things haven’t looked great in recent years, and a split might turn out to be the best outcome for both sides.

Arkansas recently saw head coach Eric Musselman leave for USC and is now making a big bet that Calipari can not only continue the impressive job Musselman was doing but also take the program to new heights. Razorbacks have been waiting for a Final Four appearance since 1995.

Duke seems to be more than satisfied with the job head coach Jon Scheyer did since taking over the Blue Devils basketball program from Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski. The university announced on Saturday that Scheyer received a new six-year extension that will keep him with the Blue Devils through the 2028-2029 college season.

Scheyer originally inked a five-year contract when he stepped in for Krzyzewski ahead of the 2022-23 season. He led the Blue Devils to a 27-9 record, an ACC Tournament win, and second round of the NCAA Tournament in his first year in charge.

“Jon Scheyer has seamlessly continued the championship culture in Duke Basketball with his relentless energy, passion, and attention to detail,” said Duke University Director of Athletics Nina King in a statement. “He and his staff hold their team to the highest standard … Our program is in tremendous hands well into the future, and I could not be more excited to have Jon lead the way.”

Jon Scheyer played for the Blue Devils between 2006 and 2010, being part of the team that was crowned NCAA champions in 2010. After a brief professional career, which saw him play with Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv and Spain’s Gran Canaria, Scheyer returned to Duke in 2014 in the role of an assistant. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2018 before being selected as Krzyzewski’s successor after the famed coach retired following the 2021-22 season.

Purdue’s center Zach Edey announced on social media that he withdrew his name from the 2023 NBA Draft. Instead, Edey will return to Purdue for one last season of college basketball with the Boilermakers.

Edey finished the 2023 college season, averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks. He was named the National Player of the Year at the end of the campaign.

One of the reasons why Edey might have decided to run it back is the disappointing way Purdue’s season ended. They entered the 2023 NCAA Tournament as the No.1 seed but finished their run in the first round, being sensationally knocked out by No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson.

Another reason for Edey’s decision might be the fact that he wasn’t expected to be selected with a high pick in this year’s draft. Several mock drafts had him going in the late second round, while some projected him going undrafted.

While Edey’s success at college is noteworthy, the NBA scouts don’t seem to think his game would translate well in the pros. He isn’t a perimeter scored and doesn’t attempt three-pointers at all while being slow due to his size.

Edey will now hope that another year of college basketball will allow him to polish some of his shortcomings and improve his stock before entering the 2024 NBA Draft.

Many things have changed at UConn since the Huskies won its first national championship in 1999. But what hasn’t change was its status as one of the premier programs in college basketball. That showed in the 2023 National Championship game in which UConn beat San Diego State to capture its fifth title in the past four years.

UConn entered the finals game firing on all cylinders and had a 16-point lead at one point in the first half. San Diego State managed to make a brief run to make it interesting but never seemed close to orchestrating a comeback. Their emotional win against the Florida Atlantic in the semis seemed to have taken its toll.

Junior center Adama Sanogo was the star of the show for the Huskies, scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass. Sanogo, who averaged 20.2 points and 9.8 rebounds in the first five games, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

What was especially impressive about UConn’s run was the dominance they exerted on their opponents. With a 76-59 win over the Aztecs on Monday night, the Huskies became just the fifth team in nearly four decades to win all of the six games with double digits.

“We knew we were the best team in the tournament going in, and we just had to play to our level,” said Huskies’ head coach Dan Hurley.

Hurley, who arrived at UConn five seasons ago now joined Jim Calhoun and Kevin Ollie as one of the three coaches to win the national title for the program. And considering the great job he has done so far, who is to say that he won’t add a few more to the trophy cabinet in the future?

Michigan State men’s college basketball coach Tom Izzo has penned a new five-year deal with the team, the university announced on Thursday. Valued at $6.2 million per season, the agreement sees Izzo earn approximately an additional $2 million per year.

At 67 years of age, Izzo has coached Michigan State since the 1995-96 season, when he was promoted from assistant coach to head coach in replacement of the retiring Jud Heathcote. During this time, he led the Spartans to the 2000 National Championship as well as 24 straight NCAA tournaments, including eight Final Four appearances. In addition, he has won the Big Ten title on 10 occasions and six conference tournament championships.

“We greatly appreciate Coach Izzo’s commitment to our outstanding university and his competitive drive to keep Spartan basketball as a national powerhouse,” university president Samuel Stanley remarked following the signing of the deal. According to the university, the rollover contract will need to be approved by its board next month.

While Izzo’s tenure as the head coach got off to a slow start, he gradually strengthened the Spartans’ ranks until they emerged into a national powerhouse, appearing in regular Big Ten competitions.

The Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is getting a handsome reward for bringing the program its third national title in 2022. According to multiple reports, Smart inked a new 10-year, $112.5 million contract that will make him the highest-paid coach in college football.

The University of Georgia announced the deal on their official website, stating that Smart is now locked to the program through the 2031 season. However, the announcement didn’t contain the financial terms of the agreement.

“I am excited for our football program’s continued success under his direction,” said Georgia’s director of athletics Josh Brooks. “The future of Georgia Football remains bright with Coach Smart as its steadfast leader.”

Smart actually played college football with Bulldogs, while Georgia was also the place where he started his college career in the late 1990s. He later spent time with various programs in different roles before making a name for himself with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Smart served as Alabama’s defensive coordinator for eight years before taking the Bulldogs’ head coaching job in 2016.

During his time as the Bulldogs’ head coach, Smart compiled a 66-15 record. He won five Bowls and beat his mentor Nick Saban and Crimson Tide in 2021’s national championship game.

“It’s an honor being the head football coach at the University of Georgia, and while I’m certainly proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, I’m confident the best is yet to come,” said Smart in a statement.

LSU and head coach Ed Orgeron will go their separate ways after the 2021 NCAA season wraps up. The school confirmed the news via an official press release made by athletic director Scott Woodward.

In the statement, Woodward said that LSU is “forever grateful to Coach O” for the contributions he made during his six seasons as the coach of the Tigers. He explained the decision by saying that the school believes it is “time for a new direction” after underwhelming the past two seasons.

“The search for LSU Football’s next championship head coach begins now,” Woodward added.

Ed Orgeron joined LSU as the defensive line coach in 2015 before being hired as interim head coach a year later after the school fired Les Miles. After leading the Tigers to a 6-2 record in his eight games at the helm, Orgeron had the “interim” tag removed.

In 2019, Orgeron led LSU to a perfect season, going 15-0 and delivering the Tigers their fourth national championship. But it turned out that this success was unsustainable as the team went 5-5 the year after and are 4-3 so far in 2021.

Still, Orgeron hopes to finish his stint with the team on a high note and is committed to seeing out the end of the season.

“We’re going to finish,” Orgeron said in a statement. “We’re not going to blink. I’m going to be right there with them. That’s the reason, Scott and I mutually agreed, that I’m going to finish with this team.”

After parting ways with head coach Clay Helton several weeks ago, USC wants to bring some NFL experience to their football program. According to multiple reports, ex-Los Angeles head coach and current Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn emerged as a candidate to replace Helton in recent days.

NFL Media’s Jim Trotter reports that USC already reached out to Lynn via boosters to get a better understanding of his interest in coaching at the college level. They returned with a positive answer, but the school has yet to make an official approach to Lynn.

If he takes over the Trojans, that would be the first college coaching experience for Anthony Lynn in any capacity.

His first coaching gig saw him become a special teams assistant with the Denver Broncos in 2000 before embarking on stints as a running backs coach with several organizations, including the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, and Buffalo Bills. In 2016, Lynn became the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills and briefly served as interim head coach after the franchise fired Rex Ryan.

Ahead of the 2017 NFL season, Lynn left the Bills to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. He spent a total of four years with the organization, posting a 33-31 head-coaching record and leading the Chargers to one playoff appearance during that span.

The Dallas Cowboys locked up their offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to a multi-year extension. The team confirmed the deal on their social media on Sunday.

Reportedly, the extension will keep Moore with the franchise through the 2023 NFL season. This also means that the 32-year-old coach won’t pursue a college head coaching job with the Boise State Broncos.

Moore was a starting quarterback for four years (2008-2011) at Boise State and immediately emerged as the favorite to take over the Broncos when Bryan Harsin left the program. However, the Cowboys were aware of that and acted quickly to tie him for the franchise on a long-term deal.

“I love Boise State,” said Moore in a statement released by Dallas. “I will always root for them, and I hope one day to be a part of the program again.”

“We are building something special here in Dallas,” he added. “I am thankful to the Jones family and [head coach] Mike McCarthy for providing me with the opportunity to coach these special players. I am excited for us to put it all together and finish the job.”

Kellen Moore spent three years with the Cowboys as a player before retiring after the 2017 NFL season. Moore immediately took over the quarterback coach position with the organization and was then promoted to offensive coordinator after just one year on the job.

In his first season as Dallas’ OC, Moore overlooked an offense that was best in the league in terms of yards per game with 431.5. During that time, the Cowboys also finished second in passing yards with 296.9 per game and fifth in rushing yards with 134.6 per game.

The Cowboys’ offense looked good to begin 2020 as well, but the injury problems at the QB position and across the O-Line made it harder for the team to keep up with the same tempo. The team finished the regular season ranking 12th in the league in yards per game.

The 2020/21 college basketball season is going to take place despite the challenges caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The news was confirmed on Wednesday by NCAA Division I Council.

According to the Council’s decision, college basketball will return on November 25th, two weeks later than usual. Teams will not be able to held scrimmages or play exhibition games before that.

The unusual circumstances of this season will result in a smaller number of tournaments and cause teams to play fewer games. The minimum amount of games that teams must play in order to be NCAA tournament-eligible is 13 while the max is set on 27 games.

Reportedly, NCAA is currently considering staging eight tournaments in a bubble setting early in the college season. The organization would follow the NBA’s example, and games would be played at Disney World in Orlando.

The outlook of the NCAA men’s tournament is still unsettled, although the division’s leadership expressed hopes to have 68 teams play in 14 different locations. If this isn’t possible, this tournament could also be held in a bubble setting.

The 2019/20 NCAA Division I men’s basketball season concluded prematurely due to the COVID-19 outbreak and all postseason tournaments were canceled.
