The wait for Joel Embiid’s first NBA MVP award is over. The Philadelphia 76ers’ star was unveiled as the Most Valuable Player in the league for the 2022-23 season, edging out Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic and Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Although it seemed that this year’s race for the NBA MVP award was going to be close, Embiid ended up getting overwhelming support from the voters. He received 73 first-place votes out of 100 available and finished with 915 points. Jokic was second with 15 first-place votes and 674 points, while Antetokounmpo received 12 first-point votes and a total of 606 points.

Embiid established himself as a perennial MVP candidate in recent years and finished runner-up in the past two seasons. He finally got over the hump this year thanks to a spectacular campaign that saw him average a career-high 33.1 points per game while adding 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists. The 29-year-old player also kept his status as one of the best defenders in the league.

“I don’t even know where to start,” Embiid said during his appearance on TNT’s Inside the NBA. “It’s been a long time coming, a lot of hard work. I’ve been through a lot, and I’m not just talking about basketball … I don’t know what to say. It’s amazing.”

After the news was announced, Embiid went on social media to share a post from 2014 in which he ranked predicted himself as the NBA MVP winner.

Joel Embiid becomes the fifth member of the 76ers to win the MVP honors and the first since Allen Iverson (2000-01). The rest of the 76ers’ MVP winners were Julius Erving (1980-81), Moses Malone (1982-83), and Wilt Chamberlain, who won the award three consecutive times between 1966 and 1968.

The Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan is often viewed as the best player in the history of the NBA. And the league appears to be agreeing.

The NBA just announced that its annual MVP award, given to the most valuable player in a given season, will be named after Jordan. The announcement was followed by the unveiling of the redesigned trophy.

Jordan won five MVP awards in his career, trailing only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s six MVP honors. He led the Bulls to six NBA championships and made the All-Star team 14 times. He was also the scoring leader 10 times and had an NBA Defensive Player of the Year award on his resume as well.

The first recipient of the new Michael Jordan MVP trophy will be the Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic. The NBA decided to award the trophy retroactively to Jokic for his MVP campaign in the 2021-22 season.

Besides Michael Jordan, the league decided to honor a number of other iconic NBA players. The Defensive Player of the Year award will be named after Houston Rockets’ great Hakeem Olajuwon, while the Rookie of the Year trophy will carry the name of Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain.

John Havlicek, the eight-time NBA title winner with the Boston Celtics, will lend its name to the Sixth Man of the Year trophy, while the Most Improved Player of the Year award will now carry the name of one of the professional basketball pioneers George Mikan.

The Denver Nuggets star center Nikola Jokic is adding another NBA’s Most Valuable Player award to his resume. According to multiple reports, Jokic was voted the NBA MVP for the 2021-22 season. The 27-year-old player was the MVP last season as well.

Jokic is the 15th player in the NBA to get multiple MVP awards. He beat out the Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid and the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, who were the remaining two finalists for the award. The league is expected to officially confirm the news at some point this week.

Nikola Jokic had a career year in 2021-22 that saw him average 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.5 steals. He also became the first player in NBA history to rack up 2,000 points, 1,000 boards, and 500 assists in a single season.

Thanks to his performances, the Nuggets finished as a sixth seed in the Western Conference with a 48-34 record. This was despite the fact that All-Star guard Jamal Murray missed the entire season, and their talented forward Michael Porter Jr. played only nine games. However, Jokic couldn’t do much in the playoffs, where Denver was handed a gentleman’s sweep by the Golden State Warriors in the first round.

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is this year’s recipient of the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award. Jokic became just the sixth international player to get this honor and the first center to do it since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000.

Jokic blew out the competition, receiving 91 first-place votes out of 101 possible and a total of 971 points. Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid finished second in the voting, totaling 586 points but just one first-place vote. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors rounds up the top three with five first-place votes and 453 points.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” said Jokic about the award. “But it’s something that, like I said to the guys, it’s not just me. I couldn’t do it by myself. It’s something that it is an individual award, but it’s the effort of everybody who is part of the Denver Nuggets organization.”

Nikola Jokic was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 2014 with the 41st overall pick. After adjusting to the league in his rookie season, Jokic quickly emerged as the franchise cornerstone for the Nuggets. He has been an All-Star each year since 2019 while managing to make two All-NBA teams.

In 2020-21, Jokic had his best statistical outing while leading Denver to the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. During the regular season, the 26-year-old Serbian averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks) and Chris Paul (Phoenix Suns) were the remaining players to receive first-place votes by the media. The New York Knicks’ Derrick Rose also received one, thanks to the fan vote.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, who was the favorite for the MVP award before injuries limited his appearances in the regular season, made it to just one ballot. This meant that James has received an MVP vote for 18 consecutive seasons, or every year since entering the NBA.

The Los Angeles Lakers will kick off their postseason facing this year’s NBA MVP. That is, at least, according to Lakers superstar LeBron James.

James had a chat with reporters on Sunday night in which he discussed the Lakers’ upcoming play-in game against the Golden State Warriors. He said that his team has to be on “its best” as they will be playing against the “MVP of our league in Steph Curry.”

“I mean, just look at what he’s done this year. I don’t know anything else if you’re looking for an MVP. If Steph is not on Golden State’s team, what are we looking at?”, said James. He also added that Curry had “the best season all year.”

The Lakers and Warriors will meet on Wednesday, with the winner of the contest locking the No. 7 seed for the playoffs. The loser will face either the San Antonio Spurs or Memphis Grizzlies to determine the No. 8 seed.

Steph Curry was the only bright spot on a Warriors team that battled injuries for the better part of the season. Curry had arguably his best statistical season as a pro, averaging a career-high 32 points and winning the NBA’s scoring title for the second time in his career. He also added 5.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists while shooting 42.1 percent from the three-point line.

Still, Curry most likely won’t get much consideration for his third MVP award due to the Warriors’ poor record. Golden State finished eighth in the Western Conference standings with a 39-33 record for the season.

The Most Valuable Player award for the 2020-21 NBA season will most likely go to either the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic or the Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid. If this happens, either of them will become the first center to get the honors since Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal.

The regular-season MVP award doesn’t always mean that much in the context of the actual playoffs, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. It’s the biggest level of individual praise a player can receive in the NBA—but who will win it this year?

Luka Dončić

A great candidate for the award is the Dallas Mavericks young leader, Luka Dončić. If he can manage to lead his team to one of the top three seeds in the West, voters may be swayed in his favor.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

An obvious choice for the award is the Greek Freak, who also happened to win it the last two years. Can Giannis go for a three-peat?

James Harden

James Harden has averaged over 30 points per game the last three seasons, and he’ll likely extend that streak to this season too. He’s already won the MVP before, but there’s no reason he won’t be able to do it again.

Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi is known best for his ability to come through in the postseason, but there’s still no reason a player of his stature has never won an MVP. Depending on how far the Clippers go this season (and how often he suits up), look for voters to maybe give him the nod.

LeBron James

Although LeBron has four MVP trophies in his back pocket, his game is still looking fresher than ever. If he can smoothly transfer the Lakers’ success from last year over to this year, he might be able to snag number five.

Kevin Durant

Regarded by many to be the best player in the league, Kevin Durant is certainly a candidate to win his second MVP. If he can lead the Brooklyn Nets to the number one seed, he might just do it.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Milwaukee Bucks exited the playoffs earlier than expected, but that didn’t stop him from getting recognition for an impressive regular season. The NBA announced on Friday that Antetokounmpo was voted as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in the 2019/20 season.

This is the second consecutive MVP award for Antetokounmpo as he took home the trophy in 2018/19 as well. He joins the rare company of 11 players who won back-to-back MVPs, including the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, LeBron James, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James came second in the MVP voting, while Houston Rockets’ James Harden was third.

Antetokounmpo previously also won the Defensive Player of the Year award, becoming only the third player after Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon to receive MVP and DPOY honors in the same year.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had an impressive regular season from an individual standpoint, averaging 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. But more importantly, Antetokounmpo was a moving force for the Bucks as the team finished the regular season with the league-best 56 – 17 record.

Unfortunately for Antetokounmpo, he and the Bucks couldn’t translate their dominance to the postseason. The 25-year-old Greek superstar battled injuries and inconsistency as Milwaukee was handed a swift second-round exit by Miami Heat.

The Greek Freak dominated headlines in the 2018-19 season with unbelievable performances, high-flying dunks, and his leadership in taking the Milwaukee Bucks to the top of the Eastern Conference in the regular season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s unreal performance was awarded with the 2018-19 NBA MVP Award on Monday night in New York. He received 78 of 101 first-place votes, beating out Rockets guard James Harden and Thunder forward Paul George for the top honor.

Antetokounmpo led the Milwaukee Bucks (60-22) to the NBA’s best regular season record in 2018-19 and their first division title since 2001 with a consistent dose of mind-boggling performances.

The 24-year-old forward’s statistics were unparalleled in the 2018-19 season, as he averaged a massive double-double with 27.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He shot an absurd 58% for the season.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that the Greece native also chipped in 5.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game? Antetokounmpo dominated on both ends of the court and put together one of the best seasons in recent NBA history.

Antetokounmpo is a deserving winner of the 2018-19 MVP trophy and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he adds more to his collection in the future.

Houston Rockets’ James Harden, New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis, and Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James are the finalists for 2017-18 regular season NBA MVP award, the league has announced on Wednesday.

James Harden, who is the overwhelming favorite to be named NBA MVP, has averaged 30.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 8.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game while leading his Rockets to 65 wins and number one seed in the Western Conference. Harden missed out on MVP award last season when he finished second in the voting behind Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook.

This will be the first time for Anthony Davis to be in the MVP finalists after he leads the Pelicans into the playoffs following the injury of DeMarcus Cousins. Davis ended the regular season averaging 28.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.

Finally, LeBron James is looking to get his fifth NBA MVP award, which would make him tied with Michael Jordan. James has played one of the best regular seasons in his career, averaging 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

NBA also announced finalists for other awards, with the winners set to be revealed on June 25. The winners for most of the awards will be voted on by a panel of 100 media members, while the fans will have the opportunity to determine award winners for the best dunk, assist, block and clutch shot of the year.

You can check out the finalists for other awards below.

Rookie of the Year: Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers), Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics), Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz)
Defensive Player of the Year: Anthony Davis (Pelicans), Joel Embiid (76ers), Rudy Gobert (Jazz)
Coach of the Year: Dwane Casey (Toronto Raptors), Quin Snyder (Jazz), Brad Stevens (Celtics)
