Another big name from Premier League is coming to Major League Soccer. Montreal Impact announced on Tuesday that the club acquired midfielder Victor Wanyama from Tottenham Hotspur.

According to the official announcement, Wanyama joins Impact on a free transfer. The Kenyan will fill in the club’s third Designated Player spot.

Wanyama comes to MLS after a disappointing first half of 2019/20 season in which he only made four appearances in all competitions.

“I’m really happy to join an exciting club like the Montreal Impact,” said Wanyama. “MLS continues to grow every season and I’m looking forward to bringing further awareness to this team, city and league across Africa.”

Victor Wanyama joins an ambitious Montreal Impact core that also features former Inter Milan midfielder Saphir Taider and former Barcelona forward Bojan Krkic. The club also previously brought in former Arsenal legend and Monaco manager Thierry Henry to help the team. Impact hopes this overhaul will bring them their first playoff appearance since 2016.

Wanyama played in Belgium and Scotland before coming to Premier League and signing with Southampton. After several seasons of impressive showing with the club, he was a subject of a $14 million transfer that landed him with Tottenham in 2016.

Although he was a regular part of the team’s rotation in his first few years with Tottenham, Wanyama saw his minutes diminish in recent seasons. He played 97 games for the club, scoring seven goals.

One of the biggest legends in recent soccer memory has a new gig as the head coach of Major League Soccer’s Montreal Impact, the second coaching job in his career.

Thierry Henry, the Arsenal legend who became one of the faces of the game internationally in the 2000s, was named Impact’s next head coach on Thursday morning.

This is Henry’s first job since being unceremoniously fired from his first gig coaching AS Monaco in France’s Ligue 1, where he managed only 4 wins in 20 matches.

Despite his errant first step into the world of coaching, Montreal felt confident enough in the 42-year-old’s abilities and knowledge to give him a two-year contract with an option for the 2022 season. Henry will be tasked with making a contender out of the Impact, which finished in 18th place in the MLS this season and hasn’t qualified for the playoffs since 2016.

This new job isn’t the France native’s first foray into the world of North American soccer. The last four seasons of Henry’s career were spent with the New York Red Bulls, where he became one of the faces of the nascent league.

Henry will take over as Impact’s new coach immediately and will be on the sidelines for the team in March for the new season’s first match.

Montreal Impact’s front office decided they need a fresh approach in their hunt to claim MLS Eastern Conference playoff spot this season. The team announced on Thursday that they have fired head coach Remi Garde and replaced him with Wilmer Cabrera.

Garde’s firing comes after Impact only managed to win one out of their eight games. He will leave Montreal with 24-29-8 record.

Cabrera, on the other hand, joins Impact after he recently parted ways with Houston Dynamo. The 51-year-old Colombian spent three and a half years with Dynamo, leading them to U.S. Open Cup win in 2018.

“Because I have so much respect for Remi as a person and as a professional, it was a very difficult decision to make and it was well thought, but our latest series of failures in the past couple of months and the way the team acts on the field led to that change,” said Impact president and CEO Kevin Gilmore in a statement. “We hope to bring back confidence to this group of players for the last stretch of the season, to get a playoff spot and to perform in the Canadian Championship final.”

Remi Garde joined Montreal Impact in November 2017, after he previously served as a manager with Ligue 1 powerhouse Lyon and Premier League side Aston Villa. Garde had a semi-successful first season with Impact, missing out on the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Although they recently brought in Finnish midfielder Lassi Lappalainen, Montreal Impact are keen to make more roster additions before the MLS secondary transfer window closes. As it turns out, one of those additions could easily be former Barcelona wonderkid Bojan Krkic.

According to influential Spanish outlet MARCA, Krkic is set to join Impact in the coming days and is keen to bring his talents to MLS. Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio adds that the 28-year-old forward met with club officials in Bologna and the two sides are “close to finalizing the deal.”

Krkic is currently a free agent after he negotiated to be released from his contract with Stoke City. He attracted interest from several clubs from Spain, including Real Mallorca and Granada, but he reportedly prefers a move to Montreal, which he sees as an opportunity to revive his career.

Bojan Krkic started his professional career with Barcelona and was considered one of the most talented Spanish soccer players of his generation early on. He was even dubbed as “new Messi” and was expected to become one of the team’s cornerstones.

Although he put in some solid performances in his first few seasons as a pro, Krkic failed to meet the high expectations. This resulted in Barca moving on from him and led to stints with Roma, Milan, and Ajax before he eventually landed with Stoke City.

Montreal Impact decided to use the MLS trade deadline to the fullest, completing several roster moves. The biggest name to join Impact is undoubtedly full-back Bacary Sagna, who comes as a free agent. Sagna, who previously played for Arsenal and Manchester City, signed a two year deal with the second year being optional.

I’m very happy of Bacary’s arrival,” – said Impact head coach Remi Garde in a statement. “He’s a player with a great career who’s still very motivated to come and help the Impact defy its end-of-season challenge. His personality, experience, and overall game will be a plus for our team.

At one point of his career, Bacary Sagna was considered one of the best right back in soccer. But after he decided to make a switch from Arsenal to Man City, he failed to continue with the same kind of performances. After three years, in which he didn’t receive much playing time, Sagna left England and signed with Seria A side Benevento in early 2018. He played 13 games in Italy and scored one goal.

Besides bringing in Bacary Sagna, Montreal Impact also traded forward Dominic Oduro to the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for Quincy Amarikwa. The impact wasn’t done at that point and acquired the rights to midfielder Micheal Azira from Colorado Rapids to conclude an eventful day.

Montreal Impact currently finds itself at the fifth place in the Eastern Conference with nine wins, 13 defeats alongside two ties. Their next game is an away clash against the Real Salt Lake.

After their starting center back Zakaria Diallo tore his Achilles tendon last week, MLS side Montreal Impact reacted swiftly and signed France international Rod Fanni. Fanni, who was a free agent after being released by Olympique de Marseille, signed a deal until June 30, 2018. In case the 36-year-old performs at a high level, Impact can extend the deal until the end of 2018 MLS season.

His arrival will allow us to fill the gap left by Zakaria Diallo’s injury,” – said Impact head coach Rémi Garde. “Rod will strengthen our defensive corps while bringing his extensive experience to the group. I appreciated his swiftness in positively answering our request and his desire to take part in our project as soon as he was released from his contract with Marseille. I am certain that his contribution will be important for our upcoming games.

Rod Fanni spent most of his career in France, where he played for clubs like Nice, Rennes, and Marseille. After short spells in Qatar and England, he returned to Marseille in 2016. After failing to make an appearance in the first half of 2017-18, the team terminated his contract in January 2018.

If I’m here right now, it’s largely thanks to Mister Garde,” – said Fanni upon joining Impact. “We spent years in the same league, so we know each other quite well already. Our first contact was way before the unfortunate injury to Zakaria Diallo. I was already motivated to come here, and the club wanted me to join the Impact as well. I hope to give my best and use my experience to help this project moving forward.
