Egypt star Mohamed Salah is set to miss his team’s next two matches at the African Cup of Nations after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw with Guyana on Thursday, the Egyptian Federation confirmed.

“The x-rays that Egyptian national team captain Salah underwent showed that he suffered a strain in the posterior muscle, and he will miss the team’s next two matches at the AFCON — against Cape Verde, and then the Round of 16 match in the event of qualification,” The Egyptian Federation announced.

While things looked bad for Salah as he walked off the pitch during Thursday’s game, one positive sign was that he was able to do so unassisted. Egypt head coach Rui VitΓ³ria expressed optimism that Salah would be able to return during the latter stages of the tournament. Following 2-2 draws with both Mozambique and Ghana, victory against Cape Verde Islands on Monday night will guarantee Egypt safe passage to the knockout stages of the competition.

Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah wouldn’t mind if he spent the remainder of his professional carrier at Anfield. But he also knows that this isn’t just his decision to make.

Salah and Liverpool have been engaged in contract negotiations for a while but have yet to find some common ground.

“If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career. But I can’t say much about that, it’s not in my hands,” Salah said in a recent chat with Sky Sports.

Salah, who has two years left on his deal, explained that it would make him “sad” if he ever had to play against Liverpool.

“It’s hard, I don’t want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad… but let’s see what will happen in the future,” he added.

In case that Salah and Liverpool can’t agree, several clubs are waiting to make a run for the 29-year-old Egyptian. One of them is Real Madrid, who would be reportedly interested in sending Eden Hazard alongside an additional fee to Liverpool for Salah.

Salah has played 214 games and scored 137 goals with 51 assists since arriving in Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017. He helped the club win multiple trophies during that time, including the Premier League title and UEFA Champions League trophy.

Egypt international and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was named African Player of the Year on Tuesday at the CAF Awards held in Dakar, Senegal. This is the second consecutive time Salah wins the award, having claimed the honors in 2018 as well. He was up against his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Mohamed Salah also became the fourth player to get back to back African Player of the Year awards, after El Hadji Diouf, Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Toure managed to achieve the same feat.

“I have dreamt of winning this award since I was a child and now I have done so twice in a row,” Salah said.

Mohamed Salah played phenomenally in 2018, scoring 32 goals in 2017-18 season in Premier League, which is a record since the 38-games format was instated. Salah also helped Liverpool reach the fourth spot in the national competition and propelled his team to Champions League Finale. Salah added two goals at the 2018 World Cup for his national team.

After having a slow start in 2018-19 season, Mohamed Salah bounced back in the last couple of months and has managed to score 13 goals in Premier League while adding three more in the Champions League.
