Egypt star Mohamed Salah is set to miss his team’s next two matches at the African Cup of Nations after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw with Guyana on Thursday, the Egyptian Federation confirmed.

“The x-rays that Egyptian national team captain Salah underwent showed that he suffered a strain in the posterior muscle, and he will miss the team’s next two matches at the AFCON — against Cape Verde, and then the Round of 16 match in the event of qualification,” The Egyptian Federation announced.

While things looked bad for Salah as he walked off the pitch during Thursday’s game, one positive sign was that he was able to do so unassisted. Egypt head coach Rui Vitória expressed optimism that Salah would be able to return during the latter stages of the tournament. Following 2-2 draws with both Mozambique and Ghana, victory against Cape Verde Islands on Monday night will guarantee Egypt safe passage to the knockout stages of the competition.
