Despite falling short of winning a title with Liverpool, star forward Mohamed Salah was still considered the best player in the Premier League in 2021-22. As a result, Salah received the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award on Thursday.

Salah finished the campaign as a joint top scorer of the league with 23 goals while also adding 13 assists. His contributions helped Liverpool finish just two points short of champions Manchester City on the standings.

“It’s a great honour to win a trophy, individual or collective, and this one is big so, very happy and very proud of that,” Salah, who already had one PFA Player of the Year honor on his resume, said in a statement.

Salah also highlights the PFA Premier League Team of the Year selection, which is mostly comprised of Liverpool and Man City players. The only outsiders are Manchester United’s forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Chelsea’s defender Antonio Rudiger.

PFA announced the recipients of other annual awards on Thursday as well. Man City’s Phil Foden got the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award, making him only the fifth player to get this honor twice in a row. Finally, manager Roy Hodgson, who last served as the boss of Watford, was named the recipient of the 2022 PFA Merit Award.

Mohamed Salah only needed 55 seconds to score in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against FC Midtjylland on Wednesday night. This was not only the fastest goal Liverpool had ever scored in the UEFA Champions League, but it also meant that Salah is now the club’s all-time leading scorer in this particular competition.

The goal came after one of Midtjylland’s players made a mistake and sent a short ball back to his own half. Salah was ready for this and managed to get to it first, emerging alone in front of Jesper Hansen and delivering a classy finish.

Salah now has 22 goals in Liverpool’s jersey in the UCL, which was enough to surpass club legend Steven Gerrard.

“It’s a great feeling to be the top scorer for the club, it’s something I’m proud of,” said Salah in a post-game press conference. “I need to keep going with that, score more goals, make the gap bigger between me and the others! I’m trying all the time to score goals to help the team to win games.”

This is the second consecutive time Salah wins the award, having claimed the honors in 2018 as well. He was up against his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Mohamed Salah also became the fourth player to get back to back African Player of the Year awards, after El Hadji Diouf, Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Toure managed to achieve the same feat.
