The New York Jets have just made a significant addition to their offense, signing former Los Angeles Chargers wideout Mike Williams to a one-year deal. Reportedly, Williams will earn up to $15 million in 2024.

After being released by the Chargers, Williams became a hot commodity and had a number of teams interested in him. He was scheduled to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers later this week, but the Jets didn’t want to take any risks and ended up signing him a contract on the spot.

During his introductory press conference, Williams said that he believes the Jets are a great fit for him, and he was also attracted by the opportunity to play with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“I just felt like it was a great fit for me. Aaron, I want to be able to play with him, pick his brain, learn from him,” said Williams. “The running game is pretty good. Defense is elite, so I just feel like we got a pretty good opportunity ahead of us.”

The Jets were interested in Williams during the 2022 offseason when he was set to become a free agent. However, the Chargers didn’t let that happen and signed him to a three-year, $60 million extension at the time.

Adding Williams addresses one of the biggest needs for the Jets ahead of next season. They have 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson as their No. 1 wideout but needed a proven No. 2 option after last season’s big free-agency acquisition Allen Lazard underperformed.

Mike Williams was the Chargers’ seventh overall pick in 2017. Over the course of his time in the NFL, he made 309 catches for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers confirmed that their wide receiver Mike Williams suffered an ACL injury that will rule him for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Williams got hurt in the third quarter of a dramatic 28-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. After receiving a pass, the 28-year-old player tried to gain extra yardage before having his foot planted in the ground and being tackled from behind.

Following a tackle, Williams remained on the ground and needed to be carted off the field. Up to that point, the veteran had already racked up seven catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.

“It’s the toughest kind of news. You know, Mike’s one of my favorites,” Chargers’ head coach Brandon Staley told reporters after the news was confirmed. “He’s one of our most important players, and he’s a guy who not only is one of our best players, but he sets the example I think from a team-building culture standpoint in terms of how you want to work. “

Williams has been one of the most reliable weapons for quarterback Justin Herbert when he’s on the field. He had a career year in 2021, making 76 catches for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns. Injuries limited him to 13 games last season, but he still managed to 63 receptions for 895 yards and four TDs.

With Williams out, the Chargers will likely hope that rookie wideout Quentin Johnston takes on a bigger role. The 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft only had five receptions for 26 yards so far in the season.

The Los Angeles Chargers managed to secure a new deal with their wideout Mike Williams and avoid losing the former Clemson standout in the free agency. Williams inked a three-year deal worth $60 million according to multiple reports.

The agreement will see Williams, who played 2021 on a fifth-year-option, earning $28 million in 2022 and getting $40 million in guarantees. He also becomes one of the highest-paid wide receivers on an annual basis.

Williams had a career year in 2021, becoming quarterback Justin Herbert’s most reliable target. He finished the season with 76 catches for 1,146 yards, both career-highs, while also adding nine touchdowns. Since entering the league as the Charger’s no. 7 pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Williams totaled 227 catches for 3,662 yards and 26 TDs.

By tying Williams to a long-term deal, the Chargers are making sure that Herbert has weapons he can trust, which will help maximize his potential in years to come. This was especially important after the heartbreaking end of the 2021 season that saw the LA miss out on playoffs in the last week.

The Chargers are not done yet, having several more key free agents they will attempt to bring back. The list includes linebacker Kyzir White, pass rusher Uchenna Nwosu, and guard Michael Schofield.

LA Chargers might have to kick off the 2020 NFL season without Mike Williams. According to multiple reports, Williams suffered a shoulder sprain and is currently considered “week-to-week.”

Williams reportedly got injured on practice when he attempted a diving catch and landed awkwardly on his shoulder. The first test showed that the 25-year-old wideout won’t need surgery while Chargers remain “optimistic” that he’ll be able to return by Week 1 game against Cincinnati Bengals on September 13th.

Mike Williams is coming off a breakthrough 2019 season when he showed that the Chargers didn’t waste the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft on him. He put up career-highs all across the board, finishing the year with 49 receptions for 1,001 and two touchdowns, and making up one of the most dangerous WR duos in NFL with Keenan Allen.

Chargers expect Williams to have a crucial role in 2020 as well, especially since they look continuity on offense with a new quarterback under center.  The team previously parted ways with Pro Bowler Philip Rivers, with veteran Tyrod Taylor expected to fill the starter role this season.

In his two seasons with Los Angeles Chargers, wideout Mike Williams didn’t quite justify the seventh overall pick that the team spent on him in 2017. But as he is entering his third season in NFL, Williams is looking to “step up” in 2019 as he will receive more room now that Tyrell Williams left to join Oakland Raiders.

“We lost a big weapon in Tyrell [Williams to the Raiders, so] a lot of people in the room have to step up,” – Williams told reporters on Monday. “I feel like me being the player that I am, I feel like I can do that… I feel like the role is going to change. I feel I’m going to get a lot more opportunities than I did last year. A lot more balls coming my way. I’m looking forward to it.”

Although Williams was inconsistent in these past two years, the 24-year-old showed flashes of brilliance, especially during big games. He was efficient on first downs and managed to catch 83.7 percent of passes that were targeted to him. His NFL career totals include 54 receptions, for 759 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“Well, this is my third year going into the offense,” – he adds. “I’m a lot more confident coming out here and playing. My role is going to expand with Tyrell leaving. I’m looking forward to that. I’m ready to make some plays this upcoming season.”
