It appears that former light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. is second-guessing his decision to face boxing legend Mike Tyson in an exhibition fight later this year. Speaking about the fight in a recent interview with Sports Insider, Jones said that he “made a mistake” when he accepted the bout.

Jones and Tyson were originally scheduled to fight in September, but the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic made the promotors to postpone the fight. The two are now set to meet in the ring on 28th November, with the organizers hoping that a later date will enable them to have a larger audience at the event.

And while this means that the fighters will have extra time to prepare, it also made Jones think more about what he’s getting himself into.

“He’s still Mike Tyson. He’s still one of the strongest, most explosive people who ever touched a boxing ring,” said Jones. “If anything, I made a mistake going in with him. He’s the bigger guy. He’s the explosive guy.”

It didn’t help that Tyson seems to take this fight seriously, despite the fact that its an exhibition duel that should be physical as regular boxing bouts.

“We’re throwing punches at each other. This is going to be my definition of fun … broken eye sockets, broken jaw, broken rib. That’s fun to me,” said Tyson recently.

Over the course of his career, Roy Jones Jr. had 75 fights and compiled a 66-9 record, including 47 wins by knockout. He retired in 2018 after a win against Scott Sigmon.

Mike Tyson, on the other hand, has a 50-6 record and 44 wins by a knockout. His last fight was a loss against Kevin McBride in 2005.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson recently posted several of his workout videos on social media and surprised the internet with his impressive conditioning. Rumors about Tyson’s comeback started circling almost immediately, and the 54-year-old boxer reportedly became intrigued by the idea after an overwhelmingly positive response. However, it appears that it will need a special offer for Iron Mike to come out of retirement.

Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship president David Feldman recently had a chat with The Ring and told the magazine that he offered $20 million to Tyson for a single fight. However, they were turned down.

“We offered Tyson $20 million and some additional benefits, but he turned it down,” said Feldman. “Who knows what’s going to happen with Mike Tyson?”

The Ring reached out to Tyson’s representatives for the other side of the story, but haven’t heard back. However, sources close to Tyson revealed that the boxer isn’t interested in bare-knuckles fighting and would only consider standard boxing.

There were several reports about Tyson’s potential opponents if he ends up coming back. The most intriguing is the trilogy against Evander Holyfield. The two had a couple of fights in the ’90s, with Holyfield winning both bouts.

As incredible as it may sound like, at some point there was a chance for us to see Tyson vs. Tyson. Current WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury recently told the media that he was offered a chance to fight legendary boxer Mike Tyson in an exhibition match a while ago.

Although he has not been in the ring since 2005, there is an increasing chatter that the 53-year-old Tyson is willing to fight again thanks to a number of social media videos that showed him fiercely working out. It looks like some promoter caught his comeback intention early on and immediately tried to arrange a spectacle.

“I did get a phone call with a chance to fight Mike Tyson, and I was like, ‘What?,'” said Fury in a chat with BT Sport. “I had a phone call saying, ‘Would you like to fight Mike Tyson in an exhibition fight?’ I was like, ‘Hell yeah!'”

Unfortunately, the fight of two Tysons never materialized. According to Fury, the talks never got past that phone call.

Although it is unlikely for Mike Tyson to fight Fury, several other opponents have been mentioned as an option. As Fury points out, most enticing would be the third fight against Evander Holyfield.  In the previous two fights, which took place in 1996 and 1997, Holyfield was victorious.

What do Bob Marley, Lil Wayne, and the 1997 Sports Illustrated cover of Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield’s ear off all have in common?

If you guessed they are tattooed on New York Giant wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.’s thigh, then congratulations, you are correct! Look around in professional sports and it is obvious that many of these athletes love their ink. Most athletes commemorate their sport, honor their family, or celebrate a passion with their tattoos.

Inspiration can come in many forms, of course, but some athletes have the weirdest muses. Like OBJ, these big-name athletes chose body art that leaves us scratching our heads…

Chris Andersens Free Bird Tattoo

Instagram

Andersen takes his nickname “Birdman” and ink very seriously. The Denver Nugget center has quite an elaborate and impressive body art collection, but his multi color “Free Bird” neck tattoo manages to stand out above all the rest.

Regardless, all of Andersen’s over-the-top ink fits the NBA champ’s image. A few awkward looks or laughs will not phase this big man.

Shawne Merriman’s Lights Out Tattoo

Instagram

Merriman is another athlete that takes his nickname “Lights Out” quite literally. He built an off-the-field brand around the moniker and even created paraphernalia to go with it that looks pretty sweet.

The tattoo on his right forearm that honors the nickname is not so cool, though. Taking a very direct approach to his ink, Merriman’s tattoo of a light switch and the generic hand flipping the switch is the definition of captain obvious.

 Stephon Marbury’s Starbury Logo Tattoo

Instagram

Sticking with the theme of brand tattoos, former Knick Stephon Marbury immortalized his apparel brand Starbury by getting the logo tattooed on the side of his head. While the tattoo is fairly small and tame, the placement is just weird.

Since leaving the NBA in 2009, though, Marbury’s career and shoe line have taken off in China. Guess all publicity is good publicity!

Mike Tyson’s Tribal Face Tattoo

Flickr

Tyson almost broke the internet when he got a tribal tattoo on the left side of his face. The standout ink starts at his temple and stretches down to his cheek and spans the full width of his eye socket on the top and bottom.

It is a large piece of ink for a face—even Mike’s. The media went crazy when the heavyweight champ got the tattoo in 2003. Since then, the tattoo has been the butt of many jokes, but Tyson does not regret getting the face ink.

In a 2016 interview with Sports Illustrated’s Jon Wertheim, Tyson said: “a lot of stuff happened out of this tattoo, a lot of good stuff.”

Odell Beckham Jr.’s Celebrity Sleeve

Instagram

Odell Beckham Jr. apparently really loves celebrities. The Giant wide receiver has a unique leg sleeve tattoo that includes large face portraits of Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and Muhammed Ali, along with Bob Marley and fellow New Orleans native Lil Wayne. The same sleeve also depicts the 1997 Sports Illustrated cover of Mike Tyson biting off Evander Holyfield’s ear.

Who knows why Beckham is into such bizarre ink? Lucky for him, the work is at least good.

Evander Holyfield once said that he never had a plan. That might have been the farthest thing from the truth! In actuality, few athletes can rival Holyfield’s incredible training regimen, work ethic, or his inspiring story.

Holyfield had somewhat of a reputation as a “light heavyweight,” but he prevailed in countless bouts due to his training strategies.

A Commitment To Training

His commitment to training and preparation wasn’t always important to him, but it was something he learned to value after years of experience in the boxing world. “Life is about knowledge. Knowledge is power,” he said. “I didn’t have the knowledge when I was young… now I’m the oldest one in the game.”

Wikipedia

In a 1988 interview, Holyfield’s training regimen for going from cruiserweight to heavyweight was revealed. The strategy included three weekly two-hour strength training sessions that focused on free weights.

His regimen also included four to five meals a day with high-protein foods as well as complex carbs. Then, after a few hours of rest, Holyfield would do his boxing drills, eat another big meal, rest some more, and end the day with cardio and conditioning work.

Started From A Tough Upbringing

Holyfield is an inspiring story, as he came from a poor upbringing in a crime-ridden neighborhood of Atlanta. His mother told him that when you’re poor, you have to have something to show people—something you can prove yourself with.

With those words in mind, Holyfield went on to become a boxing legend and win multiple cruiserweight and heavyweight titles, as well as a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympic Games.

“I have to have faith, faith in my abilities,” said Holyfield. “This is how I win.”

Flickr

Holyfield takes it personally when people say that athletes have an early expiration date. While many commentators say an athlete hits their prime at 30 years old, he continued boxing until he officially retired at 52. He took great pride that he maintained his abilities for so long.

He also believes that if you really take care of yourself, you can have a much longer career. His mother was a treasure trove of good advice, and she told him that they key to longevity was to avoid burning the candle at both ends. Ample rest and recovery were crucial to Holyfield’s lengthy career.

The Mike Tyson Incident

Holyfield had just returned from a professional hiatus due to health concerns when he was scheduled to fight Mike Tyson. It was a highly anticipated fight, but the tone of the story changed when Tyson unexpectedly bit Holyfield’s ear twice during the fight. The second time Tyson bit him, he actually took a piece of Holyfield’s ear off.

YouTube

Tyson was removed from the fight and lost due to disqualification, and the incident went on to spread through global news like wildfire.

Holyfield handled that infamous incident professionally and courteously. As a man widely known for his faith, he claims that it was an inspirational experience and that it gave him an opportunity to better practice forgiveness.
