Michael Jordan, arguably the best basketball player of all time, has ended his time as an NBA team owner. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jordan has agreed to sell his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets to an ownership group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall.

Plotkin, a minority owner with the Hornets, and Schnall, a minority owner with the Atlanta Hawks, agreed to pay $3 billion to take over the control of the team. Jordan will reportedly keep a minor stake in the franchise.

Jordan, who originally bought the Hornets in 2010 for $275 million, put the franchise on sale earlier this year. He previously sold a significant minority stake in the team to a group that included Plotkin and hedge fund manager Daniel Sundheim back in 2020.

Under Jordan’s ownership, the Charlotte Hornets were consistently one of the worst teams in the NBA. They only made the playoffs twice, being eliminated in the first round both times. Their best regular-season finish was sixth seed in Eastern Conference in 2015–16.

The Hornets, however, might be positioned to have a bright future. They have a young star in point guard LaMelo Ball and hold the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are among the most iconic duos in the history of the NBA League. Together, they won six NBA titles and had two three-peats as members of the Chicago Bulls. But it is safe to say there is no love lost between the former teammates.

Pippen has long been critical of Jordan, taking offense at the fact that Jordan is credited with leading the Bulls to the titles and him being portrayed as his sidekick. Pippen previously made comments in which he took aim at Jordan on several occasions and has recently doubled down on them during his appearance on Gimme the hot sauce! podcast.

When asked about who should be considered the greatest player of all time (GOAT) by host Stacey King, Pippen said he believes basketball is a team sport. He mentioned several players that are up for discussion and then focused on Jordan, who is currently considered the basketball GOAT by the majority of fans.

Pippen said that Jordan shouldn’t be in the conversation because he was a “horrible player” before the two teamed up.

“I’ve seen Michael Jordan play before I came to play with the Bulls,” Pippen said. “He was a horrible player. He was horrible to play with. He was all 1-on-1. He was shooting bad shots. And all of a sudden, we become a team, and we start winning.”

Although not a lot of people will share Pippen’s opinion, it is true that Michael Jordan’s first three seasons with the Bulls didn’t amount to a lot of winning. He failed to get out of the first round in NBA playoffs during that period, and Chicago only started making deep playoff runs when Pippen landed with the franchise in 1987–88.

However, some would argue that it was actually Phil Jackson who got it all together, as the legendary coach won the NBA title in his second season at the helm before winning five more in the next seven years.

It is safe to say that the conversation about the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) in basketball predominantly revolves around Chicago Bulls’ legend Michael Jordan and Los Angeles Lakers’ star LeBron James. There are often new takes on this never-ending debate, and a particularly interesting one recently came from retired NBA player Charles Oakley.

Oakley recently made an appearance on the KG Certified podcast, hosted by Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett. At one point, he was asked about how he sees the GOAT conversation and which player has the edge, in his opinion.

Not wanting to get dragged into the debate, Oakley decided to offer a different take. He simply stated that if he could choose, he would rather play with James since he would get the ball more often.

“They ask me, who would you rather play with LeBron or Mike?” Oakley said. “I said LeBron but Mike is my best friend. Mike ain’t passing me the ball. He don’t care if I get a shot today or tomorrow. But, you know, he’s got to be Mike.”

This makes sense, considering that Jordan and James are two different players. Jordan was more of a pure scorer who preferred to take the opponents himself. James, on the other hand, looks to involve his teammates more.

Of course, Oakley knows what he is talking about as he played with Jordan over the course of his 19 years in the NBA. The two were teammates during Jordan’s early days with the Bulls and later reunited with the Washington Wizards.

Michael Jordan’s reign as the owner of the Charlotte Hornets might soon come to an end. Jordan is reportedly engaged in talks to sell a majority stake in the franchise to a group led by businessman Gabe Plotkin, who already has a minority stake in Hornets, and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnal.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, while the deal is not imminent, there is enough traction for all parties to be optimistic about getting it over the finishing line. If the sale is completed, Plotkin and Schnal will take over as Hornets’ governors, while Jordan will keep a minority stake in the team.

Jordan, widely considered the best basketball player in the history of the sport, bought a minority stake in the franchise back in 2006, becoming the second-largest shareholder at the time. Four years later, the Hall of Famer became the Hornets’ majority owner, purchasing the team for $275 million.

During Jordan’s time as the owner, the Hornets made three playoff appearances, losing in the First Round each time. Their best regular-season result in the East during that time was the sixth seed in 2015–16.

The Hornets are currently sitting at No. 14 on the Eastern Conference standings with a 22-49 record. If they remain there, it will mark the team’s worst finish in the past 10 years.

The Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan is often viewed as the best player in the history of the NBA. And the league appears to be agreeing.

The NBA just announced that its annual MVP award, given to the most valuable player in a given season, will be named after Jordan. The announcement was followed by the unveiling of the redesigned trophy.

Jordan won five MVP awards in his career, trailing only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s six MVP honors. He led the Bulls to six NBA championships and made the All-Star team 14 times. He was also the scoring leader 10 times and had an NBA Defensive Player of the Year award on his resume as well.

The first recipient of the new Michael Jordan MVP trophy will be the Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic. The NBA decided to award the trophy retroactively to Jokic for his MVP campaign in the 2021-22 season.

Besides Michael Jordan, the league decided to honor a number of other iconic NBA players. The Defensive Player of the Year award will be named after Houston Rockets’ great Hakeem Olajuwon, while the Rookie of the Year trophy will carry the name of Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain.

John Havlicek, the eight-time NBA title winner with the Boston Celtics, will lend its name to the Sixth Man of the Year trophy, while the Most Improved Player of the Year award will now carry the name of one of the professional basketball pioneers George Mikan.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that basketball legend Michael Jordan never considered a coaching gig since he ended his NBA career. Jordan not only has his own team in the NBA, but he also doesn’t need more validation in the world of sports as he is still considered the best player in the history of the game.

But, as it turns out, there is one more reason why Jordan never attempted to pass his knowledge in a coaching role. In a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado, Jordan explained that he simply doesn’t have the patience to be a coach.

“I have no patience for coaching,” said Jordan. “My biggest problem from a competitive standpoint is the focus of today’s athlete and the focus where I saw the game, how I pursued the game—it changes, and it’s totally different.”

According to Jordan, the approach to basketball drastically changed since he walked out, and younger players have a different perception of the game than he did.

“For me to ask an individual to focus on the game the way I played the game, in some ways would be unfair for that kid that would have to endure that,” he added. “If he didn’t do it, there is no telling where my emotions would be. I don’t think I would have the patience for it.”

You can check out the full interview below.

Since retiring in 2003, Jordan has been mostly present in basketball as the owner of the Charlotte Hornets. He bought a minority stake in the franchise in 2006 before becoming a majority owner in 2010.

The debate about the greatest basketball player of all time is alive and well, with Detroit Pistons great Bill Lambier recently giving his take on the matter. According to Lambier, LeBron James should be considered the “GOAT” and not Michael Jordan.

Lambier recently made an appearance on ESPN’s First Take, where he talked about who deserves the title of the best basketball player of all time. While he recognized that

“I’m very vocal on this. I think LeBron is the best player who has ever played the game,” said Laimbeer. “He’s 6-foot-8, 285 pounds, runs like the wind, jumps out of the gym. … At the end of the day, I firmly believe he’s the best basketball player in the history of the game.”

Lambier acknowledged that Jordan is a more accomplished player, but thinks that doesn’t make him better than James.

“Now if you go by championships, obviously Michael Jordan has more championships. But I think LeBron in any generation would be doing what he’s doing right now all these years,” he added.

Bill Lambier is well familiar with Michael Jordan’s game, as he and the “Bad Boys” Pistons knocked out Jordan and Chicago Bulls three straight times in the playoffs between 1987 and 1990. In two out of those three seasons, Detroit went on to win the NBA title.

Michael Jordan has pledged $2 million in aid of Hurricane Florence victims. The Charlotte Hornets chairman will donate $1 million to the American Red Cross and another $1 million to the Carolina Hurricane Florence Response fund.

Last Friday, Jordan expressed his empathy for the victims of Hurricane Florence, which tore through his hometown town of North Carolina.

“It’s truly devastating for me to see the damage that Hurricane Florence is doing to my beloved home state of North Carolina and to the surrounding areas,” the Chicago Bulls legend said. “The recovery effort will be massive, and it will take a long time to repair the damage and for families to get back on their feet.”

In partnership with NBA Care, the Hornets set up a website for fans and well-wishers to join Jordan in his campaign.

“Together with the NBA, we have launched a platform to aid those most impacted. Please join me, the Hornets organization and the NBA and the NBA and to donate to one of the local organizations assisting in the relief and recovery efforts.”

The funds will be channels to relief efforts through the Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, Direct Relief and the United Way of Central Carolinas.

While his fame peaked in Chicago with the Bulls, Jordan’s career was greatly influenced by North Carolina, where he grew up. Hurricane Florence has so far killed 33 deaths as per the Weather Channel and affected 300,000 people.

While everyone is getting excited about the upcoming NBA season, the best basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan doesn’t like where the league is heading. Specifically, he doesn’t like the fact that we find ourselves in the super-team era, where NBA superstars join forces in an attempt to win an NBA Championship. Jordan shared his thoughts on the matter in an interview with Cigar Aficionado magazine.

I think it’s going to hurt the overall aspect of the league from a competitive standpoint,” – Jordan said in the interview. “You’re going to have one or two teams that are going to be great, and another 28 teams that are going to be garbage. Or they’re going to have a tough time surviving in the business environment.

It is strange to see Michael Jordan taking this stance since he was a member of a superteam himself. His Chicago Bulls were one of the most dominant and star-filled teams in the history of basketball. Jordan’s attitude towards superteams may be traced to the fact that he currently owns the Charlotte Hornets. In the recent years, Jordan’s team had troubles competing and would promptly exit the playoffs even if it managed to get there.

Although NBA super-teams were always a thing, you could say that the decision of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh to bring their talents to Miami and become members of the Heat, really started the trend. When James won his first NBA ring, other players saw that there is an upside to joining forces. This brought us to 2017 and the fact that you have to have at least 2 superstars if you want to compete for the playoffs. In case you want to dream championship, think no less than 3 although 4 would be ideal. This is an excellent thing for the casual NBA fans, but it may not be for the sport in general.

We all know it can be very hard to say goodbye to something you love. That sentiment can be even more true for athletes.

Many athletes leave the game when they feel like they have nothing left to give, but some top athletes realize they have more gas left in the tank after they retire. While some of these stellar players left the game in their prime, others seemed to be ageless wonders that could play forever.

Here are some of the biggest names in sports that walked away from the game only to hit the restart button on their careers and compete once again.

Brett Favre

Flickr

Favre talked about retirement for many years before saying farewell to a distinguished 16-year career with the Packers in March of 2008. That retirement only lasted one off season. The 11-time Pro Bowler returned to football in August of that same year as a New York Jet. He played with the Jets for one season before retiring again briefly in February of 2009 only to then sign with the Minnesota Vikings that August. Favre played for two more seasons with the Vikings before officially calling it quits in 2011.

Michael Jordan

Flickr

Jordan’s retirements were as infamous as his career. After leading the Bulls to three consecutive titles, the five-time MVP called it quits in 1993 to play baseball. He returned to the Bulls a year later and led the dynasty to a second three-peat before retiring again in 1998. The second retirement lasted a little bit longer, however Jordan returned to the game in 2001, this time with the Washington Wizards. He played two seasons in Washington before ending his career for good in 2003. Guess third time’s a charm.

Marshawn Lynch

Flickr

In 2015, Lynch shocked the NFL by announcing his retirement from the league via Twitter the same day as Super Bowl 50. Though he occasionally battled injury, Lynch was arguably at the height of his career. Lucky for Beastmode fans, his retirement was short-lived. The five-time pro bowler decided to return to the field in 2017 to play for his hometown team the Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders.

Jeff Gordon

Flickr

NASCAR gave driving legend Jeff Gordon a grand farewell tour in 2015 following an impressive 15-year racing career. Eight months after the touching departure, Gordon found himself once again behind the wheel for Hendrick Motorsports. He replaced Dale Earnhardt Jr. in July of 2016 when Earnhardt was sidelined with concussion-like symptoms for two months. His final race was in October of the same year at Martinsville.

Roger Clemens

Flickr

Clemens first walked away from baseball in 2003 to a standing ovation in Game 4 of the World Series as a New York Yankee. That retirement lasted less than a year. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner came returned to the mound that very next season to play for the Houston Astros. He threw for the Astros for three seasons before returning to the Yankees again in 2007. He retired from the majors officially that same year.
