The Miami Heat are getting younger at the point guard position. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Heat swapped veteran Kyle Lowry for point guard Terry Rozier in a trade with the Hornets.

Reportedly, the Heat will also send a first-round selection to Charlotte as part of the deal. The pick is lottery-protected in 2027 and unprotected in 2028.

Lowry hasn’t been on his usual level this season. While remaining engaged on defense, his averages were lowest since the 2009-10 campaign. In 37 games, Lowry has been averaging 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.

Meanwhile, Rozier is having a career year in 2023-24. He is averaging a career-high 23.2 points and 6.6 assists per game while adding 3.9 rebounds. The Heat likely expect him to instill their starting lineup with more energy while providing a much bigger punch on the offense compared to Lowry.

The Hornets are among the worst teams in the league, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that they are sellers as the NBA trade deadline approaches. According to reports, the team is looking to move several other players. This now includes Lowry, who will be either traded or let go via contract buyout.

The Miami Heat have handed coach Erik Spoelstra an eight-year contract extension worth a total of $120 million; the most committed money in a coaching deal in North American sporting history. Since becoming head coach of the Heat in 2008, the 53-year-old coach has become one of the most respected coaches in the NBA given the work he has done in his only head coaching role to date.

Expectations were high for Spoelstra after the then-assistant coach replaced Hall of Famer Pat Riley as the heat’s head coach. Despite having big shoes to fill, he didn’t disappoint, leading Miami to back-to-back NBA Championships in 2012 and 2013 and a total of six NBA Finals. Currently the second-highest-paid NBA coach on an annual basis behind Gregg Popovich at $19 million per season, sources have explained that the length of Spoelstra’s deal separates him from his peers.

Spoelstra has proven to be an effective coach during the ongoing season as well, with the Heat currently fifth in the Eastern Conference standings despite dealing with a long list of injuries to several key players. Miami next faces the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night before hosting the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

Miami Heat’s legend Udonis Haslem will have his No. 40 jersey retired by the franchise. The retirement ceremony will be held on January 19 at the halftime of the game against the Atlanta Hawks.

Haslem will become just the sixth player in Heat history to receive this honor. He will join Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade.

Haslem spent all of his 20 seasons in the NBA with the Heat. Only Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers) and Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks) spent as many or more years with the same franchise.

During his time with the Heat, Haslem won three NBA titles while serving as the team’s locker room leader. He retired after the 2022–23 NBA season, having averaged 7.5 points and 6.6 rebounds during his time as a pro.

Haslem remained with the Heat after his retirement and currently serves as the franchise’s vice president of basketball development.

“It’s about a great legacy, a Thank You moment that has been earned over 20 years of being an incredible championship player and, most importantly, the best leader,” said Heat’s president Pat Riley in a team-released statement. “He’s going to have his day, and I can’t wait to see his jersey hang in the rafters.”

The New York Knicks found themselves trailing 21 points late in the third quarter of Friday night’s game against the Miami Heat. But unlike some other Knicks teams in the past, this one wasn’t about to give up.

After Heat’s superstar Jimmy Butler converted a free throw to make it 83-62 with 3:40 left in the third quarter, the Knicks decided they had enough. Guard Immanuel Quickley made two three-pointers while the New York team collectively stepped up their defensive intensity to stop allowing easy points.

The fourth quarter saw a completely different Knicks team, as they outscored the Heat by 18 points to claim a 98-100 victory. Quickley scored 14 out of his 20 points during the comeback stretch while R.J. Barrett and Jalen Brunson contributed eight each.

“It’s a decision to mentally check out or not,” Quickley said after the game. “It’s a decision to keep fighting. It’s a decision to tell yourself, ‘You got to keep fighting,’ no matter what.

This was an important win for the Knicks, as it kept them alive in the NBA’s in-season tournament. They also got a bit of revenge on the Heat after Miami eliminated them in the second round of the 2023 NBA playoffs.

The Knicks are currently at No.6 in the Eastern Conference with a 9-6 record. The Heat are one spot ahead at 10-6.

Tyler Herro’s hot start of the 2023-24 NBA season has come to a disappointing halt. The Miami Heat’s shooting guard is dealing with an ankle sprain that will cause him to be sidelined for at least two weeks.

Herro has been playing some of his best basketball in the first couple of weeks of the new NBA campaign. He has been the Heat’s leading scorer, averaging 22.9 points per game while shooting a career-high 41.0% for three and adding 5.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

Herro got hurt late in the first quarter of Wednesday’s 108-102 win over the Memphis Grizzlies. The 23-year-old was driving to the basket when he stepped on Jaren Jackson Jr’s foot and rolled his ankle. He immediately went to the floor and was in obvious pain.

Speaking with the reporters after the game, Herro said that he immediately knew something was wrong.

“It was something I felt right when it happened,” Herro said via Miami Herald. “I felt it, and I kind of knew mentally. I heard some crunches and cracks in my ankle. I’m like, ‘Yeah, that will be it.’… It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to continue to work hard. I’ve been through this injury stuff before, and I’m just going to keep working.”

The Heat issued an update on Herro’s injury, saying it is a Grade 2 ankle sprain. Herro will spend the next 10 days in a walking boot and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

The Miami Heat is understandably disappointed that they failed in their pursuit of superstar guard Damian Lillard. However, there is one member of the organization who is “glad” things turned out that way.

Miami was Lillard’s preferred destination when the seven-time All-Star asked the Portland Trail Blazers to trade him back in July. However, the Trail Blazers were not enthusiastic about the Heat’s package, which centered on shooting guard Tyler Herro, and ended up making a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks instead.

When asked about the Heat’s attempts to trade him for Lillard, Herro said that things turned out great for him.

“I didn’t want to go to Portland, so I’m glad Portland didn’t want me,” Herro said in a chat with Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “I just don’t want to be in Portland. So it’s not personal with Portland, at all.”

Herro looks like he is going to stay in Miami for the time being. However, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Heat try to package him with some picks again if another star becomes available.

Tyler Herro entered the league as the 13th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He is averaging 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game as a pro while shooting 43.9% from behind the three-point line. Herro’s accolades in the NBA include the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 2022.

The Miami Heat are reportedly putting together a trade package they hope will land them All-Star point guard Damian Lillard.

According to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania, there hasn’t been much development in trade talks surrounding Lillard despite the player asking out of Portland several weeks ago. However, the Heat, who are Lillard’s preferred destination, already have an outline of what their offer will be.

The Heat are willing to include players on expiring contracts, one of their young players, and three to four first-rounders. Also, the trade would likely involve 2022’s NBA Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro moving to a third team and potential deal sweeteners like a couple of second-round selections and pick swaps.

Damian Lillard spent all of his 11 years as a pro with the Trail Blazers. During his time with the franchise, Lillard was an All-Star seven times while being selected to the All-NBA First Team in 2018.

Lillard previously insisted that he wants to finish his career with the Blazers and hopes to bring a championship to the franchise. However, after the team opted to use the No. 3 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft on Scoot Henderson instead of trading it for immediate help, Lillard decided it was time to continue his quest for an NBA title somewhere else.

The Denver Nuggets did their best to keep the Miami Heat from stealing Game 2 on Sunday night, but their best wasn’t enough. Just like many times this postseason, the Heat found something extra late in the game to rally to a win.

The Heat entered the fourth quarter with an eight-point deficit before orchestrating a comeback to get an important 111-108 away win and tie the NBA Finals series.

Miami’s win was a true team effort, with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo scoring 21 points each and Gabe Vincent finishing the game with 23 points. Max Strus and Duncan Robinson were also in double digits in points.

“Our guys are competitors,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after the game. “They love these kind of moments.”

The Nuggets had another big performance by their superstar Nikola Jokic, who had 41 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. However, he had little help from the rest of the team, especially on the defensive end of the ball.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Denver’s head coach Mike Malone called out his players for lack of effort.

“Let’s talk about effort,” Malone said. “I mean, this is the NBA Finals, and we’re talking about effort. That’s a huge concern of mine. You guys probably thought I was just making up some storyline after Game 1 when I said we didn’t play well. We didn’t play well. … This is not the preseason. This is not the regular season. This is the NBA Finals.”

The NBA Finals series now moves to Miami, with Game 3 being scheduled for Wednesday.

The Miami Heat didn’t allow the Boston Celtics to make history and become the first team in NBA history to return from 0-3 in a playoff series. Instead, they went to TD Garden for Game 7 and got a dominant 103-84 win that secured them a spot in NBA Finals.

The Heat made some history themselves, becoming just the second team to make the NBA Finals as the eighth seed, joining the New York Knicks did it in 1999. Miami now only have the Denver Nuggets standing in their way of winning the fourth championship in franchise history.

Miami saw another big performance from Jimmy Butler, who led the way with 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Caleb Martin joined in with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Butler deservingly took home the Larry Bird Eastern Conference Finals MVP award, having averaged 28.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 2.1 steals during the Heat’s playoff run.

“I know the work that we all put into it, so I know what we’re capable of. Nobody is satisfied,” Butler said after the game. “We haven’t done anything. We don’t play just to win the Eastern Conference; we play to win the whole thing.”

The Miami Heat are aiming to become the first eighth seed in NBA history to win the title. They finished as No. 7 in Eastern Conference at the end of the regular season and even lost their first Play-In game to the Atlanta Hawks. But what came after was nothing short of impressive.

Miami dealt with the Chicago Bulls to secure the eighth seed and then went to upset the favored Milwaukee Bucks in the first round. After they knocked out the New York Knicks in the East semis, many believed their journey ends against Boston. But the Heat once again rose up to the challenge and showed that the “Heat culture” is really something that can’t be quantified with statistics, odds, or probability.

The Boston Celtics are still in it. Facing the possibility of getting swept by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics rallied to a 116-99 win in Game 4 on Tuesday night and extended their postseason run for at least one more game.

The Celtics were led to the victory by their All-Star forward Jayson Tatum, who had 33 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Jaylen Brown added 17 points, and four more Boston players scored in double digits.

Boston showed remarkable resilience in Game 4. They had a sluggish first half and entered the third quarter down by nine. However, the Celtics refused to quit, embarking on an 18-0 run to take control of the game. Then they did enough to stop Miami from embarking on another of their signature fourth-quarter comebacks.

While the Celtics get to live another day, they will have to do something no one has ever done to reach the NBA Finals. No team in NBA playoffs history managed to win a series after facing a 3-0 deficit.

“We don’t really have a choice,” said the Celtics’ head coach Joe Mazzulla said. “It’s do-or-die. Got to stick together.”

What gives the Celtics some hope is that teams down 3-0 managed to tie the series three times before losing Game 7. New York Knicks did it against Rochester Royals (modern-day Sacramento Kings) in the 1951 NBA Finals, Denver Nuggets did it against the Utah Jazz in the 1994 Western Conference Second Round, and the Portland Trail Blazers did it against the Dallas Mavericks in the 2003 Western Conference First Round.
