The Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane exited his team’s 119-128 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night due to a left ankle sprain. Bane was injured during the third quarter when he stepped on Kawhi Leonard’s foot when attempting a drive, forcing him to leave the court and head to the locker room.

During the interval before the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies announced that Bane would not be returning to the game. Following the defeat, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins revealed that Bane was still being evaluated and that the team did not yet know the extent of the guard’s injury.

Averaging 24.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.4 assists across 36 games this season, Bane has been a key player for the Grizzlies. Morant suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder during a practice session with his team on Saturday, ruling him out of Sunday’s 115-121 win on the road against the Phoenix Suns. The Memphis Grizzlies have signed veteran center Bismack Biyombo, the team announced on Thursday. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, it was revealed that Biyombo signed a one-year contract worth $5 million deal with a guaranteed $1 million.

Selected seventh overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets (then known as Bobcats), Biyombo has played for Charlotte twice as well as the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, and Phoenix Suns.

During his 799 games and 324 starts in the NBA, the 31-year-old center has averaged 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks over the course of his career.

The Memphis Grizzlies will be without their starting center Steven Adams once the NBA postseason tips off. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Adams is dealing with a right knee and won’t be able to return to help the Grizzlies for their playoff push.

Adams was diagnosed with a PCL sprain in January and was initially set to miss around five weeks. Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke will be sidelined for the remainder of the season after he suffered a torn Achilles, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports reported to ESPN on Saturday. The 26-year-old player’s injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for the struggling Grizzlies team.

Clarke incurred his injury during the final few seconds of the first quarter of the Grizzlies’ 97-113 loss to the Denver Nuggets. He fell after missing a free throw, picking himself up and limping following his collapse. He was subsequently escorted to the locker room after proving unable to shift weight onto his left leg.

Labeled an “emotional” and “extremely tough” injury by his teammates, Clarke’s absence will be a major setback for the Grizzlies, with the team placing much importance on his impact from the bench. Clarke has averaged 10.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season.

In addition to Clarke’s injury, the Grizzlies will need to navigate a one-game ban that was handed to Dillon Brooks during the loss to the Nuggets. Brooks was handed the suspension due to making his 16th technical foul of the season.

26-year-old guard John Konchar has agreed to a three-year $19 million contract extension, his agent, George Langberg confirmed on Thursday. This agreement extends Konchar’s time with the team until the 2026-27 season.

Once awarded just a single scholarship offer and undrafted out of Purdue Fort Wayne, Konchar’s career earnings will now surge to $30 million as a result of this contract extension. In addition, he has successfully molded a career as a staple rotational player on the Grizzlies’ roster to help them secure the second-best regular-season record in the league.

Remaining undrafted out of the Summit League, Konchar was welcomed into Memphis’ set up in 2019, representing the Memphis Hustle of the G League. The 26-year-old then worked his way up the ranks and into the Memphis Grizzlies, playing 72 games for them a year ago, during which time he averaged career-high points, assists, and minutes.

Last season, Konchar shot 41% on 3-pointers, adding to his 51% overall. He and teammate Desmond Bane were the only members of the Grizzlies’ roster who were able to shoot 40% on three pointers when making at least 100 attempts.

The Memphis Grizzlies announced on Friday that their talented big-man Jaren Jackson Jr. had surgery earlier this week to address a stress fracture in his right foot. As a result, Jackson will be sidelined for four to six months.

According to the Grizzlies, Jackson is expected to make a full recovery.

This represents some unwelcoming news for the Grizzlies, who hoped to take another step forward in 2022-23 after reaching the Conference Semifinals this past season. Jackson was a major reason why Memphis got that far in the first place, emerging as one of the best defenders in the league.

The Michigan State had his most accomplished campaign as a pro in 2021-22 after struggling to stay healthy in previous seasons. Jackson averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and league-leading 2.3 blocks per game. He also received NBA All-Defensive First Team honors.

Jackson will most certainly miss the start of the new NBA season according to the current timeline. In the worst-case scenario, he might not make the court at all before 2024. The Memphis Grizzlies won’t rush their star point guard Ja Morant to get back on the court. According to the team’s head coach Taylor Jenkins, Morant will be sidelined for at least two more weeks due to soreness in his right knee.

Morant missed a week’s worth of action so far after hurting his knee in a 120-105 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on March 19. By shutting him down for two more weeks, the Grizzlies are looking to ensure that the 22-year-old All-Star makes a full recovery and is ready for the playoffs. 

“We expect him to make a full recovery before the playoffs, and we’re excited about that with two and a half weeks left in the season,” Jenkins told reporters on Thursday. “We’ll offload him early, then he’ll start reloading pretty soon here with that two weeks in mind to reevaluate.”

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Hernangomez is heading to the Boston Celtics in a trade that will see the Grizzlies receive guard duo Kris Dunn and Carsen Edwards. The deal also includes swapping second-round picks in 2026.

Hernangomez arrived in Memphis a couple of weeks ago as part of the trade that sent Patrick Beverley to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He always had a long shot of sticking with the Grizzlies considering the team was already well stacked at the position.

While the Grizzlies didn’t think Hernangomez could be of use on their team in the 2021-22 NBA season, he is expected to have a prominent role on the Celtics. Boston is short on options on power forward position, which opens an opportunity for the 25-year-old player to be a valuable contributor from the bench.

Hernangomez played 52 games with the Timberwolves last season, averaging 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He is a 35.1 percent career three-point shooter.
