Three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Melvin Ingram won’t be staying with the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2022 NFL season. Ingram is reportedly signing a deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Ingram started the last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers but was traded to the Chiefs for a sixth-rounder after a disappointing first half of the campaign. In Kansas City, the 33-year-old player rediscovered some of his past form and racked up 15 tackles, 1.0 sacks, and one forced fumble. He followed this up with 2.0 sacks and four QB hits in the playoffs.

Despite this production, Ingram wasn’t signed in the first wave of free agency. This prompted the Chiefs to place a $4.4 million unrestricted free agent tender on the veteran in early May. Thanks to the tender, Kansas City is now set to receive a compensatory pick.

The addition of Ingram will see Miami’s talented defense get already better. The young unit should benefit from his veteran experience and versatility, considering he can line up as either DE or linebacker.

Melvin Ingram spent the first nine years of his pro career with the Chargers, who took him in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. His career stats include 385 tackles, 51.0 sacks, and 15 forced fumbles. He also has 29 pass deflections.

The Kansas City Chiefs are having a disappointing start to the 2021 NFL season, with shaky defense being a major reason for their struggles. The Chiefs reportedly attempted to fix some of their issues by trading for Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Melvin Ingram.

According to NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala, Kansas City made an official trade offer to the Steelers for Ingram but had no success. Despite not using the 32-year-old all that much, Pittsburgh is believed to be reluctant to let him go to an AFC rival.

The player would reportedly welcome a trade as he is unhappy with his playing time with the Steelers. Ingram only started one game this season while playing 64 percent of the team’s snaps on defense. He has 10 tackles, one sack, and six QB hits in six appearances in 2021.

Melvin Ingram, who has three Pro Bowl appearances to his name, spent the first nine years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers. Ingram left the Chargers after his contract expired following the 2020 NFL season and agreed to a one-year deal with the Steelers. The Chiefs reportedly pursued him in the free agency, but he preferred to move to Pittsburgh.

Kansas City also missed out on several other targets in recent weeks. They were aggressively pursuing Whitney Mercilus after he was released by the Houston Texans, but the veteran linebacker opted to sign with the Green Bay Packers instead.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed free agent Pro Bowl defensive end Melvin Ingram to a one-year deal. The team is yet to make the news official, but Ingram himself confirmed the agreement in a chat with ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

“I just did the deal not too long ago and just got to the airport. It’s definitely a dope organization and environment; so I definitely feel like it’s the place for me,” Ingram told Anderson. He then added that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin played a big role in his decision.

Ingram is coming to Pittsburgh after spending the first nine years of his career with the LA Chargers. During that time, he racked up 360 tackles, 49 sacks, 108 QB hits, 14 forced fumbles, three interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

He is coming off a challenging 2020 campaign in which he struggled with a knee injury. The 32-year-old veteran only managed to suit up for seven games and failed to record a single sack for the first time in his pro career.

Melvin Ingram is expected to play an important part in the Steelers’ defense, especially after Bud Dupree left in free agency to join the Tennessee Titans. Ingram should be the primary backup on the left side and might even have a shot at the starting spot if 2020’s third-round pick Alex Highsmith doesn’t perform well.

The Los Angeles Chargers recently handed out a massive extension to defensive end Joey Bosa, but this might not be the end of their spending spree in 2020. According to NFL Network, Chargers’ Pro Bowl outside linebacker Melvin Ingram also wants a new deal, deciding to sit out team practices until he gets one.

Ingram is reportedly coming to Charger’s practices, but he isn’t participating in them. The 31-year-old OL is entering the last year of his four-year, $64-million deal in 2020.

Asked about Ingram, Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn didn’t want to comment on the issue and simply said it’s “company business.”

“I’m just gonna leave it at that because I don’t have to talk about it right now, you know what I mean?” said Lynn via LA Times. “Gotta lot of other things I gotta get done, and I don’t really want to spend a lot of time talking about that.”

Melvin Ingram spent his entire career with the Chargers, who drafted him 18th overall in 2012. Although he dealt with inconsistency and injuries during his first three seasons in the league, Ingram established himself as a reliable piece in the team’s defense since then.

Since 2015, Ingram only missed three games while racking up 43.0 sacks and 272 tackles. He also made the Pro Bowl each season in the past three years.
