The Baltimore Ravens had an eventful Saturday, making a series of roster moves ahead of their Week 3 clash against the Indianapolis Colts.

Among the moves, the Ravens released veteran quarterback Josh Johnson, who served as backup to starter Lamar Jackson in the first two weeks of the 2023 season. This opens the way for Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley to step into the role of No. 2 QB.

Baltimore also addressed the lack of depth at the running back position after Justice Hill’s injury. The team elevated veterans Melvin Gordon and Kenyan Drake from the practice squad. The duo is expected to share the duties of backing up Gus Edwards, who is expected to start in the backfield in the Colts game.

Johnson, who has been in his third stint with the Ravens, isn’t subject to waivers. He will most likely return to the team next week as a practice squad addition.

Gordon, who has two Pro Bowl nods on his resume, spent the 2022 season with the Denver Broncos. He rushed for 318 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games.

Drake played 11 games with the Ravens in 2022, making five starts and rushing for 442 yards and three touchdowns. He spent time with the Colts during the 2023 preseason but didn’t make the 53-man cut, after which Baltimore re-signed him to their practice squad.

Many people believe 2021’s second-round pick Javonte Williams is the future of the Denver Broncos’ backfield. However, that future will have to wait a while if Melvin Gordon manages to have a say in it.

Gordon, who started 16 games in 2021 for the Broncos, told reporters on Tuesday that he won’t give up his top running back spot without a fight.

“I told [Broncos general manager George Paton] when I was at the [negotiating] table, I’m not going to lay down, I’m not going to lay down,” Gordon, who signed a new one-year deal with Denver in April, said. ” … I’ve always got that mindset that I’ve got to go get it every year.”

Despite being a starter, Gordon shared carries with Williams last year. They finished the year with 203 carries, although the veteran was more successful with 918 yards and eight touchdowns. The rookie, on the other hand, had 903 yards and four TDs en route to the PFWA All-Rookie Team honor.

Melvin Gordon, who is a two-time Pro Bowler, initially planned to change teams in the free agency. However, it turned out that there were not a lot of teams who could guarantee him significant playing time. This and Denver’s acquisition of star quarterback Russell Wilson ended up prompting Gordon to stay put despite an upcoming battle for carries.

The Denver Broncos will have a new quarterback for the 2022 NFL season, but their backfield will remain largely intact. Veteran running back Melvin Gordon agreed to return to the Broncos for another season after inking a one-year deal on Wednesday.

The Broncos confirmed the news on their social media but didn’t disclose the deal’s financial terms. According to reports, Gordon’s deal could be worth up to $5 million, although a significant chunk of that money is tied to incentives.

Gordon signed with the Broncos on a two-year, $16 million contract ahead of the 2020 season. He played a total of 31 games in the past two years, rushing for a total of 1,904 yards and 17 touchdowns. The 29-year-old player was Denver’s leading rusher in both seasons while adding 60 catches for 371 yards and three TDs as well.

Despite his solid performance in Broncos’ jersey, it seemed like Denver is unlikely to entertain the possibility of bringing back Gordon for 2022. The organization has their back of the future in last year’s second-round pick Javonte Williams and wanted to give him a more prominent role moving forward. However, the lack of depth behind Williams and weak RB class in this year’s draft caused them to circle back to Gordon, who was happy to get on board after lukewarm interest in free agency.

Melvin Gordon was the first-round pick for the LA Chargers in 2015. He made Pro Bowls in 2016 and 2018 and rushed for 10 touchdowns twice while with the franchise.

Running back Melvin Gordon made a surprising decision to leave Los Angeles Chargers this offseason and join Denver Broncos. According to Gordon, this was the right move for him, as Broncos fit better with his playing style.

Gordon made an appearance on Rapsheet + Friends Podcast on Tuesday and said that he felt like he couldn’t be the best version of himself with the Chargers.

“It really didn’t play out to my strengths, especially the first couple years there,” said Gordon. “I kind of just had to adjust and make it work. It kind of wasn’t a system built for me.”

The 27-year-old believes things will be different with Broncos, with whom he inked a two-year, $16 million contract in March.

“I feel like Denver kinda runs my style of football, and I think it’s a great fit,” he added.

Despite feeling unutilized by Chargers, Melvin Gordon saw plenty of success while in Los Angeles. In five years, he made two Pro Bowls while rushing for 4,240 and 36 touchdowns.

Gordon was also a factor in the passing game, getting 224 receptions for 1,873 yards and 11 touchdowns.

NFL Week 9 has come to a close, and we’re not officially more than halfway through the season.

The playoff picture is becoming clearer and clearer every week, and the results in Week 9’s games have helped to make things even clearer. There were surprising results, such as the Miami Dolphins’ first win and the New England Patriots’ first loss, as well as memorable performances by players like Russell Wilson.

Here are the biggest winners of Week 9.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens got the most impressive win of the week, toppling the previously-undefeated New England Patriots at home by a 37-20 final score.

Their win improved their record to 6-2, keeping the Steelers at bay and cementing themselves as the clear favorite to win the AFC North. What’s even more important is that their win, in which their running game had a huge day, combing for 250 yards and 3 scores against the stingy Pats defense.

The Ravens are for real, and they could be New England’s biggest conference threat come playoff time.

Melvin Gordon

Who said that Chargers running back Melvin Gordon had lost his mojo? After a big game in San Diego’s 26-11 home win over the Packers, those that had thought that Gordon had lost a step are re-evaluating their stance.

Gordon rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries, scoring two touchdowns on the ground. He also caught 3 passes for 29 yards, making him San Diego’s MVP in their big win. After a slow start to his season in which he had failed to accumulate more than 48 total yards, the two-time Pro Bowler appears to be getting back on track.

Cincinnati Bengals

Sure, the Bengals didn’t even play this week (mercifully for their fans), but they ended up as big winners after Miami won its first game of the season in a 26-18 triumph over the Jets.

This makes the hapless Bengals the odds-on favorite to grab the first pick in next year’s NFL Draft, giving them a choice between potential franchise quarterbacks in Oregon’s Justin Herbert and Alabama’s Tua Tagovaiola. Can they maintain their grip on the spot? Who knows, but for now, they look to be on a crash course for the #1 selection.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs might still be without NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, but a big win over the Minnesota Vikings with a quality performance by backup quarterback Matt Moore has them sitting at 6-3 and maintaining their 1.5 game division lead intact.

Moore completed 25 of 35 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown to lead Kansas City over the Vikings in a tight matchup. They have kept their boat afloat during Mahomes’ multiple-week absence, and they could see him return as soon as this weekend against the Titans.

Los Angeles Chargers are getting one of their most important playmakers just in time to help them overcome a bad start of the season. Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon ended his holdout on Thursday and decided to be on the team’s disposal for the rest of 2019.

Gordon previously missed the team’s training camp and first three weeks of the regular season, holding out in an attempt to get a new contract. Although this still hasn’t happened, the 26-year-old decided to join the team in order to further showcase his ability and value to the team ahead of the next year when he will become a free agent.

Chargers confirmed Gordon’s return on their social media.

While Melvin Gordon has missed all of the season activities and reportedly isn’t in the football shape, he might still see the field in Week 4 game against Miami Dolphins according to head coach Antony Lynn.

“I’ve said all along there’s a chance,” – said Lynn on Friday. “He’s looked fine. He’s in good shape, but he hasn’t been practicing football, so obviously, he’s not ready to go back in there and carry the load right now but you never know, he may have to.”

Gordon himself wouldn’t mind playing.

“We do what we gotta do to win,” – Gordon told reporters. “For the most part, I think I’ll be alright.”

Gordon is currently in the final year of his rookie deal that pays him $5.6 million in base salary. He is reportedly asking to get around $13-$14 million annually for his new deal, which would make him among the highest-paid RBs in the league. Chargers, on the other hand, are only willing to go as high as $10 million.

It looks like Los Angeles Chargers’ running back Melvin Gordon doesn’t have an intention to sit out the entire 2019 NFL season after all. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Gordon, who is currently holding out in an attempt to get a new contract, intends to report to the team before the end of the year.

After Gordon decided not to join the team before Week 1, many assumed that he will follow Le’Veon Bell’s blueprint and sit out the entire year. ESPN’s source, however, has other information.

“This is not a Le’Veon Bell situation,” – the source told ESPN. “He still wants to be a Charger. But he’s got to protect himself.”

Gordon is entering the final year of his rookie deal, which pays him $5.605 million in 2019. The Chargers reportedly offered him a contract extension worth $10 million per year in the offseason, but the 26-year-old Pro Bowler decided to reject it as he believes he is worth more than that.

After the two sides failed to make any progress in recent months, Chargers even allowed Melvin Gordon and his agent to seek out a trade. The team also decided to stop all the contract negotiations talks until the end of the season.

The word around the league is that Gordon will most likely report to Chargers by Week 10. This way he will get the credit for 2019 season, and be able to hit the free agency in 2020. If he was to sit out the entire year, he won’t get credit for the season, which would delay his free-agent status for a year.

Gordon played only 12 games in 2018, but still managed to put together a productive season. He rushed for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also catching 50 passes for 490 yards and four TDs.

Star running back Melvin Gordon’s time with the Chargers is reportedly coming to an end after the player’s agent asked for a trade away from Los Angeles.

Gordon and the Chargers have been involved in a contract dispute throughout this offseason. The running back is in the last season of his contract with the franchise and had reportedly been looking for a raise.

With Chargers GM Tom Telesco reportedly unwilling to give Gordon the raise and extension that he’s after, Gordon and his agent Damarius Bilbo have decided that it’s better to simply look for another team.

It still remains to be seen if Telesco and the Chargers are willing and able to swing a deal for the two-time Pro Bowler.

Gordon, a first-round draft pick by the then San Diego Chargers in 2015, has excelled as one of the league’s top running backs since debuting in the NFL. He was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster in 2016 and last season. A pass-catching threat out of the backfield, Gordon rushed for 885 yards and caught 50 balls for 490 yards, accumulating 14 total touchdowns for the Chargers last season.

Perhaps there is still time for the Chargers and Gordon to mend their broken relationship and keep the unhappy running back in LA, but it seems less and less likely with every day that passes.

Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon is looking to get a new deal this summer and isn’t afraid to use unpopular methods to get it. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Gordon told the Chargers that he won’t report for training camp and is prepared to ask for trade unless the team gives him what he wants.

Gordon is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, which will pay him $5.6 million in 2019. This ranks the 26-year-old Pro Bowler 11th in terms of salary among all RBs in the league.

Gordon’s agent Damarius Bilbo confirmed to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport that his client is prepared to go to great lengths in order to get a new contract.

“He’s very serious,” told Bilbo said. “He’s worked his butt off and the fifth-year option is a result of where he was drafted. It’s what it is. But if we’d gotten a respectable offer, we wouldn’t be here. But he felt disrespected. He’s very serious.”

According to Bilbo, Gordon already received an offer for a contract extension from the Chargers, but described it as “disrespectful.”

“We received an offer — talks had been dead — but we received an offer that wasn’t a fair offer based on what Melvin has done, where he was drafted, and how he’s performed, making two of the last four Pro Bowls,” – he added. “It was disrespectful.”

Melvin Gordon was limited to only 12 games last season due to MCL injury but still managed to put together a productive year. Gordon finished 2018 rushing for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns while also adding 50 receptions for 490 yards and four touchdowns.
