The Los Angeles Rams will enter the 2021 NFL season with a new starting quarterback. According to multiple reports, the Rams made a deal with the Detroit Lions to acquire Pro Bowl signal-caller Matthew Stafford.

The trade will see the Rams getting Stafford while sending quarterback Jared Goff and draft picks to Detroit. Reportedly, the Lions will get first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 alongside a third-rounder in 2021.

The teams worked out the trade details over the weekend, but the agreement can’t be made official until March 17th, when the new league year starts.

Stafford and the Lions previously agreed to go their separate ways after another disappointing season in 2020. The team made changes in the front office and at the head coaching position recently and is expected to go down a complete rebuild in the recent future. The 32-year-old QB, on the other hand, wanted to go someplace where he can play meaningful football and challenge for a Super Bowl.

Sources close to the Lions organization say that there were “seven or eight teams” interested in Matthew Stafford, but the player wanted to go to Los Angeles. This came to be when the Rams decided Stafford could be the missing piece and decided to increase their offer.

The trade immediately makes the Rams one of the favorites in the NFC. While he never managed to win a playoff game with the Lions, Stafford is considered one of the most talented QBs in the NFL in recent decades.

During his time in Detroit, he broke almost every Lions passing record while posting eight seasons with 4,000+ yards. In total, he started 165 games and threw for 45,109 and 282 passing touchdowns.

The Rams seemed set on Jared Goff as the quarterback of their future, especially after giving him a four-year, $134 million extension in 2019. But Goff’s inconsistency and turnover problems in the past two years started bothering head coach Sean McVay.

Having arguably the best defense in the league at this moment, the Rams knew they needed to do something to get more consistency and production on the offensive end. If Stafford manages to bring this, they may be back in the Super Bowl in no time.

Known for his late fourth-quarter heroics, Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford is the last person in the league you want to turn over the ball to when the game is on the line. But Atlanta Falcons did it regardless on Sunday night and now have a 23-22 defeat to show for.

Entering the final two minutes of the contest against the Lions, Falcons looked in good shape to win the game and feel better about their disappointing season. Trailing two points, Atlanta had first-and-goal at Detroit’s 10-yard line. They needed to run down the clock and kick a near-goal field goal to take it all home.

But things took a bad turn for the Falcons quickly.

With 1:12 left in the contest, running back Todd Gurley received a hand-off and was offered a clear path to the end zone by Detroit Lions D-line. Gurley knew he was baited and attempted to stop himself short of the goal line. However, the momentum made him break the plain, and he ended up scoring the touchdown Atlanta didn’t want.

With 1:04 on the clock, Stafford received the ball and went to work. Not having the convenience of a single timeout, the 32-year-old marched his offense 75 yards down the field and found T.J. Hockenson in the endzone with no time left on the clock to add another big comeback to his resume.

Matthew Stafford now has 30 fourth-quarter comebacks, which is the eighth-most in the history of the league.

“We were up against the clock as good as you could be, and guys made plays,” said Stafford after the game. “I love doing that. That’s my favorite part about playing the game. I love this game, I love competing, and there’s no more competitive, pressure-packed situation than whatever it was, (second)-and-goal from the (11)-yard line with no time left. I mean, that’s what you live for as a quarterback.”

With this win, Lions managed to keep themselves in playoff contention with a 3-3 record. Falcons, on the other hand, are now 1-6.

Detroit Lions will have quarterback Matthew Stafford under center when the 2020 NFL season kicks off. According to Lions’ general manager Bob Quinn, Stafford recovered from back and hip injuries he had last year and is “good to go.”

Stafford was limited to only eight games in 2019 due to fractures in his back, spending half of the season on the injured list. But it appears the health issues are now behind him.

“Matthew is doing great,” said Quinn via Lions’ official website. “He calls me probably once a week to check in. I know he’s working out. I know he’s feeling good, so health-wise he’s good to go. As I said at the end of the season, if we were starting our offseason program next week, he’d be there as a full participant. He’s cleared medically from that standpoint.”

Matthew Stafford completed 64.3 percent of his passes last year, throwing for 2,499 yards and 19 touchdowns. Lions were 3-4-1 during that period and looked like they might make a run for the playoffs. After Stafford went down, however, Lions weren’t capable of generating any meaningful offense and lost all of the eight remaining games.

Last season was the first time since 2010 that Stafford missed regular-season games. He had a streak of 136 consecutive starts before sitting down the Week 9 game against Oakland Raiders.

Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford made 136 consecutive starts in the NFL before sitting out Week 10 with a back injury. Stafford also missed Sunday’s game against Dallas Cowboys and according to ESPN, he could miss six more weeks.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday that Stafford played through several fractured bones in his back this season, and wanted to continue playing. However, the team doctors decided to deny him that, fearing that the injury might worsen.

Despite doctors saying that Stafford should sit six weeks, he could be back on the field earlier than this. Schefter cites sources close to the Lions’ organization, who said that the team expects the 31-year-old signal-caller to beat the odds and return within three weeks.

Matthew Stafford’s absence will probably end Detroit Lions’ hopes for a playoff spot. The team has now lost two games in the row with Stafford’s backup Jeff Driskel under center and is currently sitting last in NFC North with a 3-6-1 record.

Stafford has been playing really well in 2019, completing 64.5 percent of his passes and throwing for 2,499 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was unable to play in his team’s Sunday loss to the Chicago Bears, snapping one of the longest streaks in the NFL.

Stafford, who started 136 consecutive games for the Lions as quarterback, a streak which dated back to the 2010 season, was not able to extend the impressive streak after discomfort caused by broken bones in his back made it impossible to take the field.

This back injury is a recurring issue for Stafford, but according to team general manager Bob Quinn, he suffered an aggravation of the problem in the team’s loss last Sunday to the Oakland Raiders.

The unfortunate development meant that Jeff Driskel started at quarterback for Detroit, throwing for 269 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Stafford no longer owns the NFL’s second-longest started games streak, behind Philip Rivers’ 228 game streak. The former Georgia Bulldog’s streak, which ended yesterday, goes down as the sixth-longest streak in the history of the league.

It is unknown whether Stafford, a 2014 Pro Bowler, will be able to return to the Lions this season.

The team may opt to allow their star quarterback to fully recover instead of further risking his health.

The production of Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford took a big dip in 2018 as he threw for less than 4,000 yards for the first time since injury-riddled 2010 season. While analysts contributed this decline to various factors, it looks like Stafford has a proper excuse for his bad performances.

According to longtime Lions writer Mike O’Hara, Stafford played in 2018 while having broken bones in his back.

“He had a broken back last year,” – said O’Hara during an appearance on the weekly podcast by WJR’s Ken Brown. “Broken bones in his back.”

The news was later confirmed by NFL Insider Ian Rapaport, who described the injury as “tiny fractures” in Stafford’s back.

If we take into consideration just the years he played full 16 games, 2018 was a career-worst for Matthew Stafford. He threw for just 3777 yards and 21 touchdowns, compared to 2017’s 4446 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Lions were also affected by Stafford’s bad performances, as they finished 6-10, which was their worst record in six years.
