While it has fallen into a bit of a shadow behind the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball over the past couple of months, Major League Soccer is another American sports league that has had its season put on hold thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The MLS, whose season began on February 29th, was only able to complete two matches before the suspension of the league in mid-March. It looks to be a virtual impossibility that the league will be completed with anything resembling its normal format.

However, MLS is reportedly sent to present an alternative idea to players and owners that could see them all convene in Orlando, Florida this summer for an all-inclusive tournament that would look to model the World Cup.

Florida, which was declared “open” for professional sports on May 13th, would serve as the base for all teams and players during the event. Games would take place at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex and would be held without fans.

An initial group stage would give way to a knockout tournament whose champion would be crowned as a sort of “winner” of the 2020 season, which will almost certainly not take place with a normal format or number of games.

Teams will also reportedly all congregate in Florida for a preseason training camp before the beginning of games in late June.

An idea that has long been floated around in soccer circles in North America was brought to the top of the headlines over the weekend after an influential president made a bold statement.

Santos Laguna and Atlas owner Alejandro Irarragorri stated in an interview that he thinks the best solution for raising the prestige of both Major League Soccer and the Liga MX would be to join the two leagues in a sort of North American super league.

Major League Soccer and the Liga MX became partners in 2018, collaborating in various initiatives and competing in the Campeones and Leagues Cups against one another.

According to Irarragorri, this partnership could be beneficial for both leagues and for the profile of the game in the North American continent as a whole if the leagues also began competing in games against one another.

Irarragorri said, “It’s probable that the possible creation of a North American super league is best for MLS in the short term and for Liga MX in the medium term, but over the long term it is best for both and the potential to add value and create jobs is immense. Without a doubt it is an alternative that should be explored and analyzed.”

The Mexican owner pointed out that a large share of MLS’s revenue comes from Mexican fans, and that the American league’s ownership and growth model creates more revenue on average for teams than his country’s model.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that has worked to hurt both leagues, this idea could gain even more traction in the coming months.

DeAndre Yedlin, one of the starts of the United States Men’s National Team and one of the highest-profile American players currently in the game of soccer, didn’t hold back his feelings when talking about Major League Soccer in an interview with ESPN.

According to the 26-year-old right back, the culture of relegation and promotion would go a long way to boosting the competitiveness of Major League Soccer and the American version of the game as a whole.

Yedlin, who is currently in his fifth season in the Premier League and in his fourth season with Newcastle United, stated “There’s a different energy to when you win/lose a game in MLS to when you win or lose here. It’s that feeling that here, every game matters.”

In England, the bottom three clubs in the Premier League standings are relegated to the second-tier Championship every season, with three teams from that league receiving promotion to the Premier League.

In the United States, teams that pay a franchise fee to play in the MLS are guaranteed a spot in that league, the top one in American soccer, every season regardless of performance.

The Seattle native went on to say, ” If that got introduced, the league would be much more competitive. Something needs to be done to take the league more seriously, and I think that would be good.”

Major League Soccer won’t return at least until May 10th. This was the decision made by the league on Thursday as part of the measures to cope with the current coronavirus outbreak.

MLS was forced to suspend the season after just two games due to coronavirus. The plan was initially to pause all activities until March 30th, but it became obvious in recent days that this was an unrealistic deadline. The league determined that a prolonged suspension is necessary and made the decision at a recent video conference.

The league reiterated that the plan is to play the 2020 season in full, even if that means prolonging the MLS Cup towards the end of the year.

“MLS remains focused on playing the entire 2020 season and is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing MLS Cup in December, as the league did prior to the 2019 season. The league is also identifying other available dates,” said the league in a statement.

Most soccer leagues around the world suspended their activities due to coronavirus as well. Currently, the only prominent soccer competition still underway is Turkey, where matches are being played without an audience.

Major League Soccer’s rapid growth continued today with the announcement of a new team, the league’s 30th, which will be located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The league made a joint announcement with the franchise’s owners today to let fans and journalists from around the world know that Major League Soccer’s thirtieth team is only a year away from becoming a reality.

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper paid a $375 million fee to found the franchise, which will become the first MLS franchise in North Carolina. The team is set to share Bank of America stadium with Tepper’s National Football League franchise.

Despite the announcement coming near the end of 2019, due to the availability of a stadium in which the team can play as well as the league’s enthusiasm to get the new Charlotte project running, only just over a year will pass between today’s announcement and the team’s first match.

Tepper expressed optimism about the league’s newest franchise, stating, “(There are) seven-plus million people within an hour and a half drive. The only city that has only two major sports. No major league summer sport in Charlotte.”

“It’s sort of a perfect storm for a community.”

Charlotte’s official team name is yet to be announced.

It looks like everything is set for Everton star Wayne Rooney to come to Major League Soccer. Rooney visited Washington last week to discuss a potential contract with DC United and now the team’s coach Ben Olsen expressed his hope that both parties are interested in getting the job done.

There is interest in Wayne Rooney from our end and I think there is interest from his end too,” – Olsen said to reporters on Saturday night. “I hope it can get over the line because he’s a very good player who can help us. He would be a great player for this league.

According to ESPN, Wayne Rooney agreed to personal details that would make him DC United’s highest paid players and keep him with the team through 2020 MLS season.

“Nothing is done, so I don’t want to get into talk of arrival until he actually arrives,” – Olsen added. “Nothing is ever done in this world and when you’re looking at a deal of this scope and size. We’ll see, but hopefully, we can get it done.

Wayne Rooney has a solid 2017-18 season behind him, appearing in 40 games for Everton and scoring 11 goals. DC United could really use his services, considering the fact that the team is currently last in the Eastern Conference with just two wins out of 10 games played.

After Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined the Los Angeles Galaxy, another Premier League star has his eyes set on the Major League Soccer. According to reports from BBC and Sky Sport, Everton’s forward Wayne Rooney has agreed in principle to join D.C. United.

The deal to bring Wayne Rooney to the United States has been in the works for several weeks now, and player’s agents recently visited Washington to iron out smaller details. The 32-year-old will receive a contract throughout the 2020 MLS season, becoming the team’s highest-paid player.

Although it looks that the move to MLS is inevitable for former England national team captain, Everton would sure like to keep Rooney for the next season as well.

There have been rumors about Wayne going abroad, China or America, but we won’t find out until Wayne and his agent have been contacted and whether he feels like he wants to be here or not.” – said Everton’s head coach Sam Allardyce . “At the moment he is an Everton fan as well as an Everton player so I wouldn’t consider anything is on the cards at the moment.

It would have to be massive for him to want to leave Everton.” – added Allardyce while dismissing reports that Rooney might be unsatisfied with his role on the team.

Wayne Rooney started his professional career with Everton, where he played in 67 games from 2002 to 2004 while scoring 15 Premiere League goals in that period. He earned himself a transfer to Manchester United in 2004 and went on to become one of the team’s legends. He played in 559 games during his 13 seasons with the team and managed to score 253 in all competitions, becoming United’s all-time scoring leader. Rooney also won numerous trophies with Manchester United, including five national league titles and one UEFA Champions League. In July 2017, he decided to return to Everton.

LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos obviously likes it in the Major League Soccer. The 28-year-old decided to come to MLS from Europe in 2015, a decision that was widely criticized in his native Mexico. But for dos Santos, this was the right decision all along and he never regretted it.

ESPN Mexico had a chat with Giovani dos Santos recently and asked him whether his decision would have been the same if Tottenham Spurs or Atletico Madrid came calling at the moment he was preparing to sign with Galaxy.

If I take myself back to the moment of making the decision and if at that moment they’d have called from the teams you mentioned, I’d have chosen Galaxy,” – responded Dos Santos. “I’m happy with the decision I’ve taken. I get up in the morning and I’m happy and that is what is important for me in the end. I greet my family, my brothers, my parents. Me being happy doesn’t have a price.

Once considered one of Mexico’s brightest talents, Giovani dos Santos never managed to make a significant breakthrough in his career. After playing for Barcelona, Tottenham, Galatasaray, and Villareal among others, dos Santos joined the LA Galaxy on 15 July 2015. In 69 games he played so far, he managed to score 26 goals. Still, these goals didn’t help him to convince other MLS players in his capabilities. He was named the league’s most overrated player according to pool ESPN conducted among 104 MLS players.

He’s a good player, but I think American media overhype him based on his past experience with Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur instead of his MLS performances,” – one player said of Dos Santos. “I think he’s a player who sells a lot of tickets for the Galaxy because of the large Mexican community in L.A., but I don’t think he has the same impact on the league as players like David Villa and Sebastian Giovinco.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is coming to Major League Soccer. The 36-year-old striker has agreed to a mutual contract termination with Manchester United on Thursday and has reportedly agreed to sign a deal with MLS side LA Galaxy. Ibrahimovic’s move to MLS should be finalized until the end of the week.

Great things also come to an end and it is time to move on after two fantastic seasons with Manchester United.” – wrote Ibrahimovic on his Instagram profile. “Thank you to the club, the fans, the team, the coach, the staff and everybody who shared with me this part of my history.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined Manchester United in July 2016, signing a one year deal with the team. He ended up playing 46 games in all competitions in the 2016-17 season and scoring 28 goals. Ibrahimovic suffered serious ligament damage in his knee on 20 April, which saw him being sidelined for the season. He signed a new deal with the team after recovering from injury, but struggled to find playing time and was featured in just 7 games, scoring one goal. Due to a minor injury, he failed to play a single game in 2018.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Zlatan for his contribution to the team since his arrival and wishes him well for the future.” – said Man Utd in a statement.

Prior to joining Man Utd, Zlatan Ibrahimovic also played for Malmö FF, Ajax, Juventus, Internazionale, Barcelona, Milan and Paris Saint-Germain

During the MLS preseason, ESPN conducted a poll among the 104 league’s players in order to find out who are the most overrated and underrated players in Major League Soccer among other things. As it turns out, LA Galaxy’s forward Giovani dos Santos is the most overrated player in the league, while Montreal Impact’s midfielder Ignacio Piatti is the most underrated.

The 28-year-old dos Santos received 11 percent of the votes, edging out Toronto FC and USMNT midfielder Michael Bradley, who had 10 percent of all votes. The list also contains several other USMNT members like Jozy Altidore (7 percent), Paul Arriola (6 percent), and Tim Howard (4 percent).

Giovani dos Santos is entering his fourth year in the league, having played 67 games for Galaxy and scoring 24 goals in the process.

The 33-year-old Ignacio Piatti, who recorded 17 goals and six assists for Impact in the last season, was named the most underrated player ahead of Seattle’s Cristian Roldan and Columbus’ Wil Trapp.

I think he’s a top-five player in the league.” – said one player about Piatti.

The MLS players voted about their toughest individual opponents with Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco and NYCFC’s David Villa emerging at the top, each of them having 10 percent of the votes.
