If he decides to retire after the 2023-24 season, Croatian midfielder Luka Modric will have a new job waiting for him right away. According to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Modric has been offered an opportunity to join Real Madrid’s coaching staff by head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Reportedly, Modric received the offer a few months ago and initially rejected it. However, it appears that this isn’t a definitive answer, and he could still change his mind.

Sources close to the club say that Modric’s preference is to keep playing, believing he can still be a valuable contributor on the field. But, as things stand, he would have to leave Santiago Bernabeu in order to do so. His playing time was reduced in 2023-24 compared to previous seasons, and he only started 11 games in La Liga.

Modric is currently in the final year of his contract with Real and is set to become a free agent in the summer. He received interest from Saudi Arabia at the end of the last season, and this still might be an option if Real is unwilling to give him a new contract and playing time he desires.

Luka Modric joined Real Madrid in 2012 in a transfer from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. Since then, he has made 516 appearances in all competitions, scoring 38 goals and dishing 83 assists. However, the club feels that adding more star power wouldn’t hurt and believes Modric would perfectly fit in their team. Modric was close to leaving Real this past summer, receiving lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia. However, the 38-year-old Croatian ended up staying in Spain by agreeing to a new one-year deal.

Luka Modric will miss Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final matchup against Osasuna on Saturday, May 6 due to a thigh injury. The Croatian midfielder is also a doubt for the first leg of the Galacticos’ UEFA Champions League semifinal clash with Manchester City the following Tuesday night.

“Following tests carried out on Luka Modric by the Real Madrid Medical Services, an injury to the back of his left thigh has been diagnosed,” the club announced in an official statement.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti stated during a news conference on Friday that the club is monitoring Modric’s progress and that he is not yet a definite absentee from the cup final but is highly unlikely to recover in time to face Osasuna.

Ancelotti also expressed his hope that Modric will be available in time to face Man City in the Champions League, particularly since Eder Militao will already be unavailable due to picking up a suspension.

Lyon and Norway’s Ada Hegerberg won the first ever Ballon d’Or in the female division while French World Cup winner and PSG’s forward Kylian Mbappe won the first ever Kopa Trophy (an award for the best U21 player).

Modric, 33, led Real Madrid to their third back-to-back Champions League win earlier in the year before helping Croatia reach the World Cup final in Russia. The midfielder edged out former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s won the award five times. Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezman came in third, just ahead of his French compatriot Kylian Mbappe.

Messi, who won La Liga and the Copa del Rey title with Barcelona but suffered a poor run with Argentina at the World Cup, was ranked fifth, his worst performance at the event since 2006.

“It is a unique feeling,” Modric said after clinching the award. “I have sensational feelings in me at the moment which I find hard to describe.”

Hegerberg, who became the first woman to ever receive the prestigious award shared a message of encouragement to women.

“It is fantastic. It is (a) great achievement for me,” Hegerberg said. “I want to ask every young woman to believe in themselves.”

Liverpool’s forward Mohammed Salah was the best ranked African player at the event (6^th) and the highest position for an African since Samuel Eto’o in 2009 (5^th). Santiago Solari suffered his first loss as Real Madrid’s manager on Saturday as Eibar won their first ever game at the Bernabeu 3-0.

The Argentine replaced Coach Julen Lopetegui after a poor run that ended in a 5-1 nil over rivals Barcelona earlier in the season. Solari quickly turned the tire at Madrid, helping the team fire 15 goals against four to win his first four games as the club’s manager.

All that changed on Saturday when seventh-placed Eibar fired three goals past the 13-time UEFA Champions League winners. Gonzalo Escalante scored the first goal in the 16^th minute. Madrid fought back but failed to find an equalizer after several attempts.

Eibar continued their dominance in the second half, scoring two quick goals in the 52^nd and 57^th minutes thanks to Sergi Enrich and Kike. After that moment, Real looked like a shadow of the giant club they are, finding themselves defending attacks from Eibar for the rest of the game.

Both Luka Modric and Gareth Bale tested Eibar’s goalkeeper with a few shots but in all cases, Asier Riesgo stopped them. As the game closed to an end, Madrid almost conceded a fourth goal after Fabian Orellana shot past Dani Cebbalos to reach keeper Courtois who turned the ball wide.

Barcelona’s star Lionel Messi has failed to make the final cut for the first time since 2006. Instead, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Mohamed Salah will be named the world’s best at the awards ceremony that will take place in London on September 24th.

Previous ten Best FIFA Men’s Player award ceremonies saw Messi and Ronaldo taking honors between themselves, with each one winning five awards.

Numerous analysts believe that Lionel Messi deserved the nod this year as well, due to his stellar performance in 2017-18. With his help, Barcelona won the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup while Messi took home the European Golden Shoe, an award given to the best goal scorer on the continent. Despite these achievements, Messi’s failure in UEFA Champions League and on 2018 World Cup with Argentina ultimately got him out of the contention for world’s best soccer player this year.

On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo also didn’t do much at the World Cup, but he managed to win his third straight Champions League trophy with Real Madrid and was the tournament’s top scorer.

Ronaldo’s teammate Luka Modric was also a big reason for Real’s success while putting on some exceptional performance with Croatian at the World Cup and winning the Golden Ball as the best player.

Finally, Mohamed Salah also made a firm case for himself by being the best player in the English Premier League. Salah became the first player to score 32 goals in a 38-game season in England while propelling Liverpool to Champions League finals with 10 goals.
