Former Barcelona and Liverpool star striker Luis Suarez is coming home. Suarez, a free agent after his contract with Atletico Madrid expired this summer, is expected to sign a deal with Uruguayan Primera Division side Nacional.

Suarez started his professional career with Nacional, scoring 10 goals in 27 matches for the club before heading to Europe. While the return to his boyhood club is yet to be confirmed, the 35-year-old player did confirm that there is a pre-contract agreement in place via a video posted on Twitter.

“It was impossible to waste this opportunity of playing again in Nacional, and we have a pre-agreement with the club,” said Suarez. “In the next few hours, details will be finalized, and we hope that the agreement we all want will be reached and that we can all enjoy this new stage and see each other in the coming days.”

After leaving Nacional in 2006 as a 19-year-old player, Luis Suarez first signed for Dutch side Groningen. He only spent one season with the club before signing with four-time UEFA Champions League winners Ajax. Suarez then moved to Liverpool and Barcelona, where he established himself as one of the best strikers in football, before spending the last two seasons with Atletico.

Suarez was linked with a move to MLS earlier this summer, with Inter Miami being mentioned as one of his potential destinations. However, it appears that the opportunity to play in front of home fans was something the veteran couldn’t turn down.

The 33-year-old forward then agreed to terms with Atletico, but before the move was finalized, Barca changed their mind. 

Reportedly, the Catalan giants don’t feel comfortable letting Suarez join Atletico, as it would provide a boost for a team that will rival them for the La Liga title this season. Because of this, they decided to backtrack on their promise and are pushing for the player to make a move elsewhere.

Suarez, on the other hand, remains intent on Atletico and is willing to look into legal options that would allow him to force the move.

Luis Suarez was previously close to joining Seria A powerhouse Juventus, but the move fell through due to certain technicalities. Juve eventually completely abandoned the idea of pursuing Suarez and instead focused on AS Roma’s Edin Dzeko and Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata. 

Suarez also had an offer from MLS side Inter Miami, who were willing to make him the highest-paid player in the history of the league, but decided to pass.

Luis Suarez spent four seasons with Ajax before joining Liverpool in 2010 and has left a significant mark on Johan Cruyff Arena. In 159 games, Suarez scored an impressive 111 goals while helping the team to one Eredivisie title and KNVB Cup trophy.

Uruguayan journalist Enzo Olivera recently reported that Ajax’s sporting director Marc Overmars has been working on Suarez deal in recent days and that he feels confident about landing the 33-year-old scorer. Barca, on the other hand, told the player that he has no future at Camp Nou despite being under contract for another year.

It remains unclear whether Suarez has the desire to play in the Netherlands again or decides to explore other options. In recent months, he was also linked with a move to MLS with Inter Miami believed to be interested in his services.

Suarez further added to his comments, remarking on what makes the league attractive to him. He mentioned the league as “a competition which has grown a lot in the last few years and you can see that with the young players that have moved there in the last two years, above all the South Americans.”

The 32-year-old forward has been linked in the past with a move to David Beckham’s nascent Inter Miami franchise.

Lodeiro had an interview with MLSsoccer.com on Thursday and revealed that Suarez is genuinely interested in playing soccer in the United States, but Barcelona isn’t ready to let him leave just yet.

“I think you need to convince Barcelona. He wants to come to MLS,” – said Lodeiro. “He is always asking me about the league. “

Lodeiro believes that Suarez will eventually end up making a move to MLS. 

“Sooner or later he’ll come to MLS, though.” – he added. “Well, hopefully. He likes the league. He’s always asking me things about it. I think it’s only a matter of time before he’s out here.”

Reportedly, Barcelona would let Luis Suarez leave if they can find a fitting replacement for him. La Liga giants tried to do something about this in the summer but eventually failed to get the players they wanted. Also, considering the fact that the 32-year-old has a contract until 2021, they wouldn’t be ready to let him leave for free.
