The Los Angeles Dodgers’ highly touted pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a rough outing in his MLB debut. Getting the start against the San Diego Padres on Thursday, Yamamoto allowed five runs and was pulled after the first inning.

Yamamoto delivered 43 pitches, allowing four hits and one walk. He finished the frame with a 45.00 ERA and two strikeouts before making way for Michael Grove. The Dodgers wound up suffering an 11-15 loss.

Yamamoto joined the Dodgers in December on a 12-year, $325 million contract, which is the richest deal given to a pitcher in MLB history. He previously spent his entire professional career in Nippon Professional Baseball, where he won three Eiji Sawamura Awards, which is NPB’s equivalent to the Cy Young Award.

The Dodgers and a lot of other MLB teams who pursued Yamamoto believed that his transition to MLB would be seamless. However, this looked like a questionable assessment even before the disastrous debut against the Padres.

Yamamoto made three starts in the Cactus League this spring, pitching a total of 9⅔ innings. He made 13 strikeouts but also gave up 15 hits and four walks while having a combined 8.38 ERA.

Yamamoto’s early struggles are unlikely to cause much concern for the LA team, but it is unlikely they will be comfortable until he starts performing at a high level.

Ace Clayton Kershaw is staying with the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to multiple reports, the two sides are in agreement on a one-year deal that also has a player option for the 2025 season.

Reportedly, Kershaw will undergo his physical in the coming days, after which the deal will become official. This will ensure that the 36-year-old player remains with the only franchise he knew since being selected seventh overall in the 2006 MLB draft by the Dodgers.

Kershaw is coming off a strong campaign in 2023, going 13–5 with a 2.46 ERA and 137 strikeouts. After the season wrapped up, Kershaw underwent shoulder surgery, which is expected to keep him out for the first part of 2024.

While Kershaw expressed interest in continuing to play, his return to the Dodgers wasn’t always certain. He played on short-term deals in the past couple of years, and there was a possibility he might suit up for his hometown team, the Texas Rangers. However, the Dodgers didn’t allow this to happen, and it appears that Kershaw will retire as a one-franchise player.

If Kershaw picks up his option for 2025, the Dodgers could have a fearsome rotation that would also include two-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani, Japanese standout pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and veteran righty Tyler Glasnow.

The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their free agency spending spree over the weekend by signing All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernandez.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Hernandez signed a one-year deal that will pay him $23.5 million in 2024.

It includes $8 million in deferred money that will be paid out from 2030 to 2039.

Hernandez spent 2023 with the Seattle Mariners, batting .258 with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs in 160 games. His best season came in 2021 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, when he was selected to the All-MLB Second Team, earned an All-Star nod, and won a Silver Slugger Award.

Reportedly, Hernandez had several offers from other teams this offseason and had an opportunity to land a multi-year deal. However, he picked the Dodgers, who offered the most money on an annual basis and an opportunity to compete for a World Series title.

The Dodgers were amongst the most active teams in the offseason, adding several high-profile names to a roster that won 100 games in 2023. The LA team signed two of the best players on the free agent market, two-time NL MVP Shohei Ohtani and prized Nippon Professional Baseball pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, while also adding left-hand pitcher Tyler Glasnow in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Los Angeles Dodgers once again beat the competition to get the best available player on the free-agent market. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Dodgers have signed Japanese star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a 12-year, $325 million contract.

Yamamoto received the richest deal ever given to a pitcher, surpassing the $324 million contract Gerrit Cole received from the New York Yankees in 2019. Earlier this month, the Dodgers also set the mark for the richest deal in MLB history by signing two-time NL MVP Shohei Ohtani to a 10-year, $700 million contract.

The deal for Yamamoto will come with an added cost for the Dodgers. They are required to pay a posting fee of $50.6 million to the player’s Nippon Professional Baseball team, Orix Buffaloes.

After Ohtani signed with the Dodgers, Yamamoto became the most sought-after free agent in baseball despite never playing in the majors. Almost all the big spenders in the league were interested in his services, including the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and San Francisco Giants. However, the 25-year-old player ended up choosing the Dodgers like Ohtani, and will now be part of a superteam that also includes future Hall of Famers Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts.

Yamamoto is coming off an unprecedented run that saw him win three consecutive Eiji Sawamura Awards, given to the best pitcher in NPB, and post impressive numbers that included a 17-6 record, 1.16 ERA, 169 strikeouts, and just two home runs allowed during the 2023 season.

Veteran ace Clayton Kershaw still doesn’t know where he’ll continue his MLB journey. In a recent chat with AM 570 LA Sports, Kershaw said that he’s undecided on returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the franchise with whom he spent his entire career in the majors.

Kershaw was in a similar position in the past two years, hitting the free agency before re-signing with the Dodgers on a one-year deal. This time around, his situation might be more complicated, considering he is rehabbing from shoulder surgery.

According to Kershaw, he is weighing his options and having discussions with his family in order to make the best decision. On Dodgers’ part, the president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, publicly stated that the franchise would welcome back the 35-year-old and that it’s up to Kershaw to decide whether he wants to continue playing with the team.

Kershaw also revealed that his recovery is going according to plan and that he will be ready to get back on the mound by summer.

“I’m excited to pitch again, and I really do think it’ll be this summer at some point,” Kershaw said. “So I feel good about that.”

During his time with the Dodgers, Kershaw made 10 All-Star appearances, won three NL Cy Young Awards and was NL MVP in 2014. He also helped the franchise win a World Series in 2020.

It is believed around the league that the only other team besides the Dodgers that Kershaw could play for are the Texas Rangers. He was born in Dallas and grew up as a Rangers fan.

Two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani has finally decided on his next MLB team. The two-time unanimous NL MVP has agreed to a 10-year, $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The deal Ohtani signs represents the richest in MLB history. It shatters the previous record of $426.5 million in guaranteed money that Mike Trout received from the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 and the record for the highest annual average of $43.3 million that Max Scherzer got on his three-year deal with the New York Mets in 2022.

Dodgers still haven’t officially announced the news, but Ohtani confirmed the move in an Instagram post shared on Saturday.

“To all the fans and everyone involved in the baseball world, I apologize for taking so long to come to a decision. I have decided to choose the Dodgers as my next team,” Ohtani wrote in a caption while posting a photo of the Dodgers’ logo.

Shohei Ohtani is coming off a season in which he batted .304, which is his career-best in MLB while hitting 44 homers and adding 95 RBIs. He also had a 10-5 record and posted a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts as a pitcher. He was unanimously voted NL MVP, becoming the first player in MLB history to receive the MVP honor in that manner twice.

Ohtani’s 2023 season on the mound ended prematurely as he was forced to be shut down due to a right elbow injury. He underwent a Tommy John surgery, his second on the same elbow, in September and will not be ready to return to pitching until 2025. However, he is expected to be able to serve as the designated hitter from the Opening Day of the 2024 campaign.

While Ohtani was predicted to be the first $500 million player in MLB history, most analysts believe that teams will vary in signing him to such a significant deal due to his elbow surgery. But that obviously didn’t stop the Dodgers from surpassing even the most outrageous predictions and completely resetting the market for free agents.

Ohtani spent his first six seasons in MLB with the Los Angeles Angels. The 29-year-old player reportedly considered a return to the Angels but was won over by the Dodgers’ huge offer and their ability to consistently make the postseason, something he has never experienced so far in his career in the majors.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly “close to agreement” to reunite with veteran reliever Joe Kelly. The two sides have hammered out details on a one-year deal, and Kelly only needs to pass his physical to make it official.

The Dodgers had a $9.5 million club option on Kelly for the 2024 MLB season but decided to pass on it in favor of a $1 million buyout. However, it appears that there is no bad blood between the two sides because of that move because the 35-year-old player will continue calling Los Angeles his home.

By bringing back Kelly, the Dodgers ensure continuity for a bullpen that performed well last season. Besides Kelly, it also included closer Evan Phillips, veteran Brusdar Graterol, and lefty Caleb Ferguson, all of whom will also return for the 2024 campaign.

Joe Kelly initially joined the Dodgers in 2019 on a three-year deal after stints with the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox. He helped the franchise win a World Series in 2020 before leaving for the Chicago White Sox a year later.

The Dodgers re-acquired Kelly at the trade deadline, and it proved to be a great move. He played in 11 games, pitching 10 ½ innings and having a 1.74 ERA with 19 strikeouts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is hoping that he can play baseball once again next summer after he underwent shoulder surgery on Friday. The surgery, with Dodgers head physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, was done to repair the glenohumeral ligaments and his shoulder capsule.

“I am hopeful to return to play at some point next summer,” Kershaw announced on social media. “Thanks for your prayers!” Prior to his surgery, the pitcher was sidelined for six weeks due to his shoulder injury.

A free agent over the past three seasons, Kershaw has signed one-year contracts with the Dodgers for two years in a row in order to remain with the team. While this is his third year doing so, he has proven loyal to the Dodgers; the only team he has pitched for since beginning his career in the majors in 2008.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced earlier this week that their All-Star pitcher Walker Buehler won’t return to the mound during the 2023 MLB campaign as previously planned. Instead, Buehler will wait until 2024 to get back into action.

Buehler underwent a Tommy John surgery back in 2022, and the Dodgers hoped they could have him back in time for this year’s playoff run. However, after consultations with his doctor and the team’s front office, the 29-year-old opted to postpone his return for next season.

“My goal since last year has been to return to a Major League mound this season,” Beuhler said in a statement. “After many conversations with my doctor, the Dodgers’ front office, training staff, and my family, we concluded that waiting until next season is the right course of action.”

Buehler was assigned to Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City earlier this month as part of the plan to get him back in action for the postseason. However, he only made one start, facing six batters, before being shut down again.

This development hands a tough blow to the Dodgers’ rotation ahead of the playoffs. In 2021, his last full season, Buehler led the league with 33 starts and earned his second All-Star nod. He finished the campaign with a 16-4 record, a career-best 2.47 ERA and 212 strikeouts.

The Detroit Tigers’ lefty Eduardo Rodriguez has revealed his reasons for rejecting a trade deadline move to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Rodriguez said that he doesn’t have anything against the Dodgers organization but that he and his family feel happy in Detroit and that he didn’t want to disrupt that.

The Tigers had a deal in place that would see them send Rodriguez to the Dodgers in exchange for prospects. However, the trade didn’t go through because Rodriguez used his no-trade clause.

Rodriguez received a limited no-trade clause as par to the five-year, $77 million contract he signed with the franchise in 2021. The clause gave him the option to provide a list of 10 teams he can’t be dealt to without his approval, and it turned out that the Dodgers were on it. The Tigers hoped they could convince the 30-year-old to change his mind, but their efforts were in vain.

“It’s nothing against the Dodgers or the West Coast or whatever,” Rodriguez said. “It’s just about the details to go out there and where my family is. My future is where they’re happy, and I’m happy, and that’s why I decided to stay here. It has nothing to do with the Dodgers.”

The Tigers now risk losing Rodriguez for nothing in the offseason, as he can opt out of his contract after the 2023 campaign. However, the veteran seems to be quite content to see out his deal.

“I’m with this organization, and I signed here for a long time to stay here,” Rodriguez added. “I feel happy with everything. My family feels happy in Detroit. I feel happy with the team and the organization, so I’d love to stay here.”
