The Los Angeles Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz stated that the team is unlikely to part ways with its number five pick in the upcoming NFL Draft unless a highly lucrative offer is received. Although several teams have reached out to the Chargers, Hortiz revealed that none of them has made a formal offer.

“They have to make it attractive for us to move away from those players,” Hortiz commented. He added that a “fair trade” offer would not be sufficient to convince him to send the lucrative draft pick to another team.

With the teams going before the Chargers in the draft all expected to select quarterbacks, coach Jim Harbaugh commented how the Chargers’ pick is basically the number one pick in the draft should the team pursue players in other positions. The Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots are all without starting quarterbacks, while the Arizona Cardinals may decide to trade their fourth pick.

The NFL world was caught by surprise when the Los Angeles Chargers decided to trade their star wideout Keenan Allen earlier this month to the Chicago Bears. But it turns out that trading Allen wasn’t the Chargers’ first option.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Chargers’ general manager Joe Hortiz said that the team proposed Allen with “multiple options”, including an extension offer.

“Just none of them worked out, and we had an offer for him the day we traded him,” Hortiz said. “We kind of went down every path, and in the end, this was the one that fit us best and fit him best.”

Shortly after Hortiz’s comments went public, Allen’s agent, Joby Branion, went on social media to explain that they only received one option. According to Branion, the Chargers offered his client a two-year extension that included taking a pay cut this upcoming season with “deeper cuts to his current pay” in each of the following seasons.

It makes sense that Allen, who has six Pro Bowl nods to his name, rejected a pay cut, considering he had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2023. He finished last season with a career-high 108 catches for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns.

Now, Allen will play out 2024 on a $23.1 million salary with the Bears before hitting the free agent market next year. That is, of course, if Chicago doesn’t decide to offer him an extension in the meantime.

Jim Harbaugh has become the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced on Wednesday, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal. The former Michigan Wolverines coach was considered to be one of the top candidates for the role.

“Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward,” Chargers owner Dean Spanos stated. “The son of a coach, brother of a coach and father of a coach who himself was coached by names like Schembechler and Ditka, for the past two decades Jim has led hundreds of men to success everywhere he’s been – as their coach.”

During his time at Michigan, Harbaugh went 86-25 and led the team to its first national title this season since 1997. He also won three consecutive Big Ten titles. This season was disappointing for the Chargers, coming last in the AFC West.

The Los Angeles Chargers made a surprising move this week by releasing veteran defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day. The 28-year-old player started all 14 games for the Chargers this season and served as a team captain.

Joseph-Day is likely a cap casualty, although the timing of the move is curious. He was playing on a $6.5 million salary in 2023 and was projected to have a $10 million cap hit next year. The Chargers will now avoid that, considering his contract wasn’t guaranteed past this season.

Despite the Chargers’ struggling performances in 2023, Joseph-Day actually played well. He already matched a career-high 3.0 sacks while adding 31 tackles, including three for loss. His 11 QB hits ranked second on the team.

Joseph-Day, who previously also played with the Los Angeles Rams, is expected to have plenty of interest from playoff contenders. His career stats include 11.0 sacks, 224 tackles, and 31 QB hits.

The Chargers are in the process of cleaning house after firing head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco last week. Interim general manager JoJo Wooden made Joseph-Day’s release his first major piece of business since taking over, but more veterans could be on the move as the franchise looks to have a clean slate after a disappointing season.

The Los Angeles Chargers dismissed coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco, the team announced on Friday. This comes after the team has been unable to turn around its fortunes through a disappointing two and a half seasons. Outside linebackers coach Giff Smith will serve as the team’s interim head coach.

“These decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly — especially when you consider the number of people they impact,” Chargers owner Dean Spanos explained. “We are clearly not where we expect to be, however, and we need new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity was not a risk I was willing to take. Our fans have stood strong through so many ups and downs and close games. They deserve more. Frankly, they’ve earned more.”

Staley was appointed head coach in 2020 following his success as a defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams, transforming them into the league’s best defense in points and yards allowed per game. Ultimately, this defensive success was never translated to the Chargers, with frustrations reaching boiling point following a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen has been ruled out of Thursday night’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a heel injury. Allen’s absence is troublesome for the Chargers, not only because of his fine form this season, but because the Chargers are faced with a series of injury setbacks, with starting quarterback Justin Herbert out for the season with a broken index finger.

Allen has been experiencing his best season to date, setting the Chargers’ all-time record for catches with 108. He is currently leading the league in receptions and ranks fourth overall with a number of yards. “He provides that middle of the field target, or, ‘Hey, if he’s playing outside, I can trust it,'” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said of Allen.

Positive news has come in the form of the return of receiver Joshua Palmer, who was on injured reserve since Week 9 due to a knee sprain. The receiver made five catches for 133 yards in Week 7’s 31-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs before getting injured in the 30-13 Week 8 win over the Chicago Bears.

The Los Angeles Chargers have traded Pro Bowl cornerback J.C. Jackson to the New England Patriots. The Patriots will send a sixth-rounder in 2025 to Los Angeles while getting Jackson and 2025 seventh-round pick.

The move will see Jackson returning to the franchise with which he spent the first four years of his professional career.

Jackson signed with New England as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and went on to establish himself as one of the key players in the Pats’ secondary. In 2021, he had a breakthrough campaign that saw him get 58 tackles, eight interceptions, and a league-leading 23 pass deflections.

Following a career year, Jackson left New England to sign a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Chargers. He was expected to lift up the LA team’s passing defense but never met those expectations.

Jackson’s first year with the Chargers saw him fail to get a single interception for the first time in his career. He was benched in Week 6 and suffered a season-ending injury the next week.

The Chargers hoped that Jackson would bounce back in 2023, but the 27-year-old player continued to struggle while his relationship with the coaching staff deteriorated. This prompted the front office to cut their losses and strike a deal with the Pats.

The Patriots probably hope they can get a better version of Jackson when he returns to a familiar system. He also fills the position of need, considering that rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez will be out for the year with a shoulder injury.

Playing his former franchise, the Las Vegas Raiders, on Sunday, the Los Angeles Chargers outside linebacker Khalil Mack didn’t show any mercy. Mack instead looked like he was playing with some extra motivation, delivering a standout performance that helped the Chargers to a 24-17 win.

Mack finished the night with six sacks, his career-best, and broke the Chargers’ single-game sacks record in the process. Two of his sacks resulted in forced fumbles, with one of them being recovered by the Chargers.

The Raiders started rookie Aidan O’Connell against the Chargers, with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo being out with a concussion. O’Connell’s inexperience ended up making the job easier, according to Mack.

“We had time to get there,” Mack said. “We had a young guy back there. He was thinking a lot, you could tell, and he made some mistakes, especially when it comes to ball security.”

Khalil Mack spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Raiders, who drafted him fifth overall in 2014. After earning three Pro Bowls and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award with the franchise, Mack was traded to the Chicago Bears following a breakdown in extension negotiations.

Mack would go on to play four years for the Bears as well before Chicago traded him to the Chargers ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The 32-year-old player had eight sacks last season and earned his seventh Pro Bowl nod.

The Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is eager to return to the field after suffering an ankle injury in the season opener. And it appears he’ll reach that point sooner than later.

In the latest episode of his Ekeler’s Edge podcast, Ekeler said that his rehab is going well and that he is “doing everything to get back.”

“Us as players, we do the most to make sure that, OK, hey, I’m doing everything to get back,” said Ekeler. “So just know that that is going on behind the scenes. I’m doing everything I can to get back, be healthy, and not have any major setbacks.”

There is a possibility that Ekeler makes the field in Week 4, but the Chargers reportedly don’t want to rush him. If they are not confident enough, they will probably postpone his return to Week 6, considering they are on a bye in Week 5.

Ekeler entered the 2023 season with a huge performance that saw him get 117 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while adding four receptions. The Chargers will hope that the 28-year-old player can maintain this level of production once he returns because his replacements, Joshua Kelley and Isaiah Spiller, didn’t exactly produce eye-catching numbers in the last two games.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers confirmed that their wide receiver Mike Williams suffered an ACL injury that will rule him for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Williams got hurt in the third quarter of a dramatic 28-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. After receiving a pass, the 28-year-old player tried to gain extra yardage before having his foot planted in the ground and being tackled from behind.

Following a tackle, Williams remained on the ground and needed to be carted off the field. Up to that point, the veteran had already racked up seven catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.

“It’s the toughest kind of news. You know, Mike’s one of my favorites,” Chargers’ head coach Brandon Staley told reporters after the news was confirmed. “He’s one of our most important players, and he’s a guy who not only is one of our best players, but he sets the example I think from a team-building culture standpoint in terms of how you want to work. “

Williams has been one of the most reliable weapons for quarterback Justin Herbert when he’s on the field. He had a career year in 2021, making 76 catches for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns. Injuries limited him to 13 games last season, but he still managed to 63 receptions for 895 yards and four TDs.

With Williams out, the Chargers will likely hope that rookie wideout Quentin Johnston takes on a bigger role. The 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft only had five receptions for 26 yards so far in the season.
