The Los Angeles Angels hoped that the 2024 MLB season might be the one in which they finally turn things around. Instead, it started worse than any other before and led to a team meeting organized by the new manager Ron Washington.

The Angels went 0-2 to start the new season, which is bad but not something teams usually hold meetings for. However, Washington believed his clubhouse needed one because of the fashion in which those losses came.

In the season opener against the Baltimore Orioles, the Angels suffered an 11-3 loss. Then, in the second game of the series, they were hammered 13-4. This 24 runs is the franchise gave up in a two-game stretch in its history.

“Just wanted to let them know they’ve played only two games and we can’t get off track,” Washington said via ESPN. “Our focus is on a 162-game championship season. Not two games. The two games haven’t gone like we wanted, but we just got to make certain that we come to the ballpark ready to go.”

The Angels don’t seem to be panicking just yet, but they also don’t want their crisis to go any deeper.

“No one’s hitting the panic button. We’re not happy with it by any means. Just come and trust the process and work tomorrow,” said catcher Logan O’Hoppe.

The Los Angeles Angels haven’t been in the postseason since 2014, marking the longest active playoff drought in the MLB. They also finished at the bottom of AL West four times in the last six seasons.

For some baseball players, playing and competing is the most important thing in their lives. For Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, it’s just a job.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Rendon said that while he likes the game of baseball, it has never been a priority to him.

“It’s never been a top priority for me,” Rendon said via ESPN. “This is a job. I do this to make a living. My faith, my family come first before this job. So if those things come before it, I’m leaving.”

He later clarified that baseball is still one of his priorities, but just further down the list than some would expect.

“Oh, it’s a priority for sure because it’s my job,” Rendon added. “I’m here, aren’t I?”

Rendon has been going through a rough stretch in recent years, failing to stay healthy and struggling to perform when he was on the field. Since signing a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels ahead of the 2020 campaign, he has only managed to play a total of 200 games and has never played more than 58 games in a single season in the past four years.

Rendon dealt with various injuries in 2023, including a fractured shin, being limited to 43 games, his lowest since making his debut in the majors in 2013. He batted .236 in 183 plate appearances, hitting two homers and having 22 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels are not ready to lose two superstar players in one offseason. According to Angels’ general manager Perry Minasian, the team has no intention of trading 3-time AL MVP Mike Trout.

The Angels are bracing for the departure of two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani, who is a free agent and is predicted to sign a deal with big-market teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. Ohtani’s expected departure fueled the rumors that the Angels will head toward rebuilding and move Trout as well.

When asked about the possibility of trading Trout on Tuesday, Minasian said that there is no chance of that happening.

“Mike Trout will not be getting traded,” Minasian told reporters. “100%.”

Trout himself also doesn’t seem like he is thinking about playing elsewhere. Earlier in the offseason, the 32-year-old player said that he plans to wear an Angels’ jersey once the 2024 MLB season starts.

“Going into the offseason, clearing my mind, getting ready for spring, and wearing an Angels uniform in spring,” Trout said at the time.

Mike Trout was limited to 82 games in 2023 while dealing with a hand fracture. He batted .263, his worst since 2011, while finishing the campaign with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs. Trout has seven years left on a 12-year, $426 million contract he signed in 2019.

Despite going through another disappointing season with the Los Angeles Angels, star slugger Mike Trout is not considering leaving the franchise. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Trout dismissed trade rumors surrounding him and said he plans to wear the Angels uniform next spring as well.

According to a recent report by USA Today, the Angels would be open to trading Trout in the offseason if he wants to join a contender. However, the three-time AL MVP doesn’t seem to be thinking about leaving.

“I go through this every year,” Trout said. “These are private conversations I have with [owner] Arte [Moreno] and [president] John [Carpino]. I’m doing the same thing I’ve done the last 13 years. Going into the offseason, clearing my mind, getting ready for spring and wearing an Angels uniform in spring.”

Trout still has seven years left on the 12-year, $426.5 million deal he signed with the Angels in 2019. He received a no-trade as part of the agreement, meaning the team can’t move him without his consent.

The Angels haven’t been to the playoffs since 2014 and don’t seem anywhere close to putting an end to their playoff drought. They currently sit at 70-87 and will finish the regular season below .500 for the eighth consecutive time.

While the Angels still have five games left to play in 2023, Trout has already finished his campaign. The 32-year-old player was placed on the 60-day injured list over the weekend due to a lingering hand injury. He played 82 games this season, batting .263 with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels slim chances of making the playoffs this season have become even slimmer. Their two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani is dealing with an elbow injury and won’t pitch again in 2023.

Ohtani made his last start on Wednesday when he was forced to exit the game against the Cincinnati Reds after throwing just 26 pitches. He underwent an MRI later that day, and the test revealed an ulnar collateral ligament tear in his right elbow.

Ohtani is expected to seek further opinions on his injury before deciding on his next step. There is a possibility he’ll need a Tommy John surgery, which would be his second since coming to MLB. The former AL MVP underwent the same procedure in 2018 and returned to pitching in 2020 while playing as a designated hitter in the meantime.

“As far as plans and details, I don’t have those yet,” said general manager Perry Minasian at a press conference. “I’ve been in contact with his representation. Obviously he hit the second game. He’s played with this, in ’18, but with that being said we’ll take it day by day and see where it goes. Obviously disappointing news. I feel terrible for him. But it is what it is. If anybody can bounce back, it’s him.”

The injury comes at a crucial period in Shohei Ohtani’s career as he will become a free agent at the end of the season. The Angels decided against trading him in hopes of signing him to a long-term extension but will likely face tough competition. Ohtani is not only expected to receive the most lucrative contract in baseball history but also wants to play for a winning organization, something that the Angels haven’t been for a long time.

Los Angeles Angels’ star Mike Trout told reporters on Monday that he still doesn’t know when he’ll return to action. Trout has been out since early July after suffering a hand fracture.

Trout said that he is progressing in his rehab “every day” but that there is still no fixed timeline for his return.

“I know that it’s just a pain tolerance thing,” Trout explained. “Once it gets to a point where it’s bearable, I’ll be out there.”

According to Trout, the injury hasn’t affected his defense, but his batting still comes with a level of discomfort.

“There are certain movements I do in the outfield where, backhand, where I hit it funny, it acts up a little bit. But nothing’s holding me back on defense. It’s just the swinging part,” he added.

Before going down with the injury, Trout was batting .263 and had 18 homers and 44 RBIs in 81 games. The Angels will hope that he can pick up where he left off once he returns as they make a push for their first playoff appearance since 2014.

The Angels have been on a bad run lately, winning just three out of their last 10 games. They currently have a 59-61 record, trailing the AL West leaders Texas Rangers by 12.5 games.

A significant number of MLB teams are preparing for the moment when the Los Angeles Angels start taking trade calls for their two-way star Shohei Ohtani. But if we are to judge by comments recently made by Angels’ general manager Perry Minasian, that moment is not coming.

Ohtani, one of the best players in baseball in recent years, is currently in the final year of his contract. He refused extension offers from the Angels in the past and wants to see what the free agency will look like. This means that LA will face tough competition to re-sign Ohtani and might lose him for just a compensatory pick.

This situation made most of MLB think that the Angels would move Ohtani before the trade deadline in order to get at least something for their star player. However, when asked about it earlier this week, Minasian strongly implied this isn’t an option, especially with the team playing well this season.

“I think anybody that’s watched us play and where we’re at in the standings … I think it’s pretty self-explanatory with where we’re at,” Minasian told the reporters.

The Angels find themselves in an unfamiliar place, having a winning record (41-35) with almost half a season gone and sitting in second place in AL West. The team hasn’t made the playoffs in the past eight-year.

Ohtani’s made a big contribution to the Angels’ good start of the season, batting .295 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs. He is also doing great on the mound, having a 6-2 record as a starter with a 3.29 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 14 games.

Brandon Drury has agreed to a two-year, $17 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, multiple sources reported. This comes after the utilityman enjoyed a breakout season in 2022, winning the Silver Slugger award following his performance.

Drury hit .263/.320/.492 last season, racking up 28 home runs and 87 RBIs in the process. In addition to his impressive batting stats, Drury also proved his versatility, playing in all four infield positions and right field.

The utility man has bounced around between an array of teams in recent years, playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks before moving to the New York Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the New York Mets. Prior to his standout season, Drury scored 51 home runs in 1,589 career at-bats.

Upon signing his new contract with the Angels, Drury will be set to earn almost triple his previous career earnings of $5.7 million. By acquiring Drury, the Angels will hope to continue their push to be more competitive in the American League West.

The Los Angeles Angels and their two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani have agreed to a contract for the 2023 MLB season. The franchise announced over the weekend that the two parties settled on a one-year, $30 million contract and avoided arbitration.

2023 will be Ohtani’s final year of arbitration eligibility, after which he will become a free agent. The $30 million salary he will receive next season is the highest ever for an arbitration-eligible player. The 28-year-old is earning $5.5 million this year.

While the Angels had another disappointing season in 2022, Shohei Ohtani continued to produce at a high level. He currently has a 15-8 record with 2.35 ERA and 213 strikeouts as a pitcher while batting .276 with 34 home runs and 94 RBIs.

Thanks to these spectacular numbers, Ohtani is favored to repeat as AL MVP. If he manages to get the award, he will become only the 14th player in league history to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors.

It is unclear what the future holds for the Los Angeles Angels and Shohei Ohtani. While the Angels would probably hand out a blank check to Ohtani in order to keep him around, the player said on previous occasions that the chance to win would play an important role in his free agency.

Ohtani didn’t do much winning with the Angels since he arrived in town in 2018. During his five years with the franchise, the LA team never made the playoffs and never had a record above .500 at the end of the season.

With Shohei Ohtani performing at an MVP level again, you would think that the Los Angeles Angels aren’t even thinking about trading their two-way star player. And while that might have been the case in the past, it reportedly isn’t anymore.

According to multiple reports, the Angels are entertaining the idea of trading Ohtani for the first time since the Japanese phenom joined the franchise. This is mostly due to the fact that the 28-year-old player will be out of contract after the 2023 season and hasn’t shown urgency to agree to an extension so far.

The trade rumors have reached Ohtani as well, but the player is currently trying to play them down. When asked about his future and the possibility of being traded, Ohtani said that he is the Angels ‘player at the moment and that this is the only thing he’s focused on.

“Regardless of where I’m playing, I’m going to give it my all and try to win that ballgame in front of me,” Ohtani said via a translator. “I’m with the Angels right now, and I’m very thankful for what they’ve done. I love my team and my teammates. Right now, I’m an Angel, and that’s all I can focus on.”

The Angels have been less convinced about their chances of keeping Shohei Ohtani for the foreseeable future with each playoff they have missed during his stint with the franchise. Ohtani had made it clear that he wanted to win when he came to the U.S., and so far, he had completed his part of the bargain. The Angels, on the other hand, have not, and Ohtani still hasn’t experienced MLB postseason baseball in his career.
