Edmonton Oilers center Leon Draisaitl scored twice in the Oilers’ 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday to take his points tally to 100 for the season. In addition, NHL scoring leader Connor McDavid added one goal and an assist in the Oilers’ resounding victory.

“I thought the best player on the ice tonight was Leon Draisaitl … by a country mile,” Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft stated after the game. “I thought he played the game like he was on a mission. I think he was 70% in the faceoff circle, he had a good conscience about him the entire game in terms of both sides of the puck, and I think when he plays in the middle, he really gets his feet moving.”

Now, Draisaitl has 44 goals in total this season, while McDavid pushed his assist tally to 73 as well as his scoring tally to 56. This is the first time since 1973-74 and 1974-75 that teammates were the first players to 100 points in the NHL for two consecutive seasons.

Edmonton Oilers Forward Leon Draisaitl has made history as the first-ever German-born player to win the Hart Trophy, given to the NHL’s most valuable player.

Draisaitl also took home the Ted Lindsay Award, which is given to the most outstanding player in the league, based on the votes of other players, making it hard to argue with the statement that Draisaitl is one of the best players in the NHL right now.

Draisaitl led the league in scoring this year with 110 points in 71 games, scoring 43 goals and adding 67 assists, which were both career highs despite the fact that the regular season was cut short as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

He becomes the only German player to be named league MVP in one of the four North American professional sports leagues next to retired NBA star Dirk Nowitzki, who was named NBA league MVP in 2006-2007.

Draisaitl is the second Oilers player to win the MVP award in the past four years. Connor McDavid, who most of the hockey world considers the best player in the world right now, won the award in 2017.

Edmonton Oilers’ All-Star center Leon Draisaitl will still get the credit for being the NHL’s most productive player in 2019/20 despite the league’s decision to end the regular season and skip to playoffs. NHL announced that Draisaitl will take home the prestigious Art Ross Trophy that is awarded annually to a player with most points in a season.

Draisaitl finished the regular season with 43 goals and 67 assists for a total of 110 points in 71 games. The 24-year-old also led the league in power-play points with 44 and game-winning goals with 10. The 24-year-old center is the 10th European player to win Art Ross Trophy and first German to do so.

Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid took the second spot on the points-leaders list with 34 goals and 63 assists for a total of 97 points.

“You dream of these things, no question, but until you do it, it seems so far away,” said Draisaitl. “I’m proud in a way of course but I know that I still have lots of things to work on… There’s many things in my game I can improve so I am looking to do that every year.”

Since making his NHL debut in 2014, Leon Draisaitl became one of Oilers’ most important players. He was an All-Star in the past two seasons and already has 422 NHL career points to show for.

Draisaitl now hopes to translate his good form in the regular season to playoffs. Edmonton Oilers finished the regular season with 37-25-9 record, which was enough for fourth place in the Western Conference.
