Leeds United majority owner Andrea Radrizzani agreed on Friday to sell his stake in the club to 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. 49er Enterprises has held a stake in the English soccer club since May 2018.

Since first investing in the club, the San Francisco 49ers owners have consistently grown their stake in the club, emerging as a 44% owner while Radrizzani’s Aser Ventures retained the remaining 56%.

Radrizzani’s decision to part ways with Leeds United comes after he and his partner Matteo Manfredi purchased the Italian club Sampdoria, which was relegated from the Serie A this season.

Now, 49ers Enterprises faces the stern task of guiding Leeds United back into the Premier League after the club’s relegation from the English top flight this season. “All of our focus remains on a quick return to the Premier League,” the group said in a public statement following the conclusion of the deal.

If he doesn’t want to play in the Championship, the USMNT star midfielder Brenden Aaronson will have no trouble leaving Leeds United. This is thanks to Aaronson having a relegation release clause in his contract, which was recently reported by the soccer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The release clause kicked in after Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday. This means that any club wanting to sign Aaronson can now simply pay a fixed fee, and Leeds can’t prevent him from leaving if he chooses so.

According to Romano, Aaronson’s teammate and fellow American Weston McKennie will also leave. McKennie returns to Juventus after Leeds didn’t activate their option to turn the loan move into a permanent one.

Brenden Aaronson arrived in Leeds from RB Salzburg in a €32.84 million move this past summer. Aaronson played a strong campaign, appearing in all but two Premier League games and contributing two goals and three assists across all competitions.

It remains to be seen whether Aaronson will stick around in order to help Leeds get back to Premier League or will he opt to move on. The 22-year-old player is expected to have plenty of suitors in the latter case, with a move to another Premier League club or Bundesliga being the most likely option.

Leeds United announced on Monday that the team fired U.S. manager Jesse Marsch. The move comes after the Premier League side’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forrest on Sunday.

The loss dropped Leeds to 17th place on the standings, and they are now sitting just outside the relegation zone with Everton and Southampton breathing down their neck. It also means that the team now hasn’t won a game in Premier League in three months.

Leeds hired Jesse Marsch last February to replace Marcelo Bielsa and try and save the club from relegation. Marsch justified his hiring, leading Leeds to 17th place to end the season and managing to stay in the Premier League.

Entering the 2022-23 season, Leeds hoped to avoid the relegation battle and backed Marsch with several signings, including U.S. midfielders Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams. This resulted in a solid start to the new campaign, including wins over Chelsea and Liverpool, but the team couldn’t find consistency to escape the bottom of the standings.

Marsch, who previously also coached NY Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg, and RB Leipzig, leaves Leeds having compiled an 11-10-16 managerial record.

While Leeds United already had a deal with Marsch in place before sacking Bielsa, this time, they are expected to take some time before selecting a new manager. Several names are being mentioned, including Bielsa’s assistant Carlos Corberan, former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, and Ralph Hasenhuttl, ex-manager of Southampton.

The American colony at Elland Road just got bigger. Premier League club Leeds United brought another U.S. international on board, signing midfielder Tyler Adams from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Leeds confirmed the move on Wednesday but failed to disclose the financial terms. ESPN reports that the transfer came at a base cost of €17 million, but the fee could rise to €23 million with add-ons. Adams inked a five-year deal with his new club.

The 23-year-old Wappingers Falls will reunite with Leeds’ manager and fellow American Jesse Marsch, under whom he previously played at New York Red Bulls and Leipzig.

“Jesse [Marsch] was a huge influence on my career so far,” said Adams. “He’s given me a lot of experiences as a young player that other players may not have received.”

Adams is the USMNT player to arrive at Elland Road this summer. Leeds previously acquired attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson from the Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

Tyler Adams started his professional career with the NY Red Bulls, debuting for the senior team as a 17-year-old player in 2016. After three years in MLS, which included the MLS Supporters Shield trophy, Adams joined Leipzig in a €2.63 million transfer midway through the 2018-19 season.

During his three and a half years in Germany, Adams played 101 games in all competitions and contributed with two goals and four assists. He also became a permanent fixture for the United States men’s national team, making 30 international appearances for the senior team.

Leeds United doesn’t seem to be in the mood to sell Brazilian winger Raphinha. At least not for a price that Arsenal offered in a recent official bid.

Arsenal made Raphinha one of their priorities during the summer window and wanted to move quickly in order to avoid competition from major European clubs. However, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, their first offer was well below Leeds’ evaluation and was swiftly rejected.

Soccer insider Fabrizio Romano followed up Ornstein’s report by revealing that the offer was somewhere in the €40/45 million range. Romano also added that Arsenal’s crosstown rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are interested in the player.

Raphinha has arguably been Leeds’ best player since joining the club in 2020 from Ligue 1 side Rennes. The 25-year-old Brazilian played 66 games in all competitions in United’s jersey and scored 17 goals to go with 11 assists.

Leeds would prefer to keep Raphinha on board as they look to bounce back following a disappointing campaign in 2021-22 in which they narrowly escaped relegation. However, reports say that the club also understands Raphinha’s ambition to play in European competitions and won’t stand in the way if their price is met.

Raphinha’s preferred destination is believed to be Barcelona, but the chances of him landing there are slim. The Catalan club is in the midst of a financial crisis and has other priorities.

Former U.S. international Jesse Marsch has been unveiled as the new manager of Premier League’s Leeds United. Marsch will take over from Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa, who was sacked last week after a string of poor results.

Marsch, who had his last job with Bundesliga’s RB Leipzig, will be tasked with securing Premier League survival for Leeds. The club is currently 16th on the standings, being two points clear of the relegation with 12 games left to play.

“We have all the tools here,” Marsch after taking the job. “I’m here to help this group understand how we can get better and handling the moment right now, we have to stay calm and control what we can control. We are still in a good situation where we control all of our destiny.”

Despite all the circumstances, Leeds United’s decision to move on from Bielsa was surprising. He was the man who helped the club to reach the Premier League in 2020 and kept them there last season. However, after five losses in six games, Leeds’ brass believed they need a fresh approach if they want to remain in the top flight.

Jesse Marsch spent his entire playing career in Major League Soccer and represented USMNT on two occasions. He had his first coaching job with USMNT, serving as an assistant on Bob Bradley’s staff, before embarking on successful spells with MLS clubs Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls.

Marsch went overseas in 2019 to become a manager for the Red Bull Salzburg. He enjoyed an impressive stint in Austria, winning two consecutive domestic league titles and two cup trophies. This secured him a head coaching job at RB Leipzig, where he succeeded Bayern Munich-bound Julian Nagelsmann.

Unlike his other stops, Marsch struggled to find success with Leipzig. He spent only 21 games in charge, recording nine losses, before being relieved of his duties.

Why? Paraag Marathe, accustomed to the question, knows the answer. The San Francisco 49ers president of enterprises finds himself in the media spotlight after the NFL franchise invested $13.5m (£10m) in English soccer club Leeds United.

“The potential is huge,” Maranthe observed. “It’s an opportunity for a great resurrection. This was once one of the best teams in Europe. Even a casual fan will have heard of them — half of our players have heard of them. They have global brand recognition.”

Leeds United’s heyday was in the 1960s and 1970s when the late Don Revie took charge of a team which regularly challenged for the title, as well as domestic and European trophies.

Although champions at the birth of the Premier League in 1992, it wasn’t until the end of that decade Leeds began a journey which saw they soar to football’s elite. Their subsequent crash and burn into the underworld of the Football League remains one of the sport’s sorriest tales.

Close to bankruptcy, a madness engulfed the club’s citadel Elland Road and all who took control. The hope is that the 49ers add sanity to a combustible club.

It’s not an investment undertaken lightly. “The goal is building something which will last. Going big on rebuilding the culture of the football side of the organization — that’s what the appointment of Bielsa is. It’s all about rebooting that football culture.”

Certainly, a return to the Premier League is part of the reboot. However, the Champions League, and looking ahead a European Super League, is the real ambition. Can the 49ers and Leeds United live the dream?
