LA Galaxy moved fast with their search for a new manager after recently firing Guillermo Barros Schelotto. According to multiple reports, the club approached club legend Robbie Keane and is viewing him as their first choice for the position.

ESPN reports that Galaxy prepared a list of names they would like to hire and are set on talking with all the potential candidates before making the final choice. Still, Keane is viewed as an ideal fit given his ties with the club and the experience he got serving as an assistant under Mick McCarthy and Jonathan Woodgate.

Galaxy isn’t expected to make the official hiring until the end of the 2020 MLS regular season, considering they have lost all playoff chances. Assistant Dominic Kinnear will see out the remainder of the campaign in an interim role.

Robbie Keane played for Galaxy between 2011 and 2016 and is often regarded as one of the best to play for the club and in MLS in general. During his time in the United States, Keane scored an impressive 104 goals in 165 games in all competitions while helping the club win three MLS Cups. He also won numerous individual accolades, including the MLS MVP award in 2014 and four MLS Best XI nods.

After leaving Galaxy, Keane briefly served as a player/coach in Indian Super League with ATK before taking roles on coaching staff with Ireland national team and English Championship side Middlesbrough.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto is no longer LA Galaxy’s manager. The MLS side fired the Argentian on Thursday, confirming the news on social media.

Galaxy also parted ways with Barros Schelotto’s staff, including assistants Gustavo Barros Schelotto and Ariel Pereyra as well as goalkeeping coach Juan José Romero and performance coach Javier Valdecanto.

With the 2020 MLS season being close to an end, Galaxy will wait until the offseason to start a search for a new manager. Until then, assistant Dominic Kinnear will guide the club on an interim basis.

Speaking about the move, LA Galaxy general manager Dennis te Kloese said that Barros Schelotto’s dismissal resulted from the club’s poor performances. Galaxy is currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference, with only five wins in 19 games.

“Based on results, we have decided to go in a different direction,” said te Kloese. “The LA Galaxy is a club that is built on winning on the field and being representative of the championship mentality and pedigree that you expect in Los Angeles.”

Guillermo Barros Schelotto took over the club in January 2019, coming to MLS after stints with Palermo and Boca Juniors.

In his first season with Galaxy, Barros Schelotto reached semi-finals in the West. This year, however, the team struggled despite making some big moves, and the organization eventually decided it was time for a change of course with the ever-increasing competition around the league.

LA Galaxy have finally found their new head coach. The team announced on Wednesday that former Boca Juniors boss Guillermo Barros Schelotto will take over the team for 2019 MLS season.

The news was confirmed on Galaxy’s official social media.

“After a comprehensive search, domestically and internationally, we believe Guillermo will be a landmark signing for this club,” – said Galaxy general manager Dennis te Kloese. “Guillermo is a proven winner who has experience coaching, playing and winning for big clubs. It is our hope that Guillermo’s managing style and familiarity with MLS will bring trophies and championships to LA Galaxy fans and the city of Los Angeles.”

After Sigi Schmid resigned in September, LA Galaxy considered several high profile names as candidates for their head coaching vacancy in the past few months Former Portland Timbers’ manager Caleb Porter seemed like the man for the job until recently but ended up passing on the opportunity. This is when the team turned to Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who was one of the candidates in the early stages of their search.

“I am honored to be the head coach for the most decorated club in Major League Soccer,” – said Schelotto in a statement. “This is a tremendous opportunity for me and I am excited to get to work. The LA Galaxy have long been the standard in MLS and I am ready to push the club to new heights.”

Schelotto spent the last two years with Boca Juniors, where he had lots of success and managed to win two Argentina’s Primera División titles. He also reached the finals of the Copa Libertadores, where Boca suffered a defeat from their bitter rivals River Plate.

It looks like Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s magic will live on in Los Angeles. Although he was linked with a return to Europe in the last couple of weeks, Ibra will now resign from the LA Galaxy as a Designated Player according to The Athletic. This won’t be the only deal Galaxy will pull off this week, since the team is expected to appoint Caleb Porter as their new head coach.

Although he signed a two-year deal with Galaxy in March 2018, Zlatan Ibrahimovic largely outplayed his $1.5 million a year contract, scoring 22 goals and providing 10 assists in 27 games. After the end of the 2018 season, Ibrahimovic asked for a raise and even considered joining Seria A powerhouse Milan if his demands are not met.

Los Angeles ended up giving Ibra Designated Player money, but are now facing with another tough decision. Since MLS teams can have only three DP players, Galaxy will have to move on from either Gio dos Santos, Jonathan dos Santos, or Romain Alessandrini before the season starts.

After considering several high-profile names, LA Galaxy decided to turn to Caleb Porter as their next coach. Porter previously served as the coach of Portland Timbers from 2013 to 2017, winning one MLS Cup in the process. He and Timbers mutually parted ways following the end of the 2017 season.

Porter previously had offers from several MLS teams, including Orlando City SC, but decided to turn them down, waiting for the right opportunity.

It’s time for a change at LA Galaxy as head coach Sigi Schmid announced on Monday that he is stepping down from his position. With this move, Schmid puts an end to what has been a disappointing second stint with the team that only lasted 13 months. The 65-year-old already coached Galaxy on one previous occasion, from 1999 to 2004.

I have coached at various levels of soccer in the United States for over 35 years, where I have dedicated myself to furthering the sport in our country,” – said Schmid of his decision. “After careful consideration, I have decided to step away from coaching at this time, but would like to remain in the game.

Sigi Schmid leaves LA Galaxy in a tight position. Galaxy is currently on the eighth spot in the Western Conference, two places short from the playoff position. In the remaining six matches of the season, Galaxy will be coached by Schmid’s assistant coach Dominic Kinnear on an interim basis.

We want to thank Sigi for everything he’s done for the LA Galaxy and for soccer in Southern California,” – said Galaxy president Chris Klein. “He has played such an integral part of the success of the LA Galaxy since 1996, including helping bring this club the first of five MLS Cup trophies. We respect Sigi’s decision and we will continue to focus on our push for playoffs as we move forward. Dom is one of the finest coaches in the history of this league, and we trust him to lead this group for the remainder of the season. His keen understanding of our team and MLS will serve us well for the last six games of the season. The club will conduct its search for the next LA Galaxy head coach immediately.

After starting his coaching career with the UCLA and United States U20 team, Sigi Schmid joined LA Galaxy in 1999, winning four trophies during his five years with the team. He went on to coach Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders FC before returning to LA in July 2017.

Schmid’s first year back was marked with the embarrassing season in which the Galaxy finished last in the overall standings. In the offseason, the team acquired several players including superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Galaxy continued to play mediocre soccer, and Schmid’s exit might be for the best at the end of the day.
